Rabbi Rami Shapiro Aug 4 On August 4, at SJC, the Adult
Education Committee is
sponsoring an evening with Rabbi
Rami Shapiro, a world renowned
author (including The Sacred Art
of Loving Kindness), teacher, and
speaker on subjects about liberal
Judaism and contemporary
spirituality. The evening begins at
6:30 p.m. with a choice of dairy or
vegan dinner, followed at 7:30 by
Rabbi Rami’s discussion, and
concluding with Havdalah at 9:00.
Rabbi Rami has entitled this event,
“What’s Your Elevator Speech.”
Imagine you’re riding up an
elevator, when someone asks,
“What is Judaism and why do you
bother with it?” You’ve got less
than 60 seconds to respond. What
would you say? In this interactive
conversation with Rabbi Rami, we
will share a variety of “elevator
speeches.” It is sure to be an
exciting, inspirational event. Mark
your calendars and prepare your
elevator speech!
Yoga Shalom Aug 13 & 27 Join Reb Lisa for Yoga Shalom at
SJC on Monday, August 13 and
27, 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. On August
13, we will have Intermediate
Practice, and on August 27, Chair
Practice. Yoga Shalom is a unique
worship experience that combines
kavannot, yoga asana, and chant
together in a restorative mind
body and spirit practice. Yoga
Shalom is for everyone and can be
done sitting in a chair with those
of limited abilities, as well as with
those with advanced Yoga
experience. Linking the Sefirot
(Kabbalistic energy centers) to the
imagery of the body, balance, and
insight toward inner peace are
primary in Yoga Shalom, while
the practice of sacred chant is fully
integrated. Open your heart, quiet
your mind, and restore your spirit
with Yoga Shalom! Bring a mat or
towel, and dress comfortably! Due
to the High Holy Days, a class will
not be held in September, but will
resume in October.
Shabbat B’Que Aug 18 SJC will celebrate our
membership with our annual
Shabbat-B’Que. Shabbat morning
services on Saturday, August 18,
will be followed by a barbeque
sponsored by the membership
committee. We invite everyone to
attend and to bring any potential
members you may know with you.
This event gives us a chance to
promote membership at Seaside.
Please join us for great food and a
great chance to meet and greet
long time and new members.
Torah Study at Seaside Aug 18 & 25 Grab your favorite Torah
Commentary and spend the hour
before Shabbat Morning Services
studying the Parashah of the week.
Starting at 9 a.m. before the 10
a.m. morning service, Reb Lisa
will guide our exploration of the
weekly reading and together we
will glean it’s pearls of wisdom.
This is a new program that will
occur before every Shabbat
Morning Service. Torah Study
will be on August 18 and 25, and
on September 22.

Co-President’s Message - Alyssa Simon
What exciting times are ahead for
Seaside. On July 7, Reb Lisa led
her first Havdalah on the Beach to
a record breaking crowd. We
estimate over 120 congregants
overtook the Gordon’s Pond
Pavilion. It was a very lovely
night and a great way to kick off
Reb Lisa’s tenure as our new
religious `. In the same token, Reb
Lisa officiated her first Friday
night service the following week
to a lovely crowd and wooed us
with music and spiritual guidance.
In addition, we held our first open
congregational information
session to present the preliminary
plans for the building expansion.
We had a great turnout. This was
also the official kick off of the
capital campaign. It’s a joy to see
the ideas discussed during the
March 2017 strategic planning
event come to fruition. We hope
you share this passion for the
expansion and give generously.
Shabbat Services Every Week In August, SJC will hold a
Shabbat service each week. See
page 1 for the schedule. Then, in
September, we return to our twice
a month schedule with Shabbat
services on the first Friday
evening and the third Saturday
morning of each month, plus, of
course, High Holy Day and
festival services in September and
early October.
Minutes of SJC Board Minutes are available to interested
members after the Board approves
them. Copies may be obtained by
contacting our Secretary.
Message from Reb Lisa My first month at Seaside has
been wonderful, and I’ve enjoyed
meeting many of you and
spending time together. Havdalah
on the Beach was very well
attended and the feeling emanating
from the sense of community was
heartwarming and welcoming. I
already feel so at home in
Rehoboth as I continue to get
settled, and I want to thank
everyone who has gone out of
their way to reach out and help me
in my transition. With
inspirational classes and
informative meetings, as well as
worship and social gatherings, I
feel as though I’m becoming part
of a caring family.
As I write these words, I’m still on
a spiritual high from the recent
Aleph Kallah that I attended,
which gave me the opportunity to
study with Rabbi Shefa Gold and
many other incredible Jewish
Renewal teachers. Being part of
that community has taught me the
true meaning of friendship,
compassion, and deep faith in The
Great Mystery we call God. I will
be teaching and speaking about
what I learned as well as sharing
music from my time at Kallah in
the coming weeks.
The High Holy Days are drawing
closer and with them the
opportunity for introspection and
reckoning with our actions and our
spirits. May the final days of
summer bring us time in which to
begin that examination and return
to what brings us a sense of peace
and wellbeing. In this way, we
will begin to prepare for the Days
of Awe coming soon.

Capital Campaign Launched for Building Expansion Seaside has launched a capital
fundraising campaign, “Building
Our Future,” to enable us to more
than double the size of our
existing home on Holland Glade
Road. In the past two decades,
SJC has grown from a handful of
founders to become a valued
center for spiritual, educational,
and social programs for over 300
families, with projections for
continued significant growth.
The official launch of this
fundraising effort was on Sunday,
July 15, when members had an
opportunity to view and comment
on preliminary plans for the
design of the expanded building.
While we do not yet have final
figures for the construction, we
expect the cost of the project to be
about $650,000 to $700,000.
Seaside has allocated $250,000
toward the expansion from our
reserve funds, and early
contributors to the campaign have
already pledged approximately
$200,000. The remainder is up to
the rest of us. Capital campaign
packets are in the mail. This is
your opportunity to become an
architect of SJC’s future.
The campaign committee includes
Marilyn Feldman as chair, Mat
Ash, Marsha Davis, David
Herschler, Jeff Rosen, and Miriam
Zadek. If you have questions,
please contact Marilyn at 301-343-
2706 or [email protected].
Parking at SJC Please park on the hard asphalt strip
closest to the building only if you
have difficulty walking on the gravel.
That way, the strip is available for
those who need the firmer surface to
walk safely.
Board/Committee Meetings Meetings are at SJC unless
otherwise noted. Meetings are
open to SJC members.
Board Meetings – Sunday, August
19, at 10 a.m., and Sunday,
September 16, at 12:15 p.m.
Adult Education – Monday,
August 13, 5 p.m. (meets second
Monday each month).
Chesed/Community Service –
Friday, August 17 and September
21 (meets third Friday each
month). Chesed meets at 10 a.m.
and Community Service at 10:30.
Membership – Tuesday, August
14, 7 p.m.
Bowling League Interested in joining a Seaside
bowling league? We need 16 or
more people to form a league at
the bowling alley in Millsboro,
DE, to bowl once a week.
Depending on size of the group,
we would bowl on a weekday
morning or afternoon or one
evening. If interested, please email
Leslie Gladstone at
[email protected], or call 410-
627-0828 and leave a message.
This activity is sponsored by the
Social Committee.
Pizza in the Hut Sept 23 Mark your calendar! The annual
Sukkot Service and Pizza in the
Hut will be held this year on
Sunday, September 23, starting at
5 p.m. All members and their
families are invited to join us for
Havdalah services then for pizza
and salad dinner in our Sukkah.
The Membership Committee
hopes to see you at the event.
Let’s fill the Sukkah with joy and
camaraderie.

Board Nominations Requested SJC’s annual membership meeting
will occur on Sunday, November
11. At the meeting, we will elect
three members to our 9-person
Board of Directors. Nominations
close on September 12, as our By-
Laws require that nominations be
submitted at least sixty days prior
to the meeting.
We are seeking nominations for 3
positions. Board members
completing their first 3-year term
are Eric Doroshow, Buddy
Feldman, and David Udoff. Buddy
and David are running for another
3-year term. Eric has decided not
to run for another term.
Nominees for the Board must be
SJC members in good standing. If
you are interested or know of
anyone who would be willing to
serve, please contact SJC’s
Nominating Committee Chair,
Hank Smith, at 302-644-1581 or
[email protected]. Before
making a nomination, please be
sure the individual you are
nominating is willing to serve. The
election will be held at the annual
meeting, and the term begins one
month after the annual meeting.
Duties of Board members include
attendance at monthly Board
meetings, open/close the building
for services, attendance at Shabbat
and holiday services as often as
possible, chair or serve on a
committee, and in general, be
active in SJC activities.
Haftorah Sessions There won’t be a Haftorah class in
August, but we are planning
additional sessions. Watch this
newsletter for dates.
A Taste of Mussar Aug 9 Our Mussar class continues on
August 9, at 7:30 p.m., at SJC.
Mussar is a spiritual discipline
within Judaism, a way to explore
and nurture our soul traits and
elevate our inner life. We meet on
the second Thursday of each
month. Our discussion guide is
Everyday Holiness: The Jewish
Spiritual Path of Mussar by Alan
Morinis. In August, we’ll finish
discussing Gratitude (Chapter 9)
and begin discussing Compassion
(Chapter 10). We'll tie these traits
to Humility and Patience, two
traits we’ve already studied. If you
are interested in becoming a new
participant, please call our
moderator, George Beckerman, at
202-903-5060.
SJC Book Group Aug 16 Join us at SJC for our next book
discussion on Thursday, August
16, at 7 p.m. Harvey Fruman will
moderate the hour-long discussion
about the fascinating book,
Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark
Sullivan. This is an exciting story
(a fast read!) about WWII Italy
and is based on the real-life
experience of Pino Lella, a
teenager who became involved in
rescuing Jews and smuggling them
into Switzerland. Please join us.
Any questions, please contact the
group facilitator, Enid Zafran, at
302-233-4877.
Yes, You Can! Have you ever wanted to attend an
SJC event but thought you couldn't
afford it? SJC policy is to work with
you if you have a financial hardship.
Please contact the treasurer to
confidentially discuss your situation.
Religious School Registration for New Students The 2018-2019 Religious School
year is right around the corner.
Returning students and parents
will receive enrollment
information this summer via
email. If you have a child who is
new to the area or new to SJC and
want to enroll him or her, contact

Parents should enroll children ages
4-12. Students may begin in the
religious school as long as they
turn 5 before January 1, 2019.
2018 – 2019 Holiday Course for Preschoolers & Parents SJC is offering its next holiday
course for 3- and 4-year-olds and
their parents. There will be six

and Shabbat through story, music,
and crafts. The cost of the series

Hospitality for Rabbi Burstyn Rabbi Simcha Daniel Burstyn will
again be coming from Israel to
lead the High Holy Day services
with Reb Lisa. Our tradition over
the past eight years has been to
provide hospitality and meals
while he is with us. Your gracious
offers of opening your homes to
him will truly enhance your
holiday celebration while making
Rabbi Simcha Daniel's time in our
area warm and friendly.
We are seeking a volunteer to
house him while he is in the area
for Yom Kippur for September
16-20. We already have housing
for him for Rosh Hashanah. He
will have a car and can provide his
own transportation to the various
families who will be hosting him
for many of his meals and to
services.
Rabbi Simcha Daniel enjoys
dining with SJC members and
getting to know them better. He
eats kosher meat and chicken as
well as fish and parve meals. He is
lactose intolerant and does not eat
dairy products. Be creative with
salads, fish, pasta dishes, and
kosher meats!
If you can welcome him into your
home for a meal during his stay,
we would greatly appreciate it. We
need volunteers to welcome him
into their home for:
Friday, Sep 7, Shabbat dinner
Saturday, Sep 8, lunch or dinner
Monday, Sep 10, Rosh Hashanah
lunch
Monday, Sep 10, dinner following
Tashlich
Tuesday, Sep 11, dinner
Sunday, Sep 16, dinner
Monday, Sep 17, lunch or dinner
Tuesday Sep 18, dinner before Kol
Nidre
Your participation in hosting
Rabbi Simcha Daniel for housing
or meals is a wonderful
opportunity for you and him to get
to know each other on a more
personal level. SJC thanks you so
much for helping out. Please
contact Susan Aaronson at 302
278 7272 or [email protected]
to let her know when you are
available.
High Holy Day Volunteers Critically Needed Volunteers are needed to turn the
Epworth Church sanctuary into a
space of Jewish worship for the
High Holy Days. Your
participation is critically needed
on Sunday, September 9, 1 to 3
p.m., as we have only a short time
frame from the end of the church
service to the start of Rosh
Hashanah to complete the turn
around. Volunteers are needed
again on Tuesday, September 18,
9 to 11 a.m., to prepare for Kol
Nidre and Yom Kippur. With your
help, SJC will enjoy another
wonderful worship experience in
our "home away from home."
Please contact Susan Aaronson at
302-278-7272 or
[email protected] if you are
able to volunteer on either of the
these dates. Thank you so very
much.
High Holy Day Schedule The High Holy Day and
Sukkot/Simchat Torah schedule
can be found on page 10. See page
11 for information about making
your reservation for SJC’s Break-
the-Fast meal.

HHD Youth Services/Activities Volunteers Needed Activities and services for young
people on Rosh Hashanah and
Yom Kippur mornings begin at 10
a.m. Two programs are available.
One is a service for those who are
old enough to participate (usually
9 and older), and the other is an
activity program with stories and
arts and crafts for our younger
folks. An adult family member
must accompany children under 5.
All the young people will come
into the sanctuary and sit as a
group for the taking out and
reading of the Torah. After the
Torah is read, they will join their
families in the sanctuary for the
remainder of the service.
Snacks will be provided for the
children on Rosh Hashanah, but
for the Yom Kippur program,
parents will need to provide their
children’s snacks.
The Youth Education Committee
is in search of a few volunteers to
help with both programs. For more
information and to volunteer,
please contact Marjorie Kobrin at
914-419-2972 or
Sukkah Building Volunteers are need for the set up
and take down of our
congregation’s Sukkah. Set up is
scheduled for Sunday, September
23, starting at 9 a.m. Take down is
scheduled for Sunday, October 7,
also at 9 a.m. All those interested
in a challenging project and good
fun should come. The more hands,
the easier it is. All are welcome to
participate.
Kugels & Desserts Needed for Break-the-Fast On these hot summer days it's
hard to think ahead to the High
Holy Days. However, we must, so
dust off your recipe boxes, and
choose your favorite kugel or
dessert to share at the Break-the
Fast Dinner. We need dairy or
pareve kugels made in 8”x11"
disposable aluminum pans. We
also need dairy or parve desserts,
homemade or store bought. If you
want to volunteer, we need to hear
from you by September 11, or
earlier. Please contact Anita
Smulyan about making kugels at
302-703-2900; and contact Idylle
(Dill) Patz at [email protected]
or 302-537-4368 with your dessert
contributions. Please do not bring
any kugels or desserts to the
Break-the-Fast without contacting
Anita or Dill by that date. Any
other questions, contact Anita.

Havdalah on the Beach A Beautiful Evening Saturday, July 8, was a clear, cool
evening at Cape Henlopen State
Park in Rehoboth Beach, a perfect
night to celebrate Havdalah. Over
100 people (the largest group ever
for SJC) filled the Gordon’s Pond
pavilion for a picnic dinner.
Afterwards, we trooped over the
dune for a short Havdalah service
and songs, conducted by our new
religious leader, Reb Lisa Levine.
It was a glorious evening of
community, sponsored by the
social committee. Thanks to a few
dedicated volunteers who showed
up early to claim our spot, and
those who stayed after for clean-
up. Mark your calendars for next
year’s gathering, July 13, 2019!
Diaper Drive Thank You Thank you to our generous
members who donated diapers for
the Community Resource Center
Baby Pantry. About 20 packages
were collected at Friday night
services on July 6 and Havdalah at
the Beach on July 7. The
Community Service Committee is
holding collection drives
throughout the year to benefit
local agencies. Our next collection
will be held during the fall to
benefit Clothing for Kids. Thank
you for your support!

Pastoral Support – Just A Phone Call Away Pastoral support is available to visit
patients at local hospitals, nursing
homes, and rehab facilities. We can
help families dealing with the
death of a loved one. Our Religious
Leader is available to help families
through the rituals and processes
surrounding death, including
funeral and burial, Shiva, and
notifying the SJC community.
Other SJC members take care of
providing a Shiva tray or meal of
comfort or a contribution in
memory of the loved one. Contact
SJC’s Chesed/Community Service
Committee Chair or SJC’s
Religious Leader. See pages 2 and
3 for their contact information.
Helping Hands at Seaside During an illness or other difficult
time, many of us could use some
extra help, whether it’s having
someone provide a home-cooked
meal or assistance doing an
errand. Did you know that at SJC
this type of temporary support is
available through Helping Hands,
a service of the Chesed
Committee? Seaside members can
provide meals, stop in for a
friendly visit, or take care of
errands. If your situation is
ongoing, Helping Hands can help
you find the long-term assistance
you will need, with information
and referrals to transportation
services, social service agencies or
other community resources.
Seaside Jewish Community is a
family, so please reach out if you
or any member you know needs
help. Contact Anita Smulyan at
302-703-2900.
