GAME PREVIEWVSFarrington Governors Wai‘anae Seariders

Stadium lights shine and the dull roar of the crowd can be heard as they settle into the stands waiting for the game to start. The sound of football has

found its way back to Raymond Torii Field at Wai‘anae High School.

For over a year, Searider fans have not had the chance to cheer on their team because the stadium’s bleachers have been under construction.

With the bleachers condemned, spectators were left with nowhere to sit and the football team had no option but to play all of their games away from home. Tonight marks the first home game the Searider football team has had since October 14, 2011 and the team hopes to make the most of the home crowd. “They are all excited about it, it’s nice again, it’s always good for the community that they didn’t have to travel as far,” head coach Daniel Matsumoto said.

For the boys on the team, the return to their community adds a needed boost to the team’s morale and gives them extra confidence to play at their best. “Being back on our home field, playing in front of our fans is just great, it makes us want to play hard and make everyone proud,” sophomore defensive Linemen John Kapua VI said.

Though the season is only beginning, being back in Wai‘anae has made the entire team more positive. “[We’re] very optimistic. We got good players this year, so very optimistic. Hopefully, we do well this year; but so far so good,” Matsumoto said.

Wai‘anae High School football has always been a major part of the Wai‘anae community, with generations of families contributing to the Searider gridiron tradition. For Seariders past and present home is where the heart is and the heart of Wai‘anae is back with the Seariders return. Welcome back Seariders.

SNAP CHAT

Junior Justice Jardine“To be back playing on the Raymond Torii Field

in front of our whole community where they can watch and support

their Wai‘anae Seariders, to do work back on our

football field, nothing can beat that feeling.”

Junior Trensten Spragling

“It’s almost indescribable, the feeling I get know-ing my team and I will be able to have home

games. To get that hype before each game is

amazing and I’ll hold it down for my city.”

Junior Jonathan Rosa“It feels great to be back on the field wearing our

Wai‘anae jerseys and just being able to play football

with the boys putting in work.”

Senior Jemery Willes“To be back at our own football field feels great.

The feeling of coming out of our own locker room ready is a feeling that’s amazing to have back.”

Junior Niko Kala-Mahiai“I do it for my family, com-munity, and school so it

doesn’t matter what field I play on. All that matters is the work and dedication

we put in for practice and in the game. I do believe in home field advantage. WESTSIDE FOR LIFE!”

Soph. Treshar Sotelo“It feels exciting because

it will be my first time cheering at home game.”

Junior Angelika Ayau“I’m excited and happy that the bleachers are done. It’s been awhile since I’ve been able to

cheer on my home feild. It’s something I’ve been missing for a long time.”

Senior Briahna Rivera“I’d rather have away

games because I like to travel with my team and I love the variety of foods

at the other schools.”

Senior Courtney Aboy“It feels good to be able

to cheer at home for my last year. The crowd

wasn’t engaging last year and it just didn’t feel

the same. I think that because more people are

going to the games.”

Junior Jasielle Phillips“I’m excited because we get more crowd participa-

tion here at home.”

Soph. Chanson Akiona“It feels great to play on

our home field again becasue it’s a different

feeling when you’re play-ing on your field. It’s even greater that we’ll be able to have homecoming at

our own school.”

Soph. Mosiah Brame“Being on the field again

feels amazing. There’s no better feeling than playing

in your hometown with your whole city cheering

and going crazy. I love it.”

Soph. Alex Quijano“I can’t describe how

great it feels to be back playing football in our

hometown. I’m proud to represent the west side.

SEARIDER PRIDE!”

Soph. Paxston Popa“Being back on our home

field is a good feeling because we get to show our city, what Wai‘anae

Pride is all about.”

Soph. Sheldon Bailey“The reason why I like

playing on our home field is because my family and

friends get to cheer for us on our own bleachers as we play hard on our home field. SEARIDER

NATION!”
