The Belelnut Café stays open until 7.30pm on performance nights for pre theatre refreshments. Our theatre bar is open for pre-show drinks from 7.30pm and interval drinks may be pre-ordered at the theatre bar before the show. Patrons may also enjoy a drink after the show. Please note, consumption of food is not permitted in either theatre space.

This autumn sees a jam packed season for Draíocht audiences. Theatre, dance, music and comedy are all here, inviting you to spend some time with us over the next few months.

We are delighted to bring you a strong line up of theatre this season, including Days of Wine and Roses directed by the acclaimed Conall Morrison and on a lighter note, the brilliant and funny Waiting for IKEA. Draíocht is thrilled to be taking part in this year’s Ulster Bank Dublin Theatre Festival’s ‘Theatre Where You Live’ Season by presenting the Nomad Theatre Network’s production of Pat McCabe’s The Dead School, in association with Livin’ Dred Theatre Company. In Draíocht for just 4 nights, book early to make sure you get to see this fantastic production.

Productions from local groups include ‘Rebecca’ from Coolmine Drama Circle and ‘Mad About Musicals’ from Coolmine Musical Society, both Draíocht favoutites. Our music line up includes Brian Kennedy who played to a packed house last time he was with us, the legendary Sonny Condell and a talented musical duo called Size Two Shoes. We’re delighted to bring you Honor Heffernan this season

as well as the beautiful sounds of Ishna. Ballet Ireland and Independent Ballet Wales will enthral us with their presentations of both new and well loved ballets.

Our Visual Arts programme continues in the autumn with Jaki Irivine’s City of Women. A co-commission between Draíocht and Dublin County Council, this promises to be an exciting and provocative exhibition. Amharc Fhine Gall VI, an important annual event celebrating the best of art in Fingal, also takes place. New works by the highly regarded Colin Martin take us to the end of the year.

Our Children & Youth Arts programme is full steam ahead with a schedule that ranges from Gamelan music workshops to ARTstronomy, workshops celebrating 2009 as the Year of Astronomy, to our Virtual Production programme for transition year students. And watch out for all those elf making workshops ... they book up quickly so book your place early. Robert ran away with Barbie, a step aerobic instructor from the local community centre. Resigned to a single life, Lorraine hopes her future will improve considerably when she meets Chitty, a single self made chip shop owner with plans for expansion. However when Chitty discloses a long buried secret to Lorraine, her world appears set to come crashing down once again.

Donal and Mona leave 60’s Belfast, full of youthful hope, for a new start in London. Strangers in an unfamiliar city they fall in love with life, each other and booze. An exciting whirlwind of discovery begins to spiral out of control as the bottle takes its grip. A breathtaking two hour musical extravaganza of classic songs from the Motown era, performed by ‘The Jewelettes – Motown Big Band’, a 10-piece band including 3 top class female vocalists, a full brass section, bass, drums, guitar, keyboards, percussion and fantastic backing vocals. Expect to hear hits from Diana Ross, Martha & The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, The Jackson 5 and many more. A wonderful stage set and spectacular lighting effects and visuals including costume changes and artist dedications are also features of this magnificent showcase to the history of Motown music.

Raphael Bell, an old style national school teacher, whose life is haunted by images and memories from his past, has devoted his life to upholding all that is traditional, pure and wholesome in the Ireland of Eucharist Congresses. On the other side stands Malachy Dugeon, a first-year teacher and one of the new breed about town, where rock music and American movies are king and rules are made to be broken. When these two men come together, chaos is only round the corner. The Dead School is an explosion - it is the Ireland of the 70s crashing headlong into that of the 30s. Full of restless movement, dark humour and intense choreographed chaos, it’s a rollercoaster of emotion from start to finish. Stone Motion return to Draíocht for a special charity gig for the RNLI, the charity that saves lives at sea. The RNLI provides on call 24 hour lifeboat search and rescue services around the coast of Ireland and the UK. The volunteer lifeboat crew members are trained to the highest standards and often put their own lives at risk saving others in challenging and sometimes dangerous conditions. Join Stone Motion and special guests for a great night to support this worthy cause. All proceeds from the gig will directly support the RNLI.

Size2shoes are Limerick brothers Eoin and Moley Ó Suilleabhain, two cool dudes with some great songs and obvious talent the style of which is not really around at the moment in Ireland. They write tunes that are about real stuff with some fresh lyrics, in a non-preachy way. They have performed with Choice Music Prizewinner Julie Feeney, Eurovision dude Brian Kennedy, Classical violinist ultra dude Nigel Kennedy, and Hollywood actor Russell Crowe, who was a big fan of the two lads when they performed and jammed together.

Eric and Andrew are two of the busiest comics on the club circuit in Ireland’s booming stand up scene. Between them last year they performed over 500 shows and supported many of Ireland’s top acts on their theatre tours. The lads decided they wanted to have some more time on stage making nice people laugh and they have hit the road to bring a taste of the stand-up club circuit to the theatres of Ireland, stopping off in Draíocht along the way. What happens when the Classical world and the Irish traditional world collide on a rock and roll tour bus? The answer is: Ishna. The brainchild of violinist Tara Novak and tenor Ciaran Nagle, Ishna is Celtic Rock taken to an entirely new and different level, fusing the passion and musical line of the classical genre with the honesty and depth of Irish traditional music and the drive of today’s hottest grooves. Featuring original compositions by Tara Novak, as well as fantastic re-arrangements of Scarborough Fair, The Water is Wide, Charlie Chaplin’s Smile and many more.

In a musical career spanning 35 years, from the heady days with ‘Tír na nÓg’, to the truly fantastic ‘Scullion’, numerous solo albums, to his current incarnation with the band ‘Radar’, Sonny Condell is perhaps one of Ireland’s greatest songwriters with 15 albums to his credit. Sonny’s songs are melodic and thoughtful, often with a breeze of jazz or a rhythmic hint of traditional music. During the 3 years of the American-Mexican war (1846-48) some 3000 immigrant soldiers deserted the American Army. More than 500 of them, mainly Irish, joined the Mexican side where, led by John Riley from Clifden, Co. Galway, they fought as The San Patricios Battalion (Saint Patrick’s Battalion). Virtually unknown in Ireland and effectively airbrushed from American history, the San Patricios are revered by Mexicans as heroes and martyrs. Narrated by a fictional character, Tomas O’Byrne from Tallaght, Co Dublin, this play tells their story. Starring award winning actor/writer/producer Stephen Jones.

Dangerously Dark.An evening of theatrical song and historical reminiscences presented by chanteuse Stella Bass and band, under the musical direction of Peter Roycroft. Together they fashion an entertaining musical tribute to the inter-war Berlin cabaret in a Germany teetering on the brink of political turmoil; having survived the austerity of WWI, an all-too-brief golden age of music, cabaret and satire emerged, whose exponents included Marlene Dietrich, Kurt Weill and Friedrich Hollaender. Their trademark songs - including Lili Marlene, Mack The Knife and Falling In Love Again - are known and loved around the world, having thankfully outlived the demise of cabaret culture following Nazi accession to power in 1933.

Amharc Fhine Gall VI

Over the last two years the artists Brian Maguire and Michael McLoughlin have facilitated weekly workshops with a core group of 30 residents of Ashleigh House, a residential centre for women in recovery from drugs and alcohol, operated by Coolmine Therapeutic Community, Dublin 15. The resulting collaborative body of work lets the viewer into a world where elements of addiction and recovery co-exist. The exhibition features the participant’s artwork, Maguire’s portraits of some of the women and McLoughlin’s audio and video work.

Brian Maguire is a renowned Irish based artist who exhibits widely throughout Europe and the Americas. He is currently Professor of Fine Art and Head of the Faculty of Fine Art at the National College of Art and Design, Dublin.

Michael McLoughlin is a Dublin based artist. He has previously exhibited at Limerick City Gallery of Art, Limerick, Triskel Art Centre and as part of audio art radio events such as AART, IMMA (1995) and Resonant Cities, Glasgow (2004).

Following the success of last years Amharc Fhine Gall graduate exhibition, All in the Detail, which featured young local talent Deirdre Byrne, Logan McClain, Lorna Fitzsimons, Jennifer Phelan and Tracy Hanna, Draíocht and Fingal Arts Office are continuing their commitment to young local artists by offering a further opportunity to show their work in a significant contemporary space. This year we have extended the opportunity to include a criticism prize. The selected artist(s) will work with a young emerging art critic. In 2008 Draíocht and The LAB invited Jaki Irvine to think about Hogarth’s 1732 series of prints, ‘The Harlot’s Progress’. Irvine developed ‘City of Women’ in response to this invitation. The piece was shot on Foley Street where women of many different ages and backgrounds, including Macushla Dance Group, the young women of Sheriff Street, and many more, came together for one night to help this project happen. Draíocht is delighted to present City of Women in 2009 before it moves to the LAB, Foley Street in January 2010. Jaki Irvine is one of Ireland’s most respected contemporary artists. She was born in Ireland in 1966, and while she has lived in both the UK and Italy for extended periods she now lives and works in Dublin. “Irvine’s art has to do with the acknowledgment of strangeness. How odd other people are … How everything seems coherent, and then suddenly falls apart. Irvine … explores not only the extremes of passion … but also the mundane and the everyday… where people’s paths cross, and encounters are missed”. (Michael Newman,

‘Chalet Town’ is a new sequence of paintings by Colin Martin and is based upon research undertaken by the artist in Europe and America. This series utilizes the vernacular environment of a dormitory holiday town to create a narrative context, in which the identity, values and states of mind that underpin and form communal space are explored.Colin Martin graduated from DIT in 1994 and is currently completing his MFA in NCAD. He has held solo exhibitions at Temple Bar Gallery 1999, West Cork Arts Centre, Ashford Gallery RHA 2006 and the Fenton Gallery 2009. Recent Group exhibitions include ’Camera Obscura’, Light house Cinema 2009, ‘Thirty Thousand Years Later’ Pallas Contemporary Projects and ’Returning’ Highlanes Gallery. Recent Awards include The Arts Council Bursary 2007 /2004, Thomas Dammann Award 2008, Hennessy Craig Scholarship 2004 and Golden Fleece Merit Award 2004.

For the first time Draíocht is offering a course in knitting. This fun and creative course is aimed at complete beginners and those we have dabbled with knitting before. Classes will begin with the basics of this creative craft, building up students’ skills to create their own knitted pieces from scratch. Participants will have to provide their own materials, details of which will be provided at time of booking. This course will be taught by Amie Lawless.

Following on from the success of Draíocht’s first series of Portrait drawing classes earlier in this year, we are delighted to welcome back Alan Daly for another series of classes aimed at developing previous students skills as well as introducing those already familiar with different art forms to the practice. This course will focus on drawing from a model, working in different media, mainly charcoal, ink, pencil and some painting. This course will also include how to build up a drawing around a portrait, in devising and setting backdrops using cloth, furniture and objects.

Noel Brennan was educated at The National College of Art and Design in Dublin and graduated in 2002. His practice is interdisciplinary with particular emphasis on institutional critique and architectural interventions. In many of his works and projects there are references to canonical moments in the history of Art. These citations are usually fused with contemporary modes of practice and display. The tenuous familiarity this creates foregrounds the perceptual experience and the viewing context.

A selection of his exhibitions include; Is Mise Ireland, 411 Gallery (China) 2008, The Space in Between, The Basement Gallery (IRL) 2008, Some Kinda Monster, The Galway Arts Centre (IRL) 2007, They are doing something on us behind the fog, Draíocht (IRL) 2006, The Devil in Miss Jones, Meals and SUVs (UK) 2006 and Warsaw, Goethe Institut (IRL) 2005. He is currently working on a new project with The Highlanes Gallery, Drogheda, which will open to the public in January 2010.

Once again transition year students from Hartstown Community School will explore the world of theatre with us by attending key productions at Draíocht to develop their critical eye and by creating a Virtual Production of their own. Each student will get the opportunity to take on the role of one of the many people it takes to produce a show - they’ll manage a budget, create a schedule, design sets and costumes, rehearse scenes and also get to meet directors, actors and producers. By picking their own play to virtually produce, they will experience first hand the hard work that goes into producing a piece of theatre that audiences would virtually love to see.

Gamelan consists of gongs, metallophones, wind and string instruments as well as vocals and is one of the few musical genres in the world where one workshop is sufficient to come away having learned to play a piece of music as a group. Making music is one of the best ways of embracing new cultures in a fun environment, with the added bonus of improving rhythm and general musicality.
