Reasons for the Rising Demand for Land

Increase in Global Population

• In the 1960s, global population was at 3 billion.

•By 2008 the number stood at 6.6 billion.

•Currently global population is at 7 billion.

•The size of the Earth has not grown.

Increased Urbanisation

• Increase in the percentage of urban centres.

• Increase in the percentage of people living in urban centres.

• Megalopolises (supercities) are formed• New York – Boston – Tokyo – Manila

• Urban Centres need more land to build residential, industrial and commercial purposes.

More of one, Less of the other

•Useable land is fixed•More used for one function means less for another.

•The same piece of land can only either be used for residential / agricultural / commercial / industrial, rarely for combinations.
