Learn how to treat your allergy symptoms so that you can enjoy the nice weather! Visit one of our Morelli’s Pharmacy locations and follow these tips: Tips to reduce your exposure: • Avoid outdoor activities in the morning (when pollen count is highest), or on dry windy days. Pollen counts are lowest after a good rain • After outdoor activities remove clothing and shower to wash pollen from skin and hair • Have others help with lawn mowing, gardening and other activities that increase your exposure to allergens • Watch your local news or weather station for pollen counts to help plan outdoor activities • Keep windows and doors closed at night • Start taking allergy medications before your symptoms start Over-the-Counter Medications for Allergies: • First generation antihistamines (chlorpheniramine and diphenhydramine) are useful for itching, sneezing and hives, but may not help nasal congestion. Desloratadine and cetirizine may reduce nasal congestion. • Saline sinus rinses may also help to alleviate nasal symptoms • Eye drops such as sodium cromoglycate may help with itchy eyes. Artificial tears provide a barrier, dilute allergens and help flush allergens from the surface of the eye. Chilling these may provide added relief. • When symptoms are still not controlled you may need a steroid nasal spray (some are available without a prescription) or a prescription antihistamine • Antihistamines may interact with some prescription medications and may need to be avoided if you have certain medical conditions. Always consult your pharmacist before starting a new medication.
