Renzo Piraccini*

Post-harvest technologies regar-ding individual machineries, sto-rage and processing plants andpackaging solutions have marked

the evolution of fruit and vegetable industry all overthe world. Their development has given rise to a realrevolution, allowing the transition from products de-stined for a restricted market, close to production sites,to products able to face a wider market, in some cases, when the shelf life allows it, without borders, a trulyglobal market.Post-harvest technologies are today a decisive compe-titive factor for production, commercial and distribu-tion companies. They deserve the utmost attention, yetthey lack adequate information and communicationtools outside the promotional initiatives of individualcompanies. This publication was created to fill this gap. Of course,it is an effort that does not end here, but is actually inits initial phase. This guide will be continually updatedwith a special site in progress, a linked newsletter, anda paper version that will be published at least everytwo years. It is not an easy task because that of thepost-harvest technologies for fresh produce industry isa complex, technical world, not easy to divulge evenat a specialized public. But it is the intention of us pro-moters to give an adequate answer to the increasinglycurious and attentive question of companies producingand marketing fruit and vegetables on the innovationsmade available by technology suppliers.'Fruit & Veg Top Technologies and Packaging' is a pro-ject that arises from the collaboration between CesenaFiera, the Macfrut-owned company, hence the fair thatis a worldwide reference for this sector, and GemmaEditco, the publishing house of Corriere Ortofrutticolo,

the historical monthly magazine of the sector that hasbeen published in Italy regularly since 1965. It is nocoincidence that the initiative starts from Italy but isdestined to a global market and, more particularly, tothose Countries and those companies that have recen-tly appeared or they are now entering a competitivefruit and vegetable production, oriented towards a vastmarket. Italy is the Country of reference at internatio-nal level in post-harvest technologies and rightthrough Macfrut and its countless international mis-sions that the opportunities and innovations offeredby this sector to the fruit and vegetable world aremade known in the emerging Countries of Africa, Asiaand Latin America as well as in more mature markets.Precisely because this is the target, the Guide will ac-company the foreign missions of Macfrut during theyear, and the parallel initiatives of Cesena Fiera at theinternational level and will be updated at the traditionalfair that takes place on May in Rimini. It will also be thetask of Gemma Editco to disseminate this publicationas much as possible at international level, committingitself to divulge it in all the international fairs dedicatedin the world to the fruit and vegetable supply chain, and to update it promptly with the collaboration of allthe companies participating in the project. In this first edition we present an essential list of theleading companies subdivided by specialization. Wethen devote particular attention to selected companies, the number of which is quite small, but which is desti-ned to grow rapidly in electronic updates and in thesecond paper edition. We intend to provide clear, pre-cise, useful information, as far as possible rigorous andwithout excessive promotional tones. Those who readmust be able to open their eyes to the complex worldof technologies and packaging for fruit and vegetablesand to understand who offers what.

les are over 70 millions of Euros per year. The groupstrives for partnership with our customers by providing“state of the art” grading & packing lines, supplemen-ted by unparalleled service support to ensure maximumsystem uptime against minimum costs.Aweta offers therefore a wide range of graders andpacking machines for all fruit and vegetable varietiesranging from apples, pears, stone fruit, kiwi, citrus, tomatoes, peppers to avocado, mango, etc....A special market for Aweta is the sorting and packingof roses where it is the biggest in the world.Aweta graders equipped with sensors are able to gra-de on external and internal defects, weight, firmness, shape and taste. For specific types of fruit and vegetables, like avoca-do and mango, Aweta has the leading position in themarket for supplying solutions for ready-to-eat selec-tion systems (fruit ripeness). These are the elements that highlight Aweta group inthe eyes of customers all around the world. They alsopoint out Aweta constant efforts to invest in develo-ping new technologies. On Macfrut 2018, Aweta gave a demonstration of the“state of the art” products, presenting the grader“Rollerstar”, equipped with the all the new qualitysensor technologies: i.e. external defect sorting VI-SION HS, internal defect sorting INSCAN and the AFSsystem to measure fruit ripeness.VISION-HS is the latest developed camera system spe-cially designed for avocado, pear and mango. Withthis new sensor version excellent results have beenachieved. HS – it stays for Hyperspectral – comes

from the spectral technology (multiple HD cameras)that detects “on” and “through” product skin im-perfections which are not visible to human eye. Thesystem analyzes the different electromagnetic wave-lengths to secure that the effects are visible and clas-sifiables. INSCAN and AFS sensors are already working withgreat success since several years all over the world. These systems measure, “non-destructively” the in-ternal physiological characteristics of fruit and vege-tables such as defects, fruit ripeness, sugar, etc.Besides the grading technologies, also other Awetaproducts are becoming more and more important inthe fruit and vegetable industry like palletisation, boxhandling & buffering, robots and traceability. Withmanual labour becoming expensive and more difficultto get, customers are looking for more automation oftheir grading and packing plants. In this field Awetaoffers a wide range of customized and flexible solu-tions, aligned with the grading devices.Often overlooked but one of the most importantaspect of any grading & packing line is the integrationof product-data, machine-control and market-data.Only with 100% integration the different parts beco-me really “one” system and are able to sort and packexactly the right products in the most efficient way.In August 2019 Aweta G&P is moving into a brandnew building of 7500 m2 in Pijnacker-Nootdorp, NL(in the picture below). It will be a fundamental spet toenhance and rationalize production and delivery: in-vesting in the future is the only way to succeed anddevelop new business.

vanced international companies today, as evidencedby the very high percentage of export and the successand recognitions obtained in the United States, theworld's number one market for fresh cut fruit. As a matter of fact, the adventure of this companyfrom Modena begins in the United States. In the ear-liest sixties, Carlo Ascari the founder, was a techni-cian from Atlas Pacific (Pueblo, Colorado) which sha-red withFMC corporation the entirety of the market inthe supply of fruit processing technologies. No talk offreshcutproduce yet: most ordinary processes invol-ved frozing, dehydration and canning for syrup fruit.Ascari worked for the Milan office of Atlas Pacific asengineer in the aftersale service. He become soon anappreciated expert of technologies with a great crea-tivity and resourcefulness. ABL was started in 1978but began to deal with technologies for fruit proces-sing in 1982 and 1983 with the first peach pittersand churn out' patents at a rate of 3-4 every year. From peach pitters to apple peelers and then pearprocessing, ABL goes on to develop new technologiesfor processing pineapples, melons, mangoes, kiwis, oranges, watermelons, coconuts, not without upda-ting the more traditional fruit machinery with additio-nal features and upgrades.

ABL's very high specialization has seen giants such asMcDonald's, Del Monte, Taylor Farms, and manyothers, who successfully use its technologies. In themeantime, Carlo Ascari has been joined by his off-spring Luca, sales manager, who in the US sits on theboard of directors of the United Fruit Produce Asso-ciation, and Daniela, who is in charge of general or-ganization coordinating the back office. "In the United States - explain Daniela and Luca - fre-sh cut fruit has been living for years a magical season, with consumption growth of 25 percent and moreyear on year. The processing is also done directly byretailers with reduction of costs and packaging. Theconsumer thus enjoys a product that is easy to eat, ofhigh quality and at a fair price. In Europe the poten-tial for development is remarkable, with peaks ad-vanced in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Germanyand elsewhere, but the road ahead is still long". Therefore the ABL target is represented by companiesof the canning industry, the industrial confectionery, the dehydration and the fresh cut. The developmentof this company is even more surprising consideringthat the Cavezzo headquarters was destroyed by theearthquake that struck Emilia on May 29th 2012 andhad its epicenter a few kilometers from there. An Ita-lian miracle, we can say.

Namely, they are scientific supports that allow thegrower to know the characteristics of the fruit such asfruit ripeness (DA Meter, Kiwi Meter, Cherry Meter),firmness or hardness of the pulp (penetrometers anddurometers), sugar concentration (refractometers), si-ze (calibers) and fruit temperature. In addition, T.R. Turoni’s activities range from meteo-rogical instruments to the measurement of soil andwater using pH meters (acidity), conductivity meters(salinity) and soil moisture meters, and even tools forcontrolling storage and logistics systems.

DA-METERNon-destructive instrument to verify the degree ofmaturity of apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, apri-cots, etc.Have the possibility to check the trend of the ripeningof fruit and vegetables is very important because it al-lows to determine the most appropriate period inwhich to begin harvesting and, during refrigeration, itis a valuable help to get the fruit and vegetables onthe market with the right degree of maturation. The DA-Meter is a portable non-destructive instru-ment that, using the properties of absorbance, mea-sures the level of chlorophyll present in the pulp of afruit that is a precise index of its state of maturation.

The DA-Meter can find a useful use throughout thefruit and vegetable supply chain, from the field to thepoint of sale.

DUROMETERThe durometer is a valuable aid not only for the har-vesting phase, but also during cold storage because itallows to control the hardness of the fruit and vege-table pulp, especially for cherries, tomatoes, blueber-ries and avocados. The hardness of the pulp of a fruit and vegetable pro-duct is a very important index in quality control th-roughout the fruit and vegetable chain; the date ofcollection of a fruit depends on the period of time thatthe product will spend trefrigerated and raveling toreach the final consumer. The main feature of the instrument is the NON-DI-STRUTTIBILITY of the fruit object of the measure.

INFIA has in fact completed the authorization pro-cess by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) of itsown "Supercleaning Process": in this way it can ope-rate with its own internal recycling process. The 100% R-PET is the latest innovation of the "INFIA 4 Earth" project undertaken by the company in

recent years to adapt all company processes to the phi-losophy of sustainability both in terms of energy savingand the reduction of waste. All this with attention toboth functional and aesthetic innovation of products incompliance with traceability and food safety.

LATERAL VENTILATIONInfia has created the so-called "F concept": a paten-ted system in baskets that allows greater preservabi-lity of the product, reduce waste and allows to pre-cool the product more quickly (energy saving of 25%)and therefore slow down the fruit ripening process, guaranteeing a longer shelf life.

DIRECT PRINTINGInfia boasts the world record as a packaging manu-facturer offering a high quality full color printing so-lution directly on the surface of the basket. This newgeneration technology allows not adding further pla-stic materials to the trays with advantages in terms ofcosts and environmental impact, maintaining the te-chnical characteristics of disimpilability and wholeso-meness of the tray itself.

ONE SHOTFor several years INFIA has made possible a comple-te separate collection of bins with a handle, allowingthe "One Shot" packaging to be completely disposedof in the plastic container. The reinforcement implemented allows the insertionof protective mats, bubble wrap or absorbent pads onalmost the entire range; it is also possible to apply la-bels on all types of baskets, lids or clamshell.
