AUGUST SERMON SCRIPTURE

July was chock full of activities and celebrations! I am grateful that you and I

survived to tell the story! Here is a summary of our recent activities.

•The outpouring of generous financial support to help with Venezuela NOW; we

sent a check for $4,520 to Venezuela.

•We collected $1,356 toward our outreach projects: Murphy Harpst $100,

Wesley Woods $195, and VBS $486.

•Our church supported Valerie Moore, a Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) intern

with $1,000. She reached her goal of $20,000 and will be on her way to China in the first week of August.

•Axel Baleon who is the first one to go to college in his family and was short $4,000 for his tuition for Young

Harris College. Our church collected $2,000 and Rev. Millie found a matching grant for $2,000. He will go to

college tuition free in August!

•We served 38 children at our Vacation Bible School here at Second Avenue, and Rev. Millie & Kevin helped out

with the VBS at Metropolitan United Methodist Church on Broad Street.

•We successfully finished Smart Kids, Smart Lunch program and this year added another site at the

Darlington Mobile Home Park. We served an average of over 20 families a day at both locations. On July 24, we

had a back to school bash with school supplies, a feast, and even free haircuts!

•Rev. Millie finished her term as the Dean of The Georgia Pastor School after serving for 8 years! Hallelujah!

We are in the Rome-Carrollton District of the North Georgia Annual Conference, and our church is considered as

a “healthy, thriving, small church.” Now that is a good title to hold! I hope that we can redefine the “small

church” in a positive light over and over again. Numbers matter and membership matters, but I hope we can also

focus on quality and maturity of faith as well. I am constantly praying for our church and community on how we

can make an impact in our community. Mother Theresa’s words come to my mind, “Not all of us can do great

things. But we all can do small things with great love.” If you have any ideas of making a small impact in our

church and community, please do not hesitate to share. We can do this when we are together and striving toward

perfection in love.

I am proud to be your pastor!

Millie

Thank you so much to the congregation of Second Avenue Methodist

Church for choosing to be a part of what the Lord is doing in East Asia.

I am so thankful to have met you and spent time in your church, and I

am confident He will use your gifts towards furthering His kingdom in

a place that has little access to the Gospel. I can’t wait to keep you all

updated, and again thank you so much for your generosity!

In Him,

Valerie Moore

Valerie joined our worship service on Sunday, July 7 and shared about her upcoming mission

work with Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ). Through the generosity of our

congregation, she has met her financial commitment goal and will head to China in the coming

week. Please continue to lift Valerie in your prayers during her 10-month stay overseas.

SECOND HELPINGS

Grow...

Lay Servant Ministries: Fall classes in the Rome-Carollton District will be 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on October 12, 19, and 26. Location and courses offered to be determined. Email or call District Director Tim Galloway (706-346-8144 & [email protected]) with your interest along with any courses you are needing or considering.

Upcoming Bible Study: A New Bible Study "Rehearsing Scripture"- Starting Wednesday, August 28, 10:30 a.m. Fellowship Hall. SCRIPTURE. We can study it carefully. We can listen to sermons on it and read what the experts say about it. But in the end, Scripture needs to be rehearsed and encountered—and we can do that best in community with others. In this Bible Study we will use concrete, practical tools for reading and rehearsing Scripture. Suitable for new and seasoned Bible readers alike, this Bible Study invites solitary readers to become community readers—to gather around a shared text and encounter God anew together. You may buy the book Rehearsing Scripture by Anna Carter Florence, but it is not necessary. Bring your Bible.

Bible Study Coming in September: Wednesday evenings ~ 5:45-7:15 p.m. Beginning on Wednesday, September 4, join Rev. Millie for a study entitled “Becoming a Praying Congregation” by Rueben P. Job. We will eat together as we learn how to make prayer a way of living. See Rev. Millie for more details.

Those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall

Help support this important ministry in our community with your donation to this annual offering.

Invite...

Missionary Support: Nancy Carew is a United Methodist missionary in Liberia who we support financially. Please send Nancy a card for her birthday on August 6, and thank her for the work she does on our behalf sharing the good news of Jesus’ love. Nancy Carew United Methodist Center Liberia Annual Conference 13th Street Sinkor, P.O. Box 10-1010 Monrovia, Liberia

Meet Our New District Superintendent Rev. Dr. Jessica Terrell, was appointed to serve as superintendent of the Rome-Carrollton District after Rev. Dr. David Naglee retired in June. "Jessica is down-to-earth and relational. She has a keen strategic mind and has led churches well, sometimes under very difficult circumstances," said Bishop Sue. "Jessica understands and appreciates small rural churches, which will serve her well in the Rome-Carrollton District. We look forward to welcoming her to our team!" A native of LaGrange, Terrell grew up on her family's farm. She holds degrees from LaGrange College, Duke Divinity School, and received her doctorate from Emory University. Before becoming D.S., Dr. Terrell held appointments at Eatonton First in the Augusta District, Bethesda UMC in Lawrenceville, Glenn Memorial UMC in Atlanta, and Covington First UMC. "One of the beautiful things about our appointive system is that when we, as pastors, live into our vows to go where sent, we find ourselves in some of the most unexpected, yet amazing places," said Dr. Terrell. "I have loved and learned much in every church I served so far. I am especially grateful for the overwhelming support and encouragement of Eatonton First. They are an incredible faith community. And I am humbled and excited to work with and learn alongside the cabinet, Bishop Sue, and the pastors and churches of the Rome-Carrollton District." One of the amazing places ministry has taken Terrell was a pulpit exchange in 2011 with the East Belfast Methodist Mission in Northern Ireland. During this exchange, she focused on ministries of reconciliation, conflict transformation, and the local church as a leading agent in community transformation. Beyond her ministry in the local church, Terrell has served the North Georgia Conference on the Imagine No Malaria Campaign Steering Team, as chair of the Atlanta-Emory District Committee of Ordained Ministry, and as a member of the Conference Board of Ordained Ministry and the Augusta District Committee on Ordained Ministry. She is also a member of the North Georgia Conference Board of Trustees and the 2019 Annual Conference Planning Committee.
