Ήδη από το 1960 η μαρξιστική θεωρία βρισκόταν κάτω από επανεξέταση. Η «κρίση του μαρξισμού» μετά τη δεκαετία του 1990 και την πτώση της ΕΣΣΔ και τις κοινωνικές αλλαγές στην ανατολική Ευρώπη και το κίνημα του μεταμοντερνισμού σε όλον τον κόσμο, επέφερε ριζικές αλλαγές στη μοντέρνα σκέψη και πιο συγκεκριμένα στην μαρξιστική σκέψη. «Φυσικά, οι νέες κατευθύνσεις που πήραν οι μαρξιστικές θεωρίες είναι πολλές και διάφορες.» Μία μεγάλη κατεύθυνση προέρχεται από την αλτουσεριανή προσέγγιση που βασίζεται στην έννοια του επικαθορισμού.
