our mission Great River Educational Arts Theatre (GREAT) creates meaningful experiences for artists and audiences of all ages.

message from the directorDiscrimination and social injustice are nothing new in American life, and like most Americans, I’ve been shocked by the recent news of brutality in some of our nation’s most segregated communities. The more intractable these issues seem to be, the more we need art to help us talk about and overcome them. Based on E. L. Doctorow’s 1975 novel by the same name, Ragtime uses song to weave together stories of early twentieth-century New York from three very different perspectives–African Americans in Harlem, immigrants from Eastern Europe, and upper-class suburban whites. As traditional and social norms conflict with each other, these characters search for stability and justice, trying to find peace amongst the chaos. Taking on these themes has allowed the opportunity for reflection and heartfelt discussions regarding our own community for our cast and production team. This has made the rehearsal process even more pertinent for everyone involved. Although Ragtime addresses societal changes during the early 1900’s, it also reflects life as we know it today. We hope we leave you with a lasting impression and continue to spark reflection and discussion in your daily life.--Rick Cicharz, Director of Ragtime

20 MINUTE INTERMISSION

Ragtime is based on E.L. Doctorow’s novel, which was voted by Time Magazine as among the Top 100 Best Novels of the last century, and takes place at the turn of the 20th century in New York. It tells the powerful tale of a white, upper-middle class family, an African American couple, and an Eastern European immigrant escaping to America with his daughter, as they all confront the timeless contradictions of wealth, poverty, freedom, prejudice, hope, and despair in pursuit of the American Dream.

This past summer over 1,800 kids enjoyed starring on stage in a GREAT Summer Theatre Camp. Our goal is to make it the “most fun they’ll have indoors all summer” but parents also like that it is a safe, rewarding environment for youth to build life skills through stage skills. We are proud to partner with local community education departments to bring the drama to a school near you each summer. This was our fifth year producing a summer camp in partnership with Melrose Community Education.

“Hosting a summer theatre camp with Great Theatre has been a win-win for our area families and for Community Education. We held our first camp in August of 2011 and just finished our 5th year. In the spring we choose dates for our location and Great Theatre takes care of all of the details! I feel like I blink my eyes and everything is planned and ready to go. Registration is done through their website, but we like to help promote the camp in our Summer Recreation brochure as well.

It’s so nice to have an experienced staff come into our facility and offer an extraordinary experience for our youth. Parents love it too, because they don’t have to drive miles and miles! I’m so grateful for this partnership and hope it continues for years!”

Stacey Austing-Jacobson, Community Education Director - Melrose Public Schools

Thanks to these generous individuals and businesses who pledged during the silent phase of GREAT Theatre’s Setting the Stage Capital Cam-paign and got us to the million dollar mark! Pledges as of 9/1/15

is this your first time experiencing the wonder of live theatre? here is what you can expect - in addition to an amazing performance!

When the performance is about to begin, the lights will dim. This is a signal for the audience to put aside concerns and conversation and settle quietly into the world of live theater.

Feel free to applaud and laugh at appropriate times, such as after a joke or after a scene or song. The actors thrive off of the audience’s energy, so please react to the performance!

Leaving during a performance is extremely disruptive to those around you and the actors on stage. Please take care of all bathroom and other outside concerns before the show begins or during intermission.

Be courteous and show respect to your fellow theater patrons by removing a crying or disruptive child.

Recording or photography of any kind is prohibited. Live theater is not meant to be reproduced; it is meant to be experienced.

We kindly remind you to turn off your cell phone and all other electronic devices. That being said, we love when you share your thoughts on GREAT Theatre’s Twitter and Facebook pages, but please wait until after the show to do so.

Talking, whispering, humming, or singing along during the performance is distracting to those around you and to the actors on stage.

Please wait to leave until the actors have finished their bows. This is an important time to applaud the actors and crew for putting on a spectacular performance.

You are welcome to meet the cast after the performance is over in the theater lobby. They love to meet, take photos with, and sign autographs for anyone and everyone!

season volunteers

SUPPORT GREAT THEATRE BY VOLUNTEERING! GREAT was founded in 1998 by a team of volunteers and their power is still evident by the 55,000+ hours that were donated last year. Each one of those hours furthered our mission of creating meaningful experiences for artists and audiences of all ages. With our staff now under one roof at our new Volunteer & Education Center in Waite Park, the opportunity to be a season volunteer is even GREATer. Come discover how you can use (or expand!) your skillset, meet our staff, socialize with other volunteers, enjoy some treats, learn about exciting opportunities for you and your family, and of course… tour our new home.

These volunteers have committed to help us with every production throughout the year. For each of them, the amount of time and reason they contribute varies, but what doesn’t waiver is their commitment to GREAT Theatre and their consistent involvement throughout the entire season.
