†1602 ✉ 1845 (Nov. 6) entire to Van Diemens Land, headed “Lake Leake”, rated “3d.” in red and “5d” in black, backstampedblack oval “PORTLAND/(crown)/NEW S. WALES” with date slug “DE 8” inverted. The letter originated in SouthAustralia and, due to the remoteness from Adelaide, the letter crossed the border into Victoria where it was posted at Portland for carriage by ship to Van Diemen’s Land. Estonia

featuring the award winning collection formed by the late Karl Valdo Laas (1940–2001)

Karl Laas was born in Parnu, Estonia. His family escaped to Sweden in 1944 and susequently moved to Canada in 1949.Karl started visiting Estonia in the early 1980s while it was still occupied and developed an avid interest in his home country. Having begun an interest in philately in his high school days, he switched to collecting Estonian philatelic subjectsalmost exclusively. His major interest became the Estonian Fieldpost of World War I and the War of Independence, theFieldpost of World War II being a more recent collection.

His World War I collection was exhibited extensively and won Gold and Grand awards in Baltpex 1991, 1992 and 1999,small silver in Capex 1996, Large Silver in the World Philatelic Exhibition in Istanbul, 1996, and Silver in Stampex 1993and Gold in Stampex 1995.

He was a contributor to the Hurt – Ojaste book on Estonian Philately, a founding member of the Estonian Postal Museum.and was in the process of updating the bibliography on Estonian Philatelic Literature. Sadly he died suddenly of a heartattack in 2001 on his way to an exhibition of Baltic material in Montreal, Canada
