SASC Chair Monthly Report

Hello family!

I’m really excited to have Kia, our regional Alternate Delegate, speak to us today about GSR service! That being said, I would like to request that we keep reports brief and any discussion pushed to Open Sharing so we can give her the time she needs and deserves to share with us. In June, Theo, our Regional delegate, will be here to talk to us about Consensus Based Decision Making. I would like to continue to occasionally bring in members to share with us on various topics related to service in Narcotics Anonymous and I want us all to get the most out of it. I would like to ask for your input around what kinds of topics you would like to know more about. Please feel free to email me directly at [email protected] with your suggestions.

The audit has been scheduled for Sat, July 27th, time and location to be determined. More info to come as details are settled.

We held the quarterly admin meeting yesterday. Our Vice Chair will have details on that meeting and the minutes for that meeting will be included with this month’s Area minutes when they go out in the next couple weeks.

In loving service,

Naomi L

Addendum:

Hello,

I was informed by the church contact that this space is not available for our scheduled Area in September, so we will be meeting here on the 15th that month, instead of the 8th. The minutes will be updated to reflect that change moving forward.

Tyler will be giving us another installment of his budget presentation today.

Also, we have our Regional Delegate, Theo, here to talk to us about Consensus Based Decision Making.

ILS,

Naomi L, SASC Chair

SASC Vice Chair Monthly Report Hello family, I’d like to touch on last month’s grievance that was conducted. It was an unprecedented and rare occurrence and we proceeded to the best of our ability. Due to the Chair having a personal tie with the individual bringing up the grievance - the responsibility was left to me to mediate. We haven’t had a grievance brought up to this body in over 10 years. There was no guide. And we did our best. I thank you all for your patience and allowing the 10th concept of service - “Any member of a service body can petition that body for the redress of a personal grievance, without fear of reprisal” I’d like to take this opportunity to address that both the Chair and myself have had mixed feelings be expressed to us by voting members of the body - some believe our ‘tone’ is too aggressive and some love that we seem to be taking charge. This is the first time in the Seattle Area’s entire history that we’ve had the Chair and Vice Chair be young, and female presenting members. We will sometimes come off as shrill, overpowering, and stern. We are passionate and strong, we are human - and most importantly, we care deeply - and during hard times, both of us take moments to remind our selves that the same power working on us is working on the rest of the body - to keep our focus on the goal - carrying the message that an addict, any addict, can stop using, lose the desire to use, and find a new way to live. Our message is of hope and our promise is freedom from active addiction. For this past month, (as the ad hoc Activities Subcommittee Chair) I’m happy to report that we had a wonderful Easter Egg hunt and I will leave the rest of the report to be read by DJ for that role. Thank you so much for being here, truly, what we do here is important. We are the lifeline to the still suffering addict and what we do here has lasting impact. In Loving Service, Jin-Ah K. SASC Activities Chair Monthly Report

Hi everyone, I am thrilled to announce that we are at the necessary capacity for breakthrough by the bay. We have been successful in negotiating several different accommodations for our members. It looks like this event will be very well attended. We are however in great need of people willing to stay behind Sunday morning to make sure the camp is left how we found it. (If not better). We have several activities planned that will be fine her both adults and children. Including movies and bingo men and women meetings and coed campfire meetings we will be having s'mores and there are also plans for a morning exercise also a hike to the top of the mountain at the end there will be a meeting. I will be releasing a list of suggested items for people to bring who are the people that have asked. We have a couple members that have asked about rides out there so if you have room in your car and you're willing to be a service I can hook you up with our members in need. Looking forward to fourth of July I'm not sure that our committee has the ability to put this event on by ourselves there hadn't been any planning when I stepped in and I'm not sure with the time frame I have I will be able to organize this was my committee. That being said we are looking for solutions to this problem. Thank you for the opportunity to be a service Artemis w

RCM2

Hello Family,

I attended the 138th Washington North Idaho Region of Narcotics Anonymous Regional Service Committee meeting on April 12th - 13th.

Our Regional Delegates spent time with us talking about their experience at the Western States Zonal Forum, how awesome it is for them to connect with fellow addicts that are as passionate for service and the program of NA as they are, and the impact the Forum has had on the different Regions willingness to support the Alaska Region in different ways, like us donating access to the Zoom platform last year to help them connect easier with the distance they have with one another. From this discussion, a motion was presented asking for our Region to assist the Alaska Region's RD team with attending this years WSLD in Seattle. It was passed and we will purchase two tickets for them to make the event.

Just a reminder that our RD team is always available for information or assistance with service related issues.

They also want to give a reminder that there is no effective way to report on everything in NA World Services that is of interest to everyone. Here are many of the references that Service Enthusiasts use to familiarize themselves with what is going on. If that is you, feel free to take a look.

● NAWS NEWS - https://www.na.org/?ID=reports-nawsnews-nawsmain ● NA Way Magazine - https://www.na.org/?ID=naway-toc ● Reaching Out - https://www.na.org/?ID=reaching-out-index ● NAWS Annual Reports - https://www.na.org/?ID=ar-2016 ● Fellowship Intellectual Property Trust - https://www.na.org/?ID=legal-bulletins-fipt

And if you were unaware, there are a few projects World is currently undertaking. Such as the new book, Spiritual Principle a Day which you can visit www.na.org/spad to access the material and make a submissions yourself. And there is also the Mental Health/Mental Illness IP Project and more information on that can be found at www.na.org/mhmi We voted in a couple of positions, Kristen H as Treasurer and Sabrina S as PI Chair. Literature Chair was tabled until July.

There was a Fellowship Service Association, FSA, meeting this quarter to discuss the issues that have been involving the Taxes. A good portion of the Regional Meeting also revolved around these issues, either in discussion or the numerous Motions that were submitted. There is a lot of information regarding this topic in the RSC minutes, so I would recommend checking them out at www.wnirna.org/service-minutes as it would be too much to cover in this already lengthy report.

And now for All Subs reports.

Activities has looked into who should be attending their meeting according to Area guidelines and has reached out to the various Chairs reminding them of what Regional Activities does and the potential support it can provide. With that little push, they ended up having better attendance and were able to fill all vacant positions. A reminder that we can send all Area events flyers to the regional events activities calendar coordinator at [email protected] and they will get posted to the regional events calendar.

IT has rotated out the web servant potions for the first time in years, there is a discussion to moving the web platform that Region, and all other Areas, currently use, and there will be a demo for a potential service called YAP that integrates online schedules, websites, and phonelines all into one

system. We have a Zoom calendar up and running on the Regional website. If your area or even meeting has a need for Zoom, submit a request to [email protected] and they will get you added in.

Literature held a quick workshop on the SPAD mention above and discussed the IDT on DRT/MAT. They are in need of a Literature Chair, so if you are interested, please attend All Subs in July.

There is also a Guideline Ad-Hoc currently in place that is looking to update all the All Subs Guidelines as well as Regional Guidelines with hopes to create a similar format for everyone.

There are two regional motions that we need to vote on:

Motion 1 Date: April 13, 2019 Motion Made by: Mellissa R Representing: Tri Cities Seconded by: Brian P Representing: Blue mountain I move: The RSC not sanction of require the previous RSC Auditor, Joanne H., to pay any money to the RSC for any penalties or fines incurred to the IRS. Intent: To support our trusted servant who in no way was willfully or deliberately negligent in her duties to the RSC. Rationale (if needed): We are a fellowship of addicts who come together in service to further our primary purpose. Our trusted servants should be supported and well trained by their predecessors. It is clear that the training necessary for this position did not happen. In cases of willful deliberate theft of regional funds there may be a case for requiring financial restitution-- This is not that type of issue. The previous auditor does not owe any financial restitution she did not lose or steal anything. It is our belief that no one can dictate to another addict when or how any amends need to be made financial or otherwise. It is also well known that there have been previous issues where financial loss was incurred and no one was required to repay or “make the RSC whole.” Motion must go back to Area/groups: yes ____X__ no ___ ____ Motion 2

Date: April 13, 2019

Motion Made by: Christina B Representing: Chelan Douglas County Seconded by: Kristin Representing: Greater Cascade Loop I move: The Auditor timeline be added to RSC Guidelines, Appendix A Section 5 Intent: To make sure no steps are missed in the tax filing process. Rationale (if needed): To expand on procedure of filing taxes. Motion must go back to Area/groups: yes __X____ no _______ With that, I just have an announcement left. WSLD 2019 will be taking place in our neck of the woods Nov 8 - Nov 10 at the SeaTac Marriott. What is WSLD? I am glad you asked. Western Service Learning Days (WSLD) is an annual conference that focuses on Narcotics Anonymous services in Public Information (PI)/Public Relations (PR), Phonelines, Web Pages, Outreach, and Hospitals and Institutions (H&I). Thus, giving NA members an opportunity to learn and share about issues and solutions. The event is hosted each year by a different Area or Region within thirteen western United States, two western Provinces of Canada, and Mexico. More information can be found at https://wsld.org/

SASC Public Relations Chair Monthly Report Hey SASC, Sorry I couldn't make it today. This report is going to be pretty slim today. PR still needs a chair. I am working with a few folks to find us a better meeting location. With that, will come an increase in rent. We don't have anything solid set yet but are working on a solution that works well for everyone. When that happens, I'll be requesting an increase in funding from SASC so that we do not have to dip into our current budget(which only calls for $10 worth of rent, which is not feasible). More will be revealed. In service, Steve F.

SASC Unity Day 2020 Chair Monthly Report

Tricia P 06/02/2019 Hi Family, First off, I would like to apologize for my absence last month. I was taking care of Unity Day 2019 speakers from out of town. I would also like to say how excited I am about the next Unity Day and appreciate the opportunity to be of service. I attended the ADHOC committee meeting to come up with ideas on how Unity Day, and activities could better serve the body. While we had a few strong personalities, I believe the outcome was ideal. I would like to bring to the body the idea that any changes to Unity Day or activities apply to the next committee, as the Unity Day committee has been at a standstill with committee meetings waiting to see what happens. I have put together a team of awesome individuals who would love to be of Service for Unity Day. Some have decided on a position, while some are still undecided. Those individuals are. Shanna M- Undecided Clayton G- Undecided Michael P- Arts and Graphics Mark S- Entertainment Ashley W- Undecided Elizabeth B- Undecided A couple of concerns were expressed from members about the previous Unity Day.

1. We need a more diverse group of speakers. 2. We needed a more detailed program explaining where each workshop is. We have heard

these concerns and will work to make sure these needs are met. I have set up a meeting space for the Unity Day committee at Edmonds Lutheran Church, and have already reached out to Suzanne, the SCC facilitator, to get the information we need to start the process. Thanks for letting me be of service. Tricia P

SASC Ad-Hoc Committee Reports

SASC Ad-Hoc Committee for Activities Finances

We held our meeting on Sunday, May 19 at the Wedgewood Broiler at 11:00 am. There were 10 NA members in attendance including GSRs, Activities, SINAC, and the Seattle Area treasurer. We had a great discussion and made a lot of progress. First we had some general discussion and discussed our problem statement. We followed the Area Service Planning tool and broke into groups to brainstorm and had a great dialog about potential solutions. Then we presented ideas to the group, along with more dialog, and then we voted on our favorite solutions. The three that had the most votes were:

● Reduce the number of Activities mandatory events ● Hold Unity Day every other year ● Have similar financial guidelines (Unity Day, Activities and SINAC)

We still need to meet one more time to come up with an action plan for these items before we bring them as a motion or motions to Area. So far it is looking like the meeting will take place next Saturday June 9th in the afternoon. Thank you for allowing me to be of service. Problem Statement Activities and Unity Day (along with SINAC) compete every year for fellowship dollars and service participation. Over the years, Activities participation has diminished resulting in a lack of attraction and support. Discussion Questions

1. Can we restructure these subcommittees to better serve the area? 2. Is there room to manage area funds more responsibly regarding these committees? (The

Admin budget is underfunded every quarter) Attendees:

SASC Ad-Hoc Committee for SSP

HI everyone I hope this comes to you with an open-mind and willingness to see what we could look like as a fellowship in our area going forward. On Saturday May 18th 2019 the ADHOC Committee met for the first time. We had 10 members from our area that showed up and participated in this ADHOC Committee. We discussed many things “about what it would look like” and “ how it would be if we decided to split into 3 different areas here the Seattle Area Of Narcotics Anonymous. There was many questions and ideas that we all talked about, “with what ifs and what about’s.” With all of us not having all the answers or direction, we came up with an idea of inviting fellow members from other Area’s that have been involved with Areas that have decided to split into smaller groups in order to honor our current members of Narcotics Anonymous and to attract future members of Narcotics Anonymous. I have spoken with 6 members across the United States that have been involved in this similar process. I have also spoken with a World Board member who has agreed to come talk to the SASC in the next couple of months, I believe he will be at our Area in September 2019. At our next meeting we will be having 2 members 1 from California and 1 from Oregon Facetiming in on our next ADHOC Committee meeting to give us ideas and direction. We have also created a map of KING County and have color coordinated it with what it would look like if we decided to enter into this journey.
