President
We’ve had another successful patrol season for the 2009/10 year and I commend the patrolling members in particular, for completing yet another season without the loss of life on our beach.
It goes without saying that that is the most important reason we exist, the lives that were rescued (326) and the high number of preventative actions performed by our members (4298) are a tremendous indicator of the value of the service you provide to the tourists and the locals who trust you to keep them safe.
There are now more patrolling members available than we’ve seen for quite a while and I would like to thank Scott and his team (Breanna, Louise and Bart in particular) for the great job they do in ensuring that new members become proficient and existing members retain their proficiency each year.
To the Patrol Captains and their 2IC’s, thanks again for your guidance, direction and mentoring of the newer members to ensure that the service we offer is without peer. We have a had a couple of instances this year that have made us proud with the younger members standing up and putting into practice what they have learnt whilst on patrol. Danny Pointing and Emily Schofield in particular made headlines this year with their actions. Well done.
We’ve been well served in the Juniors with Danny Jones leading his team for a second year. You’ve done a great job Danny and it is really pleasing to see the high number of quality 14 year olds stepping up into the seniors during the year. Your assistance in all matters building related has also been of great value and we hope that your involvement and expertise remains in some capacity as you move from the JAC chairman role.
We can look at Surf Sports partly with some pleasure, partly with unfilled expectations. We still have a long way to go to ensure the program we offer is professional,
well resourced and seen as a compelling reason to compete for our club. Trevor Hendy’s involvement again at training and competition has been great. It is good to see you back mate, to impart your knowledge and positivity to our competitors. Whilst we still don’t have enough competitors to help make up some teams, we have a plan for next year to try and improve on the numbers.
The most pleasing aspect of our competition this year has been the efforts of young guns coming through such as Danny Pointing, Harrison Jones, Jaeden Sasaki, Ziggie Zantiotis, Max Dempsey and Michaela Henderson. They have had role models in Zac Orchard, Andrew Laker and Matt Peters to keep them aware of the pecking order at events such as the Japan trip and at the Sydney carnivals. What they learn and see from these trips is invaluable in helping mould them into the great adults they will become. The competition bolter has been Luke Bartlett, a newer member who has shown great talent and promise in events that he’d never been in before this season.
A special mention to one of our newer competitor’s in Stephanie Ballantine. Great results at the recent Australian Pool Rescue Championships picking up two gold and two silver. I hope you get a ticket to Egypt for the World Titles with the National Team.
I’d like to mention a big thank you again to our significant supporters in Ray White Surfers Paradise, Centro Surfers Paradise, Secure Parking, Rotary Surfers Paradise and Nerang RSL. Your support is very much appreciated. Without you we would struggle financially, and in being able to attract members through the chronic lack of permanent parking we have for members.
The work that the Ray White team, led by Greg Bell and Selena Carson this year and very ably assisted by Andrew Bell and Janine Bell, made our Sportsman Lunch a success yet again and raised in excess of $40,000 - much needed funds for the Club. Shane O’Connor in
6
particular did a mountain of work in organising donated items that could be used to raise money via the auctions held on the day. I’d be very surprised if Socsy doesn’t know most people on the Coast – certainly those that count anyway, thanks mate.
I believe we are at the crossroads with the Supporters Club. It should be almost debt free to Nerang RSL and we have Nerang RSL commitment to stay involved for the next few years. The Special General Meeting held in January supported a major (conditional) borrowing that would see some much needed improvements to the tired looking function and bar areas of the Club.
It goes without saying that the Surf Club needs to see a return from this exercise and doesn’t want to spend money on a facility upgrade for areas that may be obsolete in a few years time. Painting of the exterior and interior (downstairs) should have been done by the time you read this report. We also should have some much needed improvements occurring to the female toilets and showers as a matter of some urgency.
Financially, we are in a sound position with debt continuing to come down and a safe amount in the bank for expected upcoming needs. In particular I’d like to thank the work that Mandy has done to support the Committee and to make things happen when we are always too busy with our own day jobs. Thanks Mandy.
Finally, from a Committee perspective, unfortunately it has been a very ordinary year. It was recognised at last year’s AGM that there was a need for change and change should be for the good. I for one don’t necessarily think that some of the changes were particularly well thought out. Election of Committee members should be based on suitability for the roles in the Club’s best interest, not purely a popularity contest.
There were significant distractions occurring behind the scenes that most of you may not have been aware of during the whole season. It is clearly why it has been difficult during a great number of Committee meetings
to get outcomes that were the best for the whole Club. Ensuring the financial viability of our Club by trying to implement sound business practices is not an attempt to undermine Club traditions.
I consider being a member of this Surf Club an honour, and being a Committee member a privilege and a responsibility that should be taken seriously.
I won’t be standing again this year for this role or any position of authority. It has become too time consuming to run this surf club (business) for the greater good of the members. I would particularly like to thank my wife Lynda, for her support during the past few years whilst I have been on the committee and for the past year in particular, when things have been the most challenging.

Well what a great response to this year’s Lunch in a very tight economic climate. It would not have been possible without the generous support of our great sponsor Ray White ‘The Surfers Paradise Group’ and in particular Greg Bell and Selina Carson. Also, on the day, thanks to Andrew Bell, Greg’s wife Janine and the Ray White Surfers Paradise staff.
Thank you to our beverage sponsors Fosters Group for the beer and Pepper Tree wines supplied by Mark Willoughby from Dejavu Wines. Our guest speaker, local boy, Olympic Rowing Gold Medalist and World Champion Duncan Free gave us an insight into the grueling final in Beijing and the commitment and sacrifice required to achieve the pinnacle of your chosen sport.
Others that helped make the day a success were the chef and staff at Melbas, our two “Coaches on
the Couch” Joey Wright from the Gold Coast Blaze basketball team and Guy McKenna, Coach of our Gold Coast Football AFL Club.We had a small committee that organised the whole thing and it would be remiss of me not to mention Mandy Hurst for liaising with Selina and previous donors to come up with prizes for our raffle and auction items.
The Ray White Auction team is outstanding and their professionalism got us the maximum return. Thank you to the individuals and companies that purchased tables. We really do appreciate the support and it provides vital funds for our voluntary beach patrols.
See you in 2011 at the Lunch. We hope to be having this function in our own clubhouse next year.

Thank you to all members on a job well done over the past year.
We have had an increase in the number of patrol member thanks to the great efforts of our training crew and have seen better retention which has meant more numbers on patrols. There were a few BBQ’s held towards the end of the season to encourage our members to gather and socialize. More of these types of events will be held in the future to encourage everyone to get to know each other as most members don’t know many people outside of their rostered patrol.
Thank you to our sponsors who have contributed towards keeping the bathing public safe at our beach. Our equipment must be maintained to the highest standard for use on patrols and without your support this wouldn’t have been possible.
There will still be some action at the Club during the off-season with Sunday morning paddles for those interested. The training crew will also be conducting winter courses so check the newsletter and emails for information on these.
The existence of our Surf Club is due to the great efforts of our members patrolling the beach. It is your Surf Club so if you have any ideas about how things could be improved or if you want to become involved with any activities, please let any of the Club Officers know so we can continue to make Surfers Paradise SLSC a great place to be. Have Fun
Finley TaylorSECRETARY
Gold Coast City Council
During the past season, in appreciation of our ongoing contribution to the Gold Coast community and as part of GCCC support of our city’s non-profit community groups, the Club received a grant from the GCCC.
Mayor Ron Clarke MBE asked that his gratitude be passed on to all members and to let them know the hard work and commitment are the ‘heart of the city’ and the efforts are greatly appreciated. The Club also receives a substantial discount on our rates each year by way of a donation from the GCCC.
Telstra Assistance Fund
The Club received a 50/50 grant via the Telstra Assistance Fund and were approved to purchase nine rescue tubes; a saving of over $500! Our thanks to Telstra and SLSA for organising this!

Management Meeting Attendance
Having only stepped into the role as of March 2010, I would
firstly like to recognise Norm Forrest for his contributions in this
roll prior to my appointment and thank the Committee for their
support to date.
I am pleased to say that the club is in a sound financial position as
at 30/4/2010 with total net income of over $56,000, which is up
30% on last year and with cash in the bank of over $110,000. Our
loan commitments to Westpac have been reduced by a further
$129,000, while our overall debt commitments have reduced by
almost $200,000 for the year.
We have had issues historically with the monies being received
from the Supporters Club being recognised in the accounts
as “donations”, which hinders the Club when applying for
government grants. With the help / advice from our Auditor and
following on from the Special General Meeting held earlier in the
year, we are in the process of formalising a lease agreement
with the Supporters Club for their use of the ground floor
premises. Once in place, this revenue will be accounted for as
direct revenue; for the financial year just gone, this accounted
for $168,000. Although this revenue will no longer be accounted
for as a “donation”, the Supporters Club remains an important
contributor to the Club and their efforts and that of their
Committee are greatly appreciated.
From a grants perspective, we currently have several applications
in the pipeline for more rescue and first aid equipment, with the
Local Government Grant program for 2010 kicking off shortly.
During the season just past, the Club was successful in securing
the following grant revenue - State Government ($21,640
DES, $20,000 - one off to repair storm damage from Dept of
Communities, $3,416 Volunteer Grant Program). From Local
Government ($23,153 Community Grant, donation on rates and
$2000 Life Saving Grant administered through South Coast
Branch).
Sponsorships again formed an important source of funds and we
are ever grateful for our major sponsors continued support. In
particular I would like to acknowledge Ray White Surfers Paradise
($40,000+), Centro Surfers Paradise $35,000 and in kind support
from Secure Parking providing the parking downstairs on
weekends.
The Committee is currently working on a sponsorship
arrangement for the acquisition of a new ATV, and will provide
further information to our members as this progresses.
Finally, to those individuals who continually support the Club
on fundraising drives throughout the year, thank you for your
continued support.

Thank you all so much this patrol season for your ongoing commitment and dedication on the beach here at Surfers Paradise. It seems to be a great environment during patrols where we are able to create a fun and enjoyable atmosphere whilst still providing a professional service to the community. I feel this is a major part of maintaining such a strong volunteer base.
Thanks to the patrol captains who stood up and took control of their team and the beach. It is great to see you coming back every year and I hope you do the same in this coming season.
It was a busy time at Surfers Paradise with a growing beach population due to the huge development and highrises close by. This is going to be the case for years to come so we need to endeavor to grow our membership base and help and encourage each other to be involved around our Club and especially on our beach. I want to congratulate Scott Andrews and his training team again for providing us SRC and Bronze Medallion holders. He does a wonderful job with countless volunteer hours running courses, paperwork then backing up to run his own patrol, team 9. Well done Scotty!
It was great to see all the younger SRC and Bronzies on patrol, not only on their rostered patrols but coming down the beach and signing on voluntary patrols. This is a great way to up skill and learn from different Patrol Captains and older members. Keep it up and enjoy yourselves.
A big pat on the back to all members who found themselves in tricky situations with rescues, first aids and the resuscitation. A combination of skills and teamwork again saw these situations handled correctly and professionally showing that we all can pull through the tough times we face. Congratulations to all who were involved.
Once again thank you to Finley Taylor and Peter Anderson for your efforts setting up the early morning patrols; this is a major part of our extended services in
providing swimmers a safe haven for swimming and preventing people that may not be in the right state for swimming from entering the water. This time of the morning is critical for us in preventions as everyone is well aware that we sit right in the nightclub precinct and get a lot of people straight from there that want to swim for whatever reason. So well done guys and all other members that have helped out throughout the year at these times.
Thank you to the GCCC Lifeguard Service, Warren Young and his team for their help and support throughout the year. This is now a well established relationship where we have the opportunity to work in together and help each other out, because in the end we are there for the same reasons.
Khan Hamill & Satomi Nakamura
I would like to thank my Vice Captain and brother Zayne for his help and support throughout the year; Grahame Long, Louise Gardiner and Paul Conroy for their extra work with IRBs and first aid; Andrew Worling for all his efforts in and around the Club, always helping myself and many others when in need of assistance (thanks for living close to the Club!); to all Committee members and other positions within in the Club, thanks for everyone’s efforts.
Club Captain
11
Also thanks to all our sponsors, without you guys we would not be able to provide such an extensive and professional service. With your donations we are able to keep our rescue gear up to scratch and up to date. Thank you so much.
So everyone please enjoy the off season, we are back on the beach early September. Thank you everyone once again for all your efforts to ensure Surfers Paradise Beach was fatality free again this season.

As I sit and write this report on the other side of the world, it makes me realise just how much I miss our beach, the sand and the great weather, not to mention the great group of members we have in our Club. Sitting over 250km from anything that resembles a beach, I now better understand why people take their safety in the surf for granted; when you’re that far away from the beach, when you get there all you are interested in is the sun, waves and getting wet. It’s for this reason our role in protecting the bathing public is so vitally important and why we must be at the top of our game every time we pull on our red and yellow caps. Updating our skills and training and education is just one way we can achieve this.
Some key numbers and trends for 2009/2010:
44 new members ready to hit the beach with their Bronze and/ or Surf Rescue Certificate which is slightly down on last year;
282 senior awards shared between 113 members, increasing from last season;
69 senior members who gained new awards, increasing from last season;
40 junior awards and 171 competencies which is down from last year, something to focus on next season and highlights the need for a Junior Awards/ Education Officer;
637 senior proficiencies which is significantly up on last year (382), which indicates our retention rate of members is excellent as each member holding multiple awards compounds this number;
Increased the number of members completing proficiencies from 115 last year to 171 this year; a fantastic result.
Proficiencies for the 2010/2011 season will involve a simplified version of the proficiency paper, focusing on operational needs and feedback from patrol inspections, however everyone with a Bronze Medallion who doesn’t hold a Defibrillator Certificate will be required to update their skills and complete a Defib induction which is now part of the Bronze Medallion since the 33rd edition Training Manual.
Chief Training Officer
New awards for the coming season will include:
4WD Operator Certificate, meaning any member who wishes to use a 4WD vehicle on the beach will be required to complete the course prior to December 31;
Advanced Resuscitation Techniques (ART) which will combine the ARC and Defib into a single course and assessment;
ATV Operator Certificate which will replace the ATV Induction and will require all existing holders of an induction to complete a “challenge” assessment, similar to when the IRB Crew was removed (again) from the Bronze Medallion many years ago.
There will also be some changes to existing awards with prerequisites and course duration including IRB Crew, Operational (Senior) First Aid, Pain Management and Spinal Management. As these courses are released and updated we’ll keep you posted, so make sure you check out the details in the Club’s monthly newsletters. This is also the place where we announce our upcoming courses.
When you look at our new award matrix for this season, it’s pleasing to see a number of new Training Officer Certificates including Louise (Radio), Breanna (Radio), Troy (SRC), Mark (IRB), Finley (TOC) as well as Louise and Breanna as our newest Bronze Medallion Assessors.
Thanks to the entire crew and everyone who helped out with training this season including Louise, Breanna, Finley, Bart, Troy Holden, Shane Lawler, Mark Stafford, Paul Conroy, Cameron Bain, Nik Algio, Becky Gellel and Jarrod Walsh. You should be proud of the number of people you’ve trained and the very high standard that they have achieved.
There were some very impressive results achieved by our members in training; namely Shane Gower our number one new award holder gaining seven awards, closely followed by Elissa Cadwell, Denise Fox and Satomi Nakamura all gaining six new awards; great stuff guys and girls.
13
You’ll see in the table a breakdown of our awards gained. We had planned at the beginning of the season to bring our IRB training to patrols to help those who couldn’t make it to a “traditional” course; however changes in the Branch requirements for training ruled this out. We’ll try again in the coming season.

Although basic defibrillation use is now included in the Bronze Medallion, I strongly encourage all members to complete the ARC and Defib course. At our beach alone the defib was applied three times this season and a life saving shock delivered once. Well done to Cameron and Patrol 12; without your skills and experience a young lady would not be with us today. As our Club membership grows, we plan at some stage increasing the number of patrols so we don’t have to be rostered so frequently; though you’re still welcome to come down for a voluntary at any time.
To do this, we need more Patrol Captain awards and ‘higher’ awards such as Operational First Aid, ARC
and Defib and IRB Drivers to help balance out the skills requirements for each patrol. Throughout the off season is a great time to gain these without the time management hassles trying to juggle patrols, surf sports and of course, having a life away from the beach!
Remember that we should always be practicing our skills as well as upgrading them. If you need some practice and help with paddling a board or swimming in the surf, please talk a member of the Training Crew or our Club Coaches so we can work a schedule of sessions to meet your needs; all you have to do is ask! If it’s quiet on patrol, why not practice your skills in a rescue and resuscitation scenario? It will keep you fresh and help with patrol inspections.
Enjoy your (short) time off throughout the off season and we all look forward to seeing you next season. If you find yourself missing all your friends from the beach on the weekends you could always come down and attend one of our many courses on offer; keep watching the newsletter!

Congratulations Surfers Paradise, you climbed the pointscore again! You grew in numbers again! Some new faces and the old! More events, more teams. Well done!
Early in our season we had three guys complete the Coolangatta Gold! It’s been a long time since Surfers has had representation in this gruelling event. Congratulations Luke Lorenzin, Finley Taylor and Andrew Worling!
Patrick Kelly leading the surfers, Matt Peters leading the beach and Zac Orchard stepping up has led Surfers through a great year! How can I forget the masters with Chappo leading the way!
Our Juniors who have raced up one or two age groups all season have been inspirational! It’s exciting to think where we will be 2010/11 season and beyond with the addition of these juniors to the senior ranks, the addition of our new athletes and the development of our current athletes!
Trevor Hendy, Leon Zagel, Shannon EcksteinZayne & Jane Hamill
Well done Zayne Hamill who has put in another enormous year going above and beyond! Our competitors are reaching their goals and the snowball effect has started. The hard work is really paying off now. Athletes are now attracted to what we have to offer and our new recruits will be lethal next season. Congratulations to Zayne on the Branch team coaching position along with our Branch team members Abbey Short, Jaeden Sasaki and Zac Orchard.
Trevor Hendy’s sessions were great and having him at carnivals is adding to the success and the environment! Thanks Trev! Warren has the beachie’s looking sharp with son Matt, Robert and Max as standouts! A big thanks to all our coaching team - Zayne, Trev and Warren. I would like to thank our Team Manager on a great first year! Also our Officials who without them our competitors would not be able to race!
We have provided training and support to areas requiring growth and new events with great success! Finley Taylor has introduced, coached and competed in the Patrol Comp, Champion Lifesaver and First Aid events. The Club will now grow in this arena. Thanks Fin!
We have also made a positive move by taking on the new pool rescue events and we will be offering training and support to those who want to get involved. Sending a team to our first pool nationals in June was a big accomplishment with pool rescue competitions now on our competition calendar! Stay tuned for results!
Our athletes have enjoyed a short break however with the Stillwater competition, Coolangatta Gold, 2010 International Life Saving Championships in Egypt in October, long distance races and the next season on the horizon, we are already back in action!
In the ‘off season’, winter 2009, the Club fielded a touch football team in the Labrador Touch Association competition. This was their first hit out and they went undefeated throughout the season to win the grand final in convincing style. The 2010 season has started out in similar fashion and the team is one of the best looking on the field thanks to the team singlets sponsored by Signal Advantage – Graham Budinger’s business. Thanks Graham and good luck team.
As a Surf Club it is clear we are growing in most areas. I’d like to thank the members for your support during the year. Many members joined us at carnivals to cheer on our competitors. Thank you! I hope you are as excited as me for the 2010/11 season! See you at the Club!

Masters Team ReportLast season saw us compete in five carnivals – Brunswick, Alexandra Headlands, Branch, State and Aussies. We welcomed some first time competitors into the masters with some nipper dads getting involved. The Brunswick carnival was held in perfect offshore conditions which were complemented with excellent post carnival activities. Next year we plan to camp at the Brunswick Surf Club to partake in more post carnival activities so everyone is welcome as this is a great first up carnival for new comers. Next season we hope to welcome back more past as well as new competitors, with the current known ones being Brad Edwards and Bill Haylock.
The State and Australian Titles saw credible results in big seas. The team brought home many medals with most of them being team events. Later this year a number of us are heading off to Egypt for the World Titles. Anyone interested is welcome to join us.
Surfer’s Masters are mainly about team events. There is great camaraderie amongst the competitors which flows onto extra-curricular activities and this makes the competition an enjoyable experience. If you would like to become involved in this part of the Club, please contact Craig Chapman. We may not have the best manager in the world (going close to missing some events again), but that’s all part of the experience. If you would like to be the Team Manager and manage Wren’s travel itinerary, then please make yourself known to me. Cheers until next year!
Craig ChapmanMASTERS TEAM MANAGER
Coaching Report This surf sports season should be remembered for the positive gains made by the Club with the development of existing members and the addition of some high caliber new recruits.
Zac Orchard and Leon Zagel continued to shine in the surf. Zac posted many good results in his first year of U17 competition. Having led the field around the wrong can in the State Board Final, he went from near last to finish 5th and showed how much his swimming has improved by placing 6th in the Ironman Final. Leon was a regular swim and board finalist throughout the season. He took out the Open Swim and Board, the Restricted Surf Race and teamed with Zac to win the Open Board Rescue at the Gold Coast City Titles. He also joined Bobby Garrett to finish 3rd in the State Open Rescue Tube Rescue and qualify for the final at Aussies.
Finley Taylor and Jaeden Sasaki displayed great talent in the relatively new 2km Beach Run. Jaeden, an U14 competitor, won the State U15 event while Fin picked up 2nd in the Opens. Both finished in the top 6 at the Australian Titles.
Fin joined Luke Lorenzin and Andrew Worling to take on the Coolangatta Gold. All three guys did the Club proud by finishing the grueling event and surpassing their own expectations. Both Fin and Luke smashed the five hour barrier. It was a great effort and has no doubt inspired other members to have a go in the future.

Both showed their value by representing the Club in
several team finals. Luke’s improvement on the board
and ski were of particular note, culminating in reaching
his first Ocean’s 38 ski final and making the Quarters
of both events at Aussies. Our senior members also
provided a positive contribution to the search for
Saxon Bird. They handled themselves well in a difficult
situation. Our thoughts are with Saxon’s family.
Newcomers Luke Bartlett and Stephanie Ballantine
made a splash. In his first year of competition, Luke
broke through with finals appearances in the Open Belt
and Double Ski and featured in one of two Open Board
Relay teams to make the semi finals at Aussies. Steph’s
swimming prowess saw her named in the National
High Performance Squad. She will be a huge asset to
the Club.
Many of our junior competitors stepped up and their
commitment to training and enthusiasm for racing
contributed to an obvious improvement in skill and
performance. Abbey Short joined Zac and Jaeden in
the Branch Team. She also made the final of the U15
Board at State, finishing 8th as an U13 competitor.
These guys joined Maisie Budinger, Christie Short,
Michaela Henderson, Danny Pointing, Harrison Jones
and Ziggie Zantiotis to qualify for finals of many team
and individual events. They are a promising bunch who
need the continued support of the Club.
BJ Haylock, Aaron Short and Zac Orchard started
from scratch on the ski this season. They teamed up
to represent in U19 Ski Relay and Taplin events. With
consistent effort, they have the potential to do well on
this craft in the future.Trevor Hendy again offered great
advice and experience with his Saturday sessions and
assistance at carnivals. It would be fantastic to see him
back on board!
A fun and productive season was had by all involved
with more competitors, improved performances and
most importantly a great club spirit. Well done everyone!
Zayne Hamill
SENIOR COACH
Beach Team Report The small Surfers Beach team had a reasonable year
at surf carnivals with some solid results at the various
carnivals that were held. The Fastest Man on Sand
series were a revelation and I thought it was absolutely
great to get the senior and junior athletes together at
the same meeting. It built a much closer relationship
between the competitors and supporters.
Matt Peters – Fastest Man on Sand
We started the year training from around June last
year, so it was a long season. Jane Laker and Megan
Crockford led the ladies with guest appearances from
Amber Conroy. They trained hard for the initial parts
of the year but fell a little by the wayside as carnivals
approached. Jane then went to the dark side to dabble
in skis and we wished her well on her competition
change.
With the lads, Matt Peters was a standout in consistency
in training and in results at carnivals. He went up to
the 19’s this year but did find it significantly harder
to compete against more dedicated athletes and the
older age group he was in. He needed to pick up the
consistency at every training session and we are
working on strength improvements with Matt and
Robert to enable a more explosive start.
Max Dempsey was the next best performer in the U15
age group - competing up from the nippers. He was
an absolute delight to be involved with, took copious
amounts of stirring and really improved his sprinting
during the year, from the training with the lads. He is a
star of the future once he gets some bulk about him as
he gets older.
20
Robert Correa had some solid results too once he got back from his lengthy mid season holiday in South America. He is a great athlete who only needs more confidence on the sand and a long stretch without injury to show his talents. Both Robert and Matt will benefit from training together more consistently and really need a few more athletes to work off to improve against.
Max Dempsey & Warren Peters at Freshwater
We are all looking forward to the new season and trying to find some more warm talent who are built for speed.
Warren PetersBEACH COACH
Surfing Team Report It’s been a great year for the surfers and we have had some epic days. One day they were shooting Surf Patrol and we were all out - except the TV guys missed it. Khan was getting tubed with his girlfriend riding on the same board, I’ve never seen anything like it and to add to that, it was our lifesaver paddle boards. Fin was out there ripping on his knees. He’s come a long way in the surf. I remember when he struggled with the paddle boards and now it’s his preferred apparatus.
Training this year was excellent with most participants learning the skills of surfing in competition. We had a structured system that taught strategy and surfing a basic routine that was what the judges were looking for; good start middle and finish.
Teaching simple competition strategies and a few easy routines resulted in Branch and State finals. The surfers
who trained hit the waves ready and set the pace in most divisions. Michaela rode waves from start to finish and kept improving as she progressed through to the finals and finished 2nd in U14. Sam showed composure and her wave selection in a competition situation was the key to her high scoring heats. From starting our beginner surf lessons years ago to making finals and almost winning her U13 division is an amazing feat.
Pat Kelly had a great season and won another State Title. He has all the big moves and is great under pressure, when other competitors are trying to take all the waves from him, he can still move around and find the best waves and perform the biggest moves in the critical part of the wave giving him the highest scores.
Glenn Van Drunen needs to be congratulated on he and Sofie’s new son Louie. Congratulations from everyone.
The Australian Champs saw big, powerful waves. We went to North Kirra and most clubs were happy with the conditions and getting a taxi ride out by jet ski to start the heats was a bonus. Shelto ripped and was close to winning and was our best performer on the day finishing 2nd in the Australian titles for the second year running.
The Cheyne Horan School Of Surf was responsible for all the lead up training and coaching during events. I’d just like to say it was our pleasure and we look forward to next season. Remember to tell friends they get three free lessons if the join the Club. Aloha. Have a good surf and sea you on patrol.

Water Polo - 2010
This season saw a new look team. With many teams finding it hard to get members, we combined some clubs and are now called the ‘Rebel Sharks’. There were six B Grade teams.
It proved to be a good move with one female, a 15 year old lad and all ages up to myself. With Sunday training at the Miami High Pool, most members improved throughout the season to eventually take out the Minor Premiership. We then won the Semi 9 to 4 and went straight into the Grand Final to be beaten by a fast young team 9 to 4. This team, ‘The Apprentices’, were an extremely well drilled team and will probably move up to A Grade next season.
Captain Mark Hart did a great job in pulling the team together and stepped up to the ‘mark’ with his devastating backhand. Former Surfers Paradise member who still assists with patrols, young Jackson Cottle, showed that he will be a force to be reckoned with in the near future. The whole team vowed to back up again next September and it could be our year. New members are always welcome! See you in September,

Sydney 2010
The sixth annual trip to Sydney in January took place with a team of 16 competitors and around 10 supporters. The team competed at three carnivals including the open carnival at Manly, the boardriding at Manly and the Australia Day carnival at Freshwater. Our thanks go to North Narrabeen SLSC for their outstanding hospitality in letting us bunk down there. They also provided their 25 seater bus to us, collecting us from the airport and then leaving it with us to transport the team around. Thank you to Janice, Blackie, Paul and the members of North Narrabeen SLSC.
Jaeden Sasaki, Danny Pointing, Max Dempsey, Ziggie Zantiotis
The team had some great results with some major competition from clubs they would next meet at the Australian Championships. For this reason, this trip is now an integral part of our competition calendar.

ThanksThanks to everyone for your efforts with the upkeep of our equipment this season. Special mention to Grahame Long for his efforts in keeping everything up to scratch and tidying the downstairs storage area. Some of our signs have been bent on a few occasions where the pole attaches to the base element of the sign. When putting the signs in the sand and removing them, please make sure you grasp the sign closer to its base to avoid placing excessive stress on the pole to base element connection (i.e. a reduced bending moment is created since moment = force x distance). During the off-season, we will be looking at fixing a few problems with our gear (especially the sun protection and glare issues with the tower). A new ATV is currently on order and will be ready to go for next season with shade, board racks and a PA system. If you have any ideas, please let us know. We have a large range of new rescue boards. To ensure they are kept in good condition - make sure you don’t drag them along the sand (use two people to carry if necessary) - keep face down or in the board racks whilst on the beach. The sun melts the wax and the glue holding the knee pads down - take care when putting them away in the horizontal racks (use two people if necessary) to prevent the bottom from hitting the concrete and cracking the fibreglass. A re-arrangement of our backyard racks during the off-season should make accessing rescue boards a lot easier than the current set-up. Thanks to David Orchard for repairing our boards throughout the season.
There have been a few problems with the charging of the radios which will be rectified by next season. Please ensure the radios are put correctly into the charger and wait until the charging light comes on. Have fun!

Another season over and we made it in one piece. The first aid room had its wettest season I’m sure. It was quite normal to walk in and be ankle deep in water. We were very happy to receive another defibrillator (secondhand) which was a donation from Circle on Cavill. A thank you must also go out to Nik who was the First Aid Officer at the start of the season but unfortunately had to go back to South Africa. Realising I had big shoes to fill but with the help of Becky Gellel and the Patrol Captains I found my way. We did an amazing job in our First Aid inspections so a big thank you to those that assisted with these!

A mention to Paul Conroy for not only administering first aid but having to receive it, I believe there’s an episode on Surf Patrol if you missed it on the beach. We have now moved all equipment out of the room and look forward to having a new room for the new season. This will hopefully make things easier (and less wet). Hope you all rest up over the off season however please update your award if you need to. Look forward to seeing you all in the next season.

The 2009/10 season was again a very busy one, with SLSQ introducing a new carnival format including the Fastest Man on the Sand and a four round water carnival series between Sunshine Coast Branch, Point Danger Branch and South Coast Branch. This made for a long season culminating in the State Titles at Emu Park in mid April. The start of the season saw 130 nippers sign on over two weekends, with the activities kicking off with a group of 60 attending our annual Tallebudgera three day camp. This camp allowed many to complete their awards, meet our coaches and participate in some great activities like surfing, canoeing, sailing and Element X with Trevor Hendy and his crew. Following this Scott Andrews ran the holiday training camp and ten of our senior nippers completed their Surf Rescue Certificates and became patrolling members. This is very satisfying and as I have said on several occasions, Nippers is the training ground for future lifesavers.
CoachingUnder our head coach Cassandra Sedgman, we have continued to improve at carnivals with some very pleasing results this year from our 30 strong competitor group. Cassandra turns up in rain or in sunshine with a smiling face and is ready with suggestions and support to improve your skills. Cass has been ably supported again this year by Steve Brown. Travis Catchpole and Shannon O’Connor have joined our coaching team in the water and Stu Vial’l and Shona O’Connor have carried out duties on the beach.
My special thanks must go to Shane O’Connor who offered his services to train the nippers moving up on mals for the first time. This grounding in the basic skills of paddling a mal proved to be invaluable.
Our all conquering March Past Team has been continually improving under the direction of Bill and Jason Pointing. Jason Pointing again took up the challenge and trained our three 2 person R&R teams.
Finley Taylor once again offered to train our Champion Lifesavers and Patrol Competition team with amazing
results. Also, my thanks to our senior coach, Zayne Hamill, for his patience with the U14s who joined the many senior training sessions throughout the year.
CompetitionAs I said earlier SLSQ introduced a new format this year, by introducing more one day carnivals. This saw some of the senior nippers attending 17 carnivals during the year. The season commenced with the Tweed River Festival closely followed by the Dolphin Classic. The Coolangatta Gold saw seven U14s step up and compete. We then moved into the four round carnival series at Maroochydore, Met Caloundra, Coolangatta and North Burleigh. We continued to improve at each carnival. In late December we attended the South Pacific Championships at Kirra and our first Pool Rescue competition. Our March Past team came away with first place and the honour of being the South Pacific Title holders. We performed well in the pool with several firsts in individual and team events.
The Club again entered the South Coast Branch Surf Rescue Champs at Broadbeach in January and proved to be the Club to beat with medals in U14, U13 and U12 age groups. Our U14s of Danny Pointing, Ziggie Zantiotis, Michaela Henderson and Harrison Jones won the U14 Patrol Competition and went onto to compete in the U15 State competition coming 5th. Danny also came second in U14 State Champion Lifesaver.
After a short Christmas break we were back into it and took a group of U14s to Sydney over the Australia Day weekend to compete in the Manly and Freshwater Carnivals. We stayed at North Narrabeen SLSC for five days and had a tremendous time.Branch Champs were held in February and rough seas saw the cancellation of several events which meant we were required to attend the Gold Coast City Titles to complete our State qualifying.
Several of the U14s stepped up to compete with the seniors in the U15s at Oceans 38 followed by the Senior State Champs at Kurrawa. Jaeden Sasaki, Danny, Ziggie,

Max Dempsey, Michaela and Harrison were selected by the Club to compete at the Australian Champs at Kurrawa. This proved to be a tough competition in testing conditions and resulted in the cancellation of the carnival following the tragic death of Saxon Bird. Our Juniors represented the Club at the ecumenical service held on the beach on the Sunday to give them some closure.
The beachies were not left out with a four round Fastest Man on Sand competition for them. Well done to Max and Amber Conroy for performing well at these carnivals.
Our season ended with a group of 40 nippers and parents travelling by bus to Emu Park for the State Titles. The Club performed well above expectations with many of the group making finals and finishing in the top ten. Congratulations to Christie Short for bronze in the U13 Board and bronze to our March Past team. Also congratulations must go to Christie Short and Jaeden for being selected in the South Coast Branch Team earlier in the season.
Thanks to our Age Managers, Jason, Brett, Debbie, Sarah, Anne and Lisa. Without you it would be impossible to get the nippers on the beach each Sunday. It is important that we recognise all competitors that have put the effort into training every week for the past eight months. Kilometers in the pool and hours in the surf and on the beach. To all of you, well done! Thank you for your commitment.
Sponsorship
All of this could not be done without the support of our sponsors. Once again Junipers came on board with the help of Grocon Constructions. Our thanks must go to the Junipers marketing staff for their assistance again during the year.
Rush Surf Wear, IYC Travel and Guaranteed Tiling also
provided sponsorship for the season providing uniforms, officials hats and State uniforms for our Nippers.
We were also lucky enough to secure a new sponsor with McDonald’s on Cavill coming on board and sponsoring our State team uniform. Thank you Tania.
I trust all our sponsors will be able to assist again next season because without these companies we are unable to carry out the great work we do in training out future nippers.
Season Highlights
There have been many highlights this season. The trip to Japan with 20 other members in the off season to visit our sister club Kaike. I am sure it is something that Danny Pointing, Ziggie Zantiotis and Harrison Jones will never forget.
The trip to Sydney in January for the Manly and Freshwater carnivals and all the Club trips away to compete at carnivals at Mooloolaba, Maroochydore, Dicky Beach and Met Caloundra.
The bus trip to Emu Park, the eco resort, the cave tour, the last night around the camp fire and the fun times with your mates.
I think the main highlights were the rescues performed by our young nippers, some of which made the paper. Emily, Danny, Harrison, Christie and Abbey and all those others who also carried out rescues have made me proud to be a member of this great Club and to know I have in some small way contributed to this.
Finally
To the Senior Management Committee and especially to our Admin Manager Mandy; thanks for your support and assistance during the season and over the last two years.
32
I must thank the outgoing Committee Shane, Maree, Megan, Debbie Schofield and Debbie Hibbard, Jenny, Leanne and Mark for their assistance during the year.
To the parents who commit the time to bring their nippers to training weekly, to nippers on Sunday and to all the carnivals, you need a special pat on the back.
Finally I big thank to all the nippers for providing me with a lot of joy and satisfaction over the past two years.

A team of nippers, juniors, seniors and supporters visited Kaike in July 2009. Warren and Matt Peters, Stuart Vial’l, Shane and Andrew Laker, Megan Crockford, Rebecca Gellel, Alister Cran, Zac Orchard and Mandy Hurst, Danny, Raewyn and Harrison Jones, Robyn and Danny Pointing and Jennifer Demeral and Ziggie Zantiotis headed off from the Gold Coast.
Our sister club hosted a wonderful tour and made sure the trip was a fantastic experience for those returning a second time and those making their first visit. The team flew into Osaka and spent a night there and then traveled to Hiroshima. A beautiful town with so much history and everyone enjoyed the visit to the Peace Park.
Once in Yonago City, the team met with the Governor and was officially welcomed. This was a huge honour. The short Kaike patrol season commenced with a wonderful opening ceremony including a blessing. It was great to be a part of this. An official dinner was held to mark the 10th Anniversary of the Kaike LSC, highlights being President Warren Peters speech in Japanese and the gift of yukatas to the ladies on tour. This was a very special evening and friendships were made and renewed.
Of course no visit is complete without visits to the hot springs which are famous in this part of the country. The team was fortunate to be accommodated in a hotel where the baths and spas are a specialty. A couple of evenings of karaoke were fun. The seven younger ones on the tour enjoyed homestay for two nights and we especially thank the families who hosted them. They really enjoyed the experience.
The team sadly said goodbye to their friends and headed back to Osaka for an evening. Some visited Universal Studios and the castle. Everyone made it home safely, one a little ill (a bit scary at the time) and some learned never to say “what else could possibly go wrong”. When
traveling with a Laker, check your tickets and passports and make sure your self-contained bathrooms are fireworks resistant.
The next visit by our Club to Kaike will take place in July 2011. Kaike visited us in 2010, late February, early March. It was a very quick visit but we managed to do a lot.
The team was headed up by President Isao Nojima and Vice President Yoshiharu Takatsu with Yoko Fukuda, Tamotsu Kuchita, Dr Naoki Sato, Satoshi Yabusawa, Hironori Omoso, Nozomi Itai, Hisae Nojima, Ayaka Sato and Honatsu Sato. The younger girls enjoyed homestay for one evening. Sincere thanks to the families who hosted them – the Peters, Vial’ls and Pointings.
Ikuno Fox joined the tour as interpreter with her husband Marvin baby daughter Arisa. They were heading back to live in Yonago after this trip. A special thanks to Ikuno for her help during the last few tours.
The team was taken out on the Broadwater one evening and even the wet weather didn’t dampen their enthusiasm. Training with Scotty and the bronzies, training with Trevor and Zayne, a visit to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and a couple of visits to the Club to catch up with members.
It is important for both parties that these visits continue and we will be looking at ways to include more training and education as part of the itinerary on our next visit. The possibility of assisting our Kaike counterparts gain their Australian Bronze Medallion and other awards is being explored.
Our thanks go to President Isao Nojima and the members of Kaike Life Saving Club for their friendship over the past ten years.

Fellow Members, well what a year it has been with the impact the GFC has had not only on the Global Economy but certainly the Australian and more importantly locally. The local tourism occupancy rates took a hammering and of course that translated in to very tough trading times for the Club as more businesses touted for the tourist dollar.
Once again the Supporters Club has worked away behind the scenes taking the pressure off the Surf Club by paying for things like patrol meals, electricity, cleaning, etc. and of course commercial bill loan repayments and supplying the beverage for the Sportsman’s Lunch, Annual Dinner, Life Members & Walsh Fellows Dinner and many other things during the year.
In last year’s Supporters Club report [how time flies] I mentioned the planning for the upstairs area and the process required to gain approval of the plans from the Surf Club membership at a Special General Meeting. There has been an enormous amount of work carried out to this end and I must thank Danny Jones in particular for his outstanding input. At the January Special General Meeting an almost unanimous vote by the large number of members present approved the plans and authorised the Surf Club Committee to borrow up to $400,000 ($50,000 more than requested) so as to include some renovations of the downstairs area.
It is important that the face we present to the ‘foot traffic’ going past the Club is a positive one and with ‘Soul’ about to open with all new food venues and the ‘Chateau’ already reaping the rewards of their renovation it is more important than ever that our renovations take place as soon as possible without any stalling or delay.
Once again our “Award Winning Caterers” Vicki and Steve Oliver and their staff have shown their professionalism with the gaining of more industry accolades since my last report. They are great
supporters of both Clubs and really have become a part of the fabric of our organisation.
I cannot overlook the contribution of our staff and as we all know dealing with the public is no easy matter (some of our members are included in this comment) and we thank them for their efforts. The support of Nerang RSL and particularly President Terry McDonald and GM Andrew McInnes has been outstanding over the past years and this year was no exception. They showed support once again for our ‘Melbas’ lunch and also the “Ultimate Lifesaving Lunch” at which the Club purchased tables and contributed to the success of our auction in a big way.
Unfortunately I am unable to report on the “success of our renovated club” as I wanted to in the closing paragraph of last year’s report as we haven’t got to second base yet, but it needs to be a priority if we want to survive, it really is that important and critical to the future of this iconic Surf Club. Please take every opportunity to support the bar and bistro so we can continue to support the Surf Club.

The Building Committee started the year with many projects listed for viewing. The upstairs renovation was one of the main projects and was voted on by the members at a Special General Meeting with approval to move ahead on completion of some documents to be submitted for the final go ahead. Some of these documents are still outstanding and the project cannot move ahead until these have been completed.
There was an original plan to renovate the upstairs male change rooms and to add new female change rooms next door to the male change rooms. This project was at go ahead when we were notified by GCCC and Centro they were putting a Master Plan together that would remove our gym area and a full redevelopment of the north side of our Club and rear of Club area combined with the Foreshore Development. Once shown these plans and attending many meeting between all parties it was decided to wait until confirmed plans were in place before we went and spend considerable amounts of money on an area that could be demolished within a few years. We have now seen these plans (available on our website) showing what Centro and GCCC are proposing to do. Included in this is the removal of the walk way and renovations in front of the Club on both sides of the road. We are waiting on a meeting to be held to give us a better understanding of timeframes for these works to be done.
The Building Committee recommended repainting the outside of the Club and interior to bring it up to a better standard as all other establishments within our area are doing the same. The exterior painting has since been passed by the Management Committee. Even if there is large redevelopment to happen around the Club in the near future we still need to present ourselves as a clean and professional establishment to continue to draw customers.
At present GCCC has advised of the removal of our first aid room when the overpass is demolished. They will be building a new one to replace this. This may not
be ready for the new patrol season but we will have a substitute while we wait for this.
We have received quotes to renovate the back of the Club for new board and ski racks as our membership and competitor numbers grow and we need to offer a safe and secure place for them to leave their and the Club’s equipment.
Looking forward to next year you should see some considerable changes in and around the Club and these may sometimes cause some disruptions. We ask you to understand this is all to benefit the Club so we can continue to grow and be financial into the future.
