Our students face challenges in deciding on a career and how to get there. What college should they attend? What can they do now and in the near future to help them achieve their goals? In October, the Future Centers began the second season of Career Lunch & Learns. We bring in local professionals to talk candidly about their college experience and career choice. These informal meetings are designed to help students learn more about certain careers, especially those that are hard to job shadow. The Johnson-Donofrio family (above) will soon reap the benefits of investing in their children's education thanks to the La Crosse Promise. The family's new home on 9th Street across from Lincoln Middle School is nearly ready. They hope to be in the home in a few weeks. Promise President Margaret Dihlmann-Malzer said that it was amazing to have another home finished just a little over a year of launching the program. "We are accomplishing some of the things we wanted to do in terms of helping children go to college, in terms of helping families get into new housing, and in terms of helping revitalize this neighborhood." -- Margaret Dihlmann-Malzer The city lot was purchased by the Johnson family this year and building began in the summer. They did quite a bit of the interior work on their own, including installing the wood floor and the tiling. Sons Jacob (15) and Lucas (13) will each receive $25,000 in scholarships when they graduate from Logan High School. The home was built next to a new home that was completed by the City of La Crosse just last year. This is a great example of how we are all working together to transform our community!

Campus Visit to University of Wisconsin-Platteville

La Crosse Promise Future Centers recentlyhosted the first campus visit of theschoolyear. Central and Logan High Schoolstudents ventured to UW-Platteville insouthern Wisconsin on Monday, October 17.

Although the early morning bus ride startedwith soft snores, the group quickly perked upas they entered the UW-Platteville StudentCenter greeted with none other than BrunoMars's "Uptown Funk" to get the day started.

Jeanette Vonhaden, a UW-Plattevilleadmissions counselor, navigated thestudents through the different programs andgeneral information about the school.

The students asked many importantquestions, such as "What different academicresources are available to me at Platteville?"and "What is dorm life like?"

After an extended Q and A session, the touraround the campus began. The falling leavesadded a nostalgic atmosphere to the hustleand bustle of the campus while the studentswere led around the gymnasium, severalacademic buildings, the library, and finally tothe dining center for lunch among the collegestudents.

One Central student was exceptionallyexcited about the opportunity to work in aliving biology lab consistent of insects,reptiles, and amphibians. A Logan studentnoted interest in the prestigious engineeringprograms available at UW-Platteville.

Interim Directors NamedLa Crosse Promise has named Margaret Dihlmann-Malzer andRalph Heath as Interim Executive Directors of the organization.

La Crosse Promise began its search for a new ExecutiveDirector after the recent death of Jerilyn Dinsmoor who passedaway on September 4.

La Crosse Promise hopes to have a new director in place byJanuary 1, 2017. HR Advantage is leading the executivedirector search.
