Unit 11: Understanding Land Supply

Page 2: Sec 2 Unit 11 understanding land supply

Thinking Questions

1.Does Singapore really have very little land?

Page 3: Sec 2 Unit 11 understanding land supply

Unit Objectives

1.Explain the reasons for land constraint.

Page 4: Sec 2 Unit 11 understanding land supply

Land : A Scarce Resource

•Scarce : Rare and hard to find.•Land refers to the surface of the Earth (except Oceans)

•Makes up 30% of surface of the Earth.

•10% is habitable

Page 5: Sec 2 Unit 11 understanding land supply

Land Land Land

•Current Global Population = 7 billion humans.

•Limited supply of land mixed with unlimited demand for land.

Page 6: Sec 2 Unit 11 understanding land supply

3 Common uses for land

1.Residential

2.Industrial

3.Agricultural

Page 7: Sec 2 Unit 11 understanding land supply

Reasons for the Rising Demand for Land

•Increase in Global Population•Increase in Urbanisation

Page 8: Sec 2 Unit 11 understanding land supply

Increase in Global Population

• In the 1960s, global population was at 3 billion.

•By 2008 the number stood at 6.6 billion.

•Currently global population is at 7 billion.

•The size of the Earth has not grown.

Page 9: Sec 2 Unit 11 understanding land supply

Increased Urbanisation

• Increase in the percentage of urban centres.

• Increase in the percentage of people living in urban centres.

• Megalopolises (supercities) are formed• New York – Boston – Tokyo – Manila

• Urban Centres need more land to build residential, industrial and commercial purposes.

Page 10: Sec 2 Unit 11 understanding land supply

More of one, Less of the other

•Useable land is fixed•More used for one function means less for another.

•The same piece of land can only either be used for residential / agricultural / commercial / industrial, rarely for combinations.

Page 11: Sec 2 Unit 11 understanding land supply

Thinking again

“Is there any way to combine these uses?”

Page 12: Sec 2 Unit 11 understanding land supply

Mind-mapping time

(Land) (Residential)(Agricultural) (Commercial) (Industrial)

(Transport)

(Increase in population) (Increase Urbanisation) (Competition for different land use)

(Reasons for the rising demand for land)

(Land constraint)

Let’s do a simple revision exercise

•Take 8-10 minutes to complete the revision exercise.

•Sieve through your notes, locate the suitable answers.
