SCOUTING IDAHO: The Vandals come into Thursday’s game with a 5-10 overall record after losing to North Dakota Tuesday, 78-68. Idaho is scoring 59.1 points per game and giving up 65.7 points per contest. Alyssa Charlston is the team leader in scoring and rebounding with 12.7 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Ganeaya Rogers is also averaging in double figures with 10.1 points per game.

SEATTLE U VS. IDAHO: This is the sixth meeting all-time between Seattle U and Idaho, with the Vandals hold-ing a 3-2 series advantage. These two teams first met in Seattle Jan. 7, 1981, with Seattle U squeaking by with a 76-75 victory. Idaho gained a measure of revenge during the 1981 AIAW playoffs, defeating Se-attle U on March 13, 1981, in Billings, Mont., 89-78. Idaho swept the season series in the 1981-82 season, winning in Seattle on Jan. 29, 1982, 89-57, and in Moscow on March 6, 1982, 81-60. These teams did not meet again until last season, a 62-43 victory for Seattle U at the Connolly Center on Dec. 11, 2010. Elle Kerfoot led the Redhawks with 18 points, while Daidra Brown contributed 14 points, five rebounds, four assists, and eight steals.

ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS: Kacie Sowell was named MVP of the Washington Dental Service Holiday Hoops Tournament after notching back-to-back double-double performances. She finished with 17 points and a ca-reer-high 16 rebounds against Saint Francis, and fol-lowed that with a 14-point, 10-rebound performance against Eastern Michigan. Talisa Rhea was also named to the All-Tournament Team, averaging 18.5 points and 6.0 assists per game in the Redhawk victories. Rhea pulled ahead of Sowell in the battle for the team lead in scoring, with Rhea now averaging 13.9 points per game and Sowell averaging 13.6 points per game.

JOINING THE WAC: Seattle University is in its final year as a Division I independent before officially joining the Western Athletic Conference July 1, 2012. The Red-hawks will be part of the WAC in 17 of the 19 sports offered at Seattle U, with men’s soccer and men’s swimming staying in the Mountain Pacific Sports Fed-eration. As of right now, Seattle U will face the follow-ing schools in conference play beginning next season: Denver, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, New Mexico State, San Jose State, Texas-Arlington, Texas-San Antonio, Texas State, and Utah State. Boise State will be rejoining the WAC as a non-football member in July 2013.

HONORS: College Sports Madness has named a Seattle University player the Independent Player of the Week five times this season. Sophomore Kacie Sowell has picked up the honor three times: Nov. 28, Dec. 5, and Jan. 3. Talisa Rhea followed Sowell as a weekly hon-oree Dec. 12 and Dec. 19. Both Rhea and Sowell have also been named to the Jesuit Honor Roll by Jesuit Basketball Spotlight. Rhea picked up the recognition Dec. 19 after the Redhawks’ victory over fellow Jesuit school Santa Clara, while Sowell earned the honor this past Tuesday, Jan. 3, after her MVP performance in the Holiday Hoops Tournament.

NATIONAL RANKINGS: Kacie Sowell is currently sixth in the nation in field goal percentage, hitting 61.5 per-cent of her field goal attempts. By hitting 88.9 percent of her free throw attempts, Ashley Ward is 21st in Di-vision I in free throw percentage, while Talisa Rhea is tied for 24th in the country in assists per game (5.6).

Kerfoot is also 78 points away from becoming the 11th player in Seattle U women’s basketball history to score at least 1,000 points in a career.

SEATTLE U THANKSGIVING TOURNAMENT: Senior Elle Kerfoot and sophomore Ashley Ward were named to the All-Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament Team for their contributions in the two-day tourney. Ward tal-lied 14 points in each game over the weekend, while Kerfoot posted a season-high 19 points on Nov. 25 against USF. For the second consecutive season, the Redhawks fell in the championship game of their an-nual Thanksgiving tournament.

REDHAWKS SIGN THREE TO NLIs: Seattle U signed three student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Joining the Redhawks for the 2012-13 campaign are: Catherine “Cat” Perez (Palo Alto, Calif.), Taelor Ross (Portland, Ore.), and Kristin Stoffel (Everett, Wash.). The incoming class of 2016 boasts a trio of versatile players who are all over six feet tall.

head coach joan bonvicinithird season/southern Connecticut state ‘75

Joan Bonvicini, one of the most successful coaches in women’s collegiate bas-ketball history and former coach at the University of Arizona and Long Beach State, was named head coach of the Seattle University women’s basketball team on Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009.

The veteran head coach enters her third season at Seattle University behind an all-time 626-340 (.648) record and is 26th on the NCAA all-time wins list for women’s college basketball at all levels. She became the 18th coach in NCAA Division I women’s basketball history to reach the 600-win mark in February

2007. The Redhawk head coach also boasts 20 20-win seasons over her historic coaching career.

Seattle U showed significant improvement during the 2010-11 season, earning eight victories against a tough schedule. The team earned victories at Portland and at Long Beach State as well as home wins over Idaho, Navy, and Eastern Washington. Behind the work of Bonvicini, the Redhawks also hosted the Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament, featuring Bowling Green, UALR, and Montana State, and the State Farm Holiday Classic, involving eventual national finalist Notre Dame, Elite Eight team Gonzaga, and Loyola Marymount.

Bonvicini helped guide the Redhawks through their first full season at the NCAA Division I level. During the season, she coached Seattle U to six DI victories in 2009-10. Under the first season head coach’s tutelage senior Ashley Brown to become the most prolific three-point shooter in SU history, behind 87 three’s in a single season. Brown was also named MVP of the Seattle U Thanksgiving Tournament, to the Longwood All-Tournament Team and to the All-Independent Second Team. Fellow senior Cassidy Murillo earned Seattle U Thanksgiving All-Tournament Team honors and junior Tatiana Heck was named to the All-Independent Second Team, as well.

In addition to their improvement and growth as a reclassifying institution on the court, the Redhawks saw great success in the classroom. Seattle U was named to the WBCA Top 25 Team Honor Roll among all NCAA DI institutions. The Redhawks were ranked No. 20 for their team cumulative grade point average of 3.341.

Prior to joining Seattle U, she coached 13 All-Americans and two former US Olympic Team members. While at Arizona, 54 student-athletes earned Pacific-10 accolades and 21 earned conference academic honors.

At Arizona, Bonvicini accumulated a 287-223 (.563) record over 17 seasons. She led the Wildcats to nine postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournament berths and the WNIT Championship in 1996. She was head coach at Arizona from 1991 to 2008.

Bonvicini is in five halls of fame: the Southern Connecticut State Hall of Fame (1989), the Connecticut Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (1994), the Long Beach State Athletic Hall of Fame (1996), the Pima County Sports Hall of Fame (2005), and the New England Basketball Hall of Fame (2007).

She started her head coaching career at Long Beach State in 1979, posting a 325-71 record (.821) in her 12 seasons with the 49ers. Long Beach State won 24 games or more every season with Bonvicini at the helm. The 49ers earned ten conference championships and ten straight berths in the NCAA Tournament, including Final Four appearances in 1987 and 1988.

With the 49ers, she was named the 1981 NCAA Division I Coach of the Year. Following the 1985-86 sea-son she was named the Region VIII and PCAA Coach of the Year. In 1984, she was named WCAA Coach of the Year and has also been honored by the city of Long Beach as their 1989 “Citizen of the Year”.

The East Coast native spent two seasons as an assistant at Long Beach State before being promoted to head coach at age 25. Prior to joining the 49ers, she began her coaching career as an assistant at Cal Poly - Pomona in Southern California.

A guard during her playing days, Bonvicini helped Southern Connecticut State earn third-and fourth-place finishes in the AIAW Championships. In 1975, she was named Region I-A MVP and an honorable mention All-American. She was a finalist for the 1976 U.S. Olympic Basketball Team.
