It is a natural progression for WHRO to now offer adult education and help Virginians learn skills they need to obtain jobs and advance in their careers.

In case you missed news of the Governor’s recent announcement, WHRO is pleased to introduce our new workforce development initiative, SkillsOnline. In partnership with local community colleges, workforce invest-ment boards, the chambers of commerce, and employers, SkillsOnline offers nearly 3,500 courses in 19 industries including healthcare, finance, computer technology, construction, legal, and many more. Browse our new www.SkillsOnline.org website and sign up for courses to learn skills for a new job or to advance in your career. Courses are affordable and can be taken anywhere you have an Internet connection.

SkillsOnline is a natural extension of the work we’ve been doing with the public schools since our founding in 1961. We’ve been helping educate Virginia’s children for 52 years, and now we are able to help adults learn skills and get certifications for greater workplace opportunities.

So enjoy Downton Abbey, perhaps take an online course, and celebrate the beginning of a new year. A special thanks to every-one that made a gift of support during our December TV and radio membership drives. You make all of this possible.

ne look at this month’s cover and you know that January brings us the newest season of Downton

Abbey. The highest-rated drama in the history of PBS, Downton Abbey has been at the center of a significant change in our viewership. While we’re always happy to have good ratings, you know that we care more about meeting the needs of our view-ers and listeners than simply competing for the most eyes and ears.

What Downton Abbey has really done is to bring back viewers to WHRO and introduce public television to a new generation of viewers that grew up with hundreds of TV viewing options. By bringing these viewers back to WHRO, not only are they watching a great British drama, viewers are finding a whole wealth of programs that are now regularly viewed by a larger audience.

PBS is now the fifth most-watched TV choice, after the four major broadcasters. This isn’t only due to Downton Abbey viewership. Almost every hour of our primetime schedule is up from a year ago. More people in Hampton Roads are aware of our programming and are finding shows that add to the quality of their lives.

Just look at this month’s schedule. Shows like NOVA, Masterpiece, and Nature return with new episodes that inform us about the world, and new programs like Masterpiece Mystery’s Granchester and A Chef’s Life to entertain and amuse us.

WHRO’s core mission is to educate as well as entertain. Being owned by 19 local school divisions, we have always played a key role in helping educators and students, through our online high school courses, eMediaVA, teacher professional develop-ment workshops, and many other services.

or so many of us, at last the wait is over. The flagship PBS drama series, Downton Abbey, returns for its fifth

season, starting Sunday, January 4 through March 1, 2015 on WHRO TV 15. With each season, PBS has increased the number of fans who enjoy this dramatic saga set in the rapidly changing rural countryside of early-20th century England. We’ve come a long way from Edwardian England through World War I, and as we enter the roaring twenties, there is more change yet to come. Downton is now the highest-rated drama in PBS history, and PBS itself is the fifth most watched network on television. Season 5 won’t disappoint you. Downton’s beloved cast returns to reprise their roles so adored by fans, and they are joined by guest stars Harriet Walter (Atonement), reprising her role as Lady Shackleton, and Peter Egan (Death at a Funeral), who returns as Lord

Flintshire, together with completely new characters played by Richard E. Grant (Girls), Anna Chancellor (The Hour), and Rade Sherbedgia (24). Sewn into the fabric of every season of Downton Abbey is a theme of change, from the wrenching consequences of the Titanic disaster in Season 1 to a notorious automobile accident at the end of Season 3. More intrigue plays out with World War I, women’s rights, and the new morals, inventions, and fashions of the 1920s.

This is where Season 5 kicks off. The first episode is set in 1924. The United Kingdom has its first Labor Party prime minister. The radio is the latest miracle of the age, and Downton’s traditional ways are being besieged on every front, as evidenced by this exchange between the head housekeeper, the steadfast Mrs. Hughes,

and the stern but loving butler, Mr. Carson.“We’re catching up, Mr. Carson. Whether you like it or not, Downton is catching up with the times we live in,” says the forward-thinking Mrs. Hughes.

“That’s exactly what I’m afraid of!” Carson retorts grumpily.

After a long wait, the new season is finally here. Enjoy!

For most, a trip to France includes fine food, local wines, beautiful cities and celebrated culture of all kinds. This is a trip of a different sort altogether, featuring the unexpected flora and fauna of the country, both great and small. Journeying from the Pyrenees to the Alps, all around the mainland and farther on to Corsica, it is the story of the wild side of France. Breathtaking photography reveals wolves, wild boars and even bears living among France’s many mountains, valleys and forests.

On July 4, 2012, scientists at the giant atom smashing facility at CERN announced the discovery of a subatomic particle that seems like a tantalizingly close match to the elusive Higgs Boson, thought to be responsible for giving all the stuff in the universe its mass. Now CERN’s scientists are preparing for the Large Hadron Collider’s second act, when they restart the history-making collider, running at higher energy — hoping for the next great discovery that will change what we know about the particles and forces that make up our universe.

Always a viewer favorite, PBS continues the cherished tradition of ringing in the New Year at the opulent Musikverein with the Vienna Philharmonic under the baton of guest conductor Zubin Mehta, and featuring everyone’s favorite Strauss Family waltzes accompanied by the beautiful dancing of the Vienna City Ballet. In addition to the Musikverein concert setting, the broadcast features picturesque Vienna landmarks. Stage and screen legend Julie Andrews returns as host.

In the heart of the Antarctic Peninsula there’s a post office surrounded by jaw-dropping scenery and 3,000 gentoo penguins. Every summer the penguins return from their fishing grounds to their breeding grounds, trek nearly two miles across sea ice and snow, rush to find a partner, build a nest, lay eggs and protect them from predators, and finally get down to the task of raising their young. Watch their four-month drama unfold as cruise ships come and go, bringing tourists to buy postcards and photograph penguins – the backdrop to the penguins’ lives.

James Norton (Belle) stars as Sidney Chambers, a young and charismatic vicar who turns amateur investigator when one of his parishioners dies under suspicious circumstances. Chambers turns to gruff, down-to-earth police inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green, Reckless) for help, and the two become crime-solving partners and friends in the hamlet of Grantchester.

Wednesday, January 28, 9:00-10:00 pm

Sinkholes are a growing worldwide hazard that lurk wherever limestone and other water-soluble rocks underpin the soil. Sinkholes have swallowed highways, apartment buildings, horses, camels, even golfers, with monster-size holes cracking the earth from Siberia to Louisiana. With compelling eyewitness video of dramatic collapses, and following scientists as they explore the underlying forces behind these natural disasters, NOVA travels the globe to investigate what it’s like to have your world vanish beneath your feet.

Vocal Sound of Jazz moves to 10 pm Saturdays, and Juke in the Back will air at 11 pm on WHRV 89.5 FM. For many years now, host and producer Jack Frieden has brought his Vocal Sound of Jazz to WHRV Saturday evenings at 11 pm. We are pleased to announce that the show is mov-ing to 10 pm, as part of a few programming changes beginning in January. In addition, we’re also delighted to bring you something new in its place at 11 pm!

In the summer of 2014 our popular R&B Chronicles, hosted by Jae Sinnett, took a well-deserved summer break. We replaced the program with something new, Juke in the Back, hosted by Matt The Cat Baldassari. The response we received from listeners was extremely positive, and with VSOJ moving to 10 pm, we are delighted to have found a spot for Juke in the Back at 11 pm on Saturday evenings starting in January. We hope you’ll enjoy our new Saturday evening music line-up, from The Fish Fry with Neal Murray, to VSOJ, and Juke in the Back, and finally, Blues Before Sunrise.

Starting in January 2015 on WHRV 89.5 FM

Capitol Steps New YearsJanuary 1, NoonSay good-bye and good riddance to 2014 with the Capitol Steps and their annual year-end review. It’s all in their hour-long comedy special of Politics Takes a Holiday! This year will feature all-new awards, such as: Is that guy jumping the White House fence or is he just really into Michelle’s ‘Get Moving’ campaign? You say ISIS, I say ISIL. Let’s call the whole thing off. And of course, I scream, you scream, we all scream EBOLA!

Tune in to WHRO 90.3 FM to Hear Music of the World’s Greatest Composers, Jan. 13Well-known composers whom we lost too early include Mozart, Schubert and Gershwin. Another short-lived composer we tend to overlook is the Russian Vassily Sergeyevich Kalinnikov. He was born on January 13, 1866 and died of tuberculosis two days short of his 35th birthday. Befriended by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff, he composed music that, like theirs, is very Russian. Join us on his birthday as we celebrate his all-too-small but very engaging musical work.

In his short life, Mozart composed an enormous amount of music, in several genres. More amazing than the number of works is their quality. His genius was such that we would remember him as a great composer had he written only operas, or only symphonies, or just concertos, or merely chamber music. Throughout the final week of this, his birthday month, we’ll sample that wealth of marvelous music by “immortal Mozart” (as Schubert described him), truly one of the world’s greatest composers.

1. Go to local shows! See bands you love, see bands you’ve never heard of. Your attendance alone helps make that show just a little more awesome.

2. Help promote local shows. If there’s a show you’re amped about, talk it up... make a flyer yourself, or post it on your Facebook wall — every little bit helps!

3. Buy merchandise at the show! Buy something and you get to take a little piece of the show home with you!

4. Attend local music festivals. There’s no better way to get to know your area than to go to a festival there.

5. Throw a house show! Talk to a band or musician you like, find a date that works for them, clear it with your neighbors, invite a manageable number of your friends to your house, pass the hat and have a great time.

6. Support SPIN (Street Performing in Norfolk) events, and any local buskers you see around town. Those open guitar cases aren’t JUST for coins and bills! They’re also an opening for you to express your enthusiasm for the talent you’re witnessing.

7. Tell the venues you love why you love them. If shows are not well attended and we don’t tell the venues how much we appreciate their musical offerings, they may decide to stop offering music altogether.

8. Listen to 89.5/WHRV. Great music programs are offered on WHRV. Out of the Box with Paul Shugrue and The Acoustic Highway with Barry Graham are locally produced shows that do a great job of playing eclectic music from local and national acts.

9. Check out open mics and listening rooms. It’s important to pay attention to the quiet music spaces as well as the wild and rowdy party scenes.

10. Start a band yourself! The best way to be able to empathize with the local music scene is to be an active part of it. If you’re a creator of music in the area, you’ll probably find yourself being drawn into the scene itself.

t a December 5 meeting hosted by the Peninsula Council for Work-force Devel opment, Governor

Terry McAuliffe announced the public launch of SkillsOnline, WHRO’s new online course service, and the creation of a series of career readiness modules that WHRO is developing to help Virginians gain the skills they need to enter the work-force. Working with subject matter experts and a panel of industry advisors, WHRO is putting its instructional and online course development expertise to work to create the first five of 21 work readiness modules covering the soft and hard skills identified by the University of Vir ginia’s Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service as those most important to employers for career entry and advancement. The first five modules will cover the following skills:

The modules will be made available free of charge through SkillsOnline.org to all users. The initial modules are partially funded by grants from the Hampton Roads’ Community Foundation and the Corporation for Public Broad casting through the American Graduate program. Additional funding is being sought to produce the remaining courses and collateral materials.

“WHRO’s work readiness modules are an example of the public-private partnership that is increasing Virginian’s access to workforce training, and will help employers put more Virginians to work,” the Governor said. “WHRO will make the work readiness modules available at no cost to every work force investment board, social service agency, K-12 school, community college, and employer in the Commonwealth for their

use in an instructor-led blended learning environment. The curriculum is correlated to Virginia’s standards of learning and to the criteria used by the career assessment organizations that provide certification in Virginia and across the country.” Course content will also be distributed through eMediaVA, Virginia’s digital learning library which WHRO developed and operates through a contract with the Virginia Department of Education serving more than 145,000 teachers in Virginia.

Bert Schmidt, President and CEO of WHRO, said, “WHRO is experienced in creating engaging online learning resourc-es. Our high school courses are currently used by schools across Virginia and we have managed Virtual Virginia, the state’s world language and advanced placement virtual school since its inception. We are proud of this opportunity to help adult Virginians prepare to enter and advance in their careers.”

hat comes to mind when you think of a champion? For many it is associated with sports and

the Olympic Games. More recently it has taken on another more heroic meaning — a champion of youth in the American Graduate Champion movement.

American Graduate Champion is a part of American Graduate: Let’s Make it Happen, a public media initiative to help communi-ties implement solutions to the high school dropout crisis and raise the national high school graduation rate to 90% by 2020. An American Graduate Champion is anyone who commits their time, skills, and resources to help youth graduate. They play an active role in improving the educational and career outcomes for youth and can be a parent, teacher, volunteer, coach, neighbor or even a friend. Though the national rate has increased from below 75% in 2006 to 80%, there are critical gaps in reaching the goal of 90%. About 40 percent of young men of color, one-third of students from low-income families, and a large numbers of students with disabilities do not receive diplomas. No one has discovered the single solution to prevent youth from leaving school. A champion can help at-risk students realize their potential and envision an exciting and rewarding future, a future they are motivated to work towards.

School Leaders Gather to Discuss Public Education in Hampton Roads

ast month, we mentioned that two important guests recently visited our station: Paula Kerger, President of

PBS, and Anne Holton, Virginia’s Secretary of Education.

While at WHRO, the two met with our HRETA Superintendents Advisory Council (SAC) and Educational Advisory Committee (EAC) to present their education initiatives and discuss important education-related issues. The Hampton Roads Educational Telecommunications Association SAC and EAC include superintendents and school board representatives from each of WHRO’s 19 owner-member school divisions.

To start the meeting, Secretary Holton praised the group’s collaborative efforts and the great gains that have been made for public education through their partnership.

After introductory remarks from Ms. Kerger and Secretary Holton, the group discussed relevant education issues such as finding ways to close the achievement gap, the effec-tive integration of technology in classrooms, the need for public and private sectors to col-laborate for the benefit of public education, and how to increase parent engagement.

“We are determined to be good partners to you and you keep telling us how,” said Holton, referring to the Virginia Department of Education. The group made many sugges-tions and recommendations to the Secretary including ways to best use available funding and revise SOL testing policies.

Regarding the state education budget, the Secretary explained that while there continue to be funding cuts, the partnership with WHRO helps stretch dollars further. In fact,

every year, WHRO prepares Annual Impact Statements for all of its owner member school divisions, detailing the educational services provided by WHRO to that division and the savings the division received as a HRETA member. We estimate that during the 2013-2014 school year, WHRO saved public schools in Hampton Roads nearly $15 million.

After the meeting, the superintendents, school board representatives, and Secretary Holton resolved to convene again within the next year and a half to continue the conversation, agreeing that gathering to-gether to discuss and solve issues benefits everyone involved. “We can do big things in this room that we probably cannot do one to one, whether we’re big or small [school divisions]… we’re smarter when we’re all together,” said Ashby Kilgore, superintendent

of Newport News Public Schools. “WHRO has been a wonderful asset to Newport News and I think to this whole community.”

our husband, wife, son or daughter is finally home! Undoubtedly you’ve wondered, worried, felt sad, proud,

and lonely. You may have had sleepless nights worrying about your loved one’s safety in the war zone. Now you can breathe a sigh of relief. You and your service member should both be proud of serving our country, and can look forward to your life together again. But it’s not always that simple. Common War Zone Experiences

Your loved one’s time in the war zone will affect them for a long time. Experi ences in the military and during deployment have helped make her or him more responsible, a better leader, and a team player. But you know better than most that he or she may have been exposed to hostile fire, or witnessed the death or injury of friends or fellow soldiers, civilians, or enemy combatants. Your loved one may have re ceived serious injuries. Having been in an unfamiliar setting and an unfamiliar culture may have further complicated these experiences. All the while, your soldier, sailor or airman was in full military mindset. It can be difficult to change back to being a “civilian” upon returning home. When your loved one returns, you may feel like you hardly know one an other. It takes time to rebuild connections, trust and intimacy and to re-learn how to rely on one another for sup port. Everyone’s plans for the future, dreams, and expectations may be different

because of changes that occurred in the war zone, at home, or in both places. You may also need to re-negotiate roles. For instance, you may not want to give up the independence you had while your service member was deployed. Planning ahead is the ideal, but you can still prepare for your service member’s return by taking at least some of the following steps:

Adjusting to the New Norm

For partners, there is usually a “honeymoon” phase shortly after demobilization, but it will probably be temporary. If you have children, they will have grown. Your loved one has been through a traumatic experiences. You have had to face new situations and challenges in their absence. You might even feel angry that you had to handle so much on your own while they were away. Your life has changed, too. You may have developed new relation ships and new ways of thinking and acting. You may be feeling pride in what you were able to accomplish while they were away. In some

cases, issues of infidelity may have arisen, and if so, you may need to talk about your com-mitment to the relationship and each other. Children also need to be prepared for the return of a father, mother or sibling. They might take a while to warm up again, espe-cially if they were very young when he or she left. Children react differently depending on their age. Infants typically react to changes in their schedule, physical environment, or the caretaker’s mood and availability. They may show apathy, refuse to eat, or even lose weight. Toddlers may sulk, cry, throw temper tantrums, or not sleep well if their caretaker is having problems or is unavailable. Pre-schoolers can react with toilet issues, thumb sucking, sleep problems, clinginess, and separation anxiety. They may also be irritable, depressed, aggressive, or complain about aches and pains. They might think their parent was deployed because “I was bad.” School age children may be irritable, aggres sive, or whiny. They may get stomach-aches, headaches, etc. Very often, preschool and school-age children also worry about the safe ty of the parent at home. Adolescents may be irritable or rebel-lious, more so than usual. They may also find their new family roles and responsibilities a burden or dislikable once a deployed parent returns home. You can help them overcome these thoughts with patient, loving care. To help children at every age, you can:

• Educate yourself about what to expect and think about how you’ll cope.• Discuss how you’ll handle balance of work, home responsibilities, and leisure time for both of you, before he or she returns.• Talk to other people who have experi- enced the return of a service member.• Live the healthiest lifestyle possible.• Remember that each reunion may be different, there is no normal.

• Provide extra attention, care, and physical closeness.• Understand that they may be angry (and perhaps rightly so).• Discuss things. Let kids know they can talk about how they feel. Accept what they have to say, and don’t tell them they shouldn’t feel the way they do.• Tell your kids their feelings are normal. And, be pre pared to tell them this many times.• Maintain routines and make plans for upcoming events.
