Bonvicini Earns 700th Career Win: Joan Bonvicini won her 700th career game on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016, a 59-45 win vs. Chicago State in Seattle. With the win, Bonvicini became just the 17th Division I women’s basket-ball coach, 22nd across all divisions, to reach this historic milestone. She is also currently 10th on the Division I active women’s basketball coaches list by wins.

Welcome Home: The Connolly Cen-ter, now known as the Connolly Com-plex, recently received a face lift and renovation throughout the offseason and to start the 2015-16 season. After hosting their first three “home” games on the road, Seattle U played their first game back home vs. Boise State on Dec. 19. The interior is currently finished while the exterior portion of the project is set to be completed in late February or early March with a grand opening celebration scheduled for the beginning of next season.

Second Annual Women in Lead-ership Game: Seattle U women’s basketball held their second annual Women in Leadership game on Sat-urday, Jan. 30 vs. Grand Canyon. The now annual tradition welcomes and celebrates five accomplished women from the Seattle community and, in its first season (2014-15) honored former president and CEO of the WNBA’s Se-attle Storm Karen Bryant, Seattle Chief of Police Kathleen O’Toole, Seattle U VP for Student Development Michele Murray, Director of Seattle’s Com-munity Police Commission Fe Lopez, and SU Trustee Emeritus Anne Farrell. This season, the honorees were Anita

Crawford-Willis, Marvena Kemp, Mar-ilyn Sheldon, Lisa Brummel, and Phyl-lis Campbell. ROOT Sports’ Jen Muel-ler hosted a Q&A with the honorees at a postgame reception.

Turkey Day Success: The Redhawks earned a 78-69 win, Joan Bonvicini’s 695th career win, vs. the host team, LMU, in the first round of the LMU Thanksgiving Classic before falling in the championship game to Princeton. Taelor Ross was named to the All-Tournament team. Famous Relatives: Senior Cydnee Ceballos is the daughter of long-time NBA player Cedric Ceballos, who played most notably for the LA Lak-ers and Phoenix Suns and finished his career with the Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons, and Miami Heat. Ju-nior Taelor Ross is the sister of Ter-rence Ross, who currently plays for the NBA’s Toronto Raptors.

WAC Preseason Polls: The Redhawks were picked to finish third and fourth, respectively, in the Western Ath-letic Conference Coaches and Media preseason polls for 2015-16. In the coaches poll, Taelor Ross represented SU on the preseason First Team while Crystal Allen was named to the Sec-ond Team. In the media poll, Ross was named to the Second Team. NM State and CSU Bakersfield were picked to finish first and second in both polls while Seattle U and UTRGV swapped places in each poll in the only discrep-ancy between the coaches and media polls. Grand Canyon (5th), Utah Valley (6th), UMKC (7th), and Chicago State (8th) rounded out the bottom four.

New WBB Rules: Division I colle-giate women’s basketball will now be played in four 10-minute periods rather than the previous 20-minute halves. Additional rules have been implemented to increase fan experi-ence and speed of play.

Head Coach Joan Bonvicini (701-413)Seventh Season/Southern Connecticut State ‘75

Joan Bonvicini, one of the most successful coaches in women’s collegiate basketball history and former coach at the

University of Arizona and Long Beach State, was named head coach of the Seattle University women’s basketball

team on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009. Most recently, she picked up her 700th career win on Jan. 9, 2016.

The veteran head coach completed her sixth season at Seattle University in 2014-15 behind an all-time 692-400

record and is currently 10th on the NCAA Division I wins list for active women’s college basketball coaches. She is

also the 18th winningest coach all-time among Division I women’s basketball coaches. She became the 18th coach in

NCAA Division I women’s basketball history to reach the 600-win mark in February 2007. The Redhawk head coach

also boasts 22 20-win seasons over her historic coaching career.

Bonvicini’s first Seattle U recruiting class - Kacie Sowell, Ashley Ward, and Sylvia Shephard - completed their Redhawk career in 2013-14 as SU’s top three

Division I career scoring leaders. Sowell was named First Team All-Conference while Sylvia Shephard was named Second Team All-WAC and to the WAC

All-Defensive Team. Ward and Sowell were named to the WAC All-Tournament Team. Bonvicini led the Redhawks to a third place finish in the WAC, mak-

ing it to the Championship game of the WAC Tournament for the second straight year.

In 2012-13 Bonvicini led the Redhawks to a regular season conference title in their first season with full Division I status and their first season in the West-

ern Athletic Conference. She was named WAC Coach of the Year for 2012-13 and was named to the Naismith Women’s College Coach of the Year Top 30.

Bonvicini led the Redhawks to one the most successful seasons in program history during the 2011-12 season, notching their first 20-win season as an

NCAA Division I program, as well as leading them to their first NCAA Division I postseason appearance in school history. Seattle U made it to the semifinals

of the Women’s Basketball Invitational before falling to the University of Northern Iowa, 68-64.

Prior to joining Seattle U, she coached 13 All-Americans and two former US Olympic Team members. While at Arizona, 54 student-athletes earned Pa-

cific-10 accolades and 21 earned conference academic honors. At Arizona, Bonvicini accumulated a 287-223 (.563) record over 17 seasons. She led the

Wildcats to nine postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournament berths and the WNIT Championship in 1996. She was head coach at Arizona

from 1991 to 2008.

Bonvicini is in five halls of fame: the Southern Connecticut State Hall of Fame (1989), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (1994), the Long

Beach State Athletic Hall of Fame (1996), the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame (2005), and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame (2007).

She started her head coaching career at Long Beach State in 1979, posting a 325-71 record (.821) in her 12 seasons with the 49ers. Long Beach State won

24 games or more every season with Bonvicini at the helm. The 49ers earned ten conference championships and ten straight berths in the NCAA Tour-

nament, including Final Four appearances in 1987 and 1988. With the 49ers, she was named the 1981 NCAA Division I Coach of the Year. Following the

1985-86 season she was named the Region VIII and PCAA Coach of the Year. In 1984, she was named WCAA Coach of the Year and has also been honored

by the city of Long Beach as their 1989 “Citizen of the Year”. The East Coast native spent two seasons as an assistant at Long Beach State before being

promoted to head coach at age 25. Prior to joining the 49ers, she began her coaching career as an assistant at Cal Poly - Pomona in Southern California.

A guard during her playing days, Bonvicini helped Southern Connecticut State earn third-and fourth-place finishes in the AIAW Championships. In 1975,

she was named Region I-A MVP and an honorable mention All-American. She was a finalist for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Basketball Team.
