Our ownfamily has already been affected so now we're on amission to bring cool back into sun safety and helperadicate skin cancer 1 person at a time. By beingeducated around sunscreens and sun safety we can allsafely reduce our risks associated with the sun.

Sun Protection FactorsSPF ratings are determined by how much of the suns

UVB rays are blocked by the sunscreen.SPF

SPF

SPF

153050+

An SPF 15 sunscreen blocks 93% ofthe suns UVB rays

An SPF 30 sunscreen blocks 97% ofthe suns UVB rays

An SPF 50+ sunscreen blocks aminimum of 98% of the suns UVBrays

Although higher SPF provides more ultra violet protection, it doesn'tmean you have a 'suit of armour', you still need to be sun smart.

Seagull Milk Suncare Tips:Try to stay very well protected between 11am - 3pmespecially in the hot summer months. This is whenthe sun is at its strongest.Don't forget to apply those easily missed areas on thebody such as ears, upper back, hands & feet.

Remember to reapply sunscreen every 2 hours, especially after sweating, toweling or swimming.

For sunscreen to work correctly you need to apply it atleast 20 minutes before sun exposure.

For extra sun protection use products like hats, beachunbrellas, tinted zinc and sun glasses.

// Understanding UV Rays

UV stands for 'ultra violet' and it is a form of energy thatthe sun emits. We can't see or feel UV rays.

UVB - The portion of the sun's UV spectrum withwavelengths in the range 290 to 320 nanometres isknown as 'UVB', and is mainly responsible for sunburn.

UVA - The portion of the sun's UV spectrum withwavelengths in the range 320 to 400 nanometres isknown as 'UVA'. This penetrates deeper into the skinslayers than UVB radiation does. It's considered to beprimarily responsible for longer term damage resultingin melanomas and other skin cancers.

Only a 'broad spectrum' labelled sunscreen providesprotecion from both UVA & UVB rays.

UV radiation can be just as high on a cooler day as itis on a hot day especially if the sky is clear.

In the snowfields up to 80% of sunburning radiationis reflected from clean snow and over 90% canpenetrate light cloud.

Even underwater to half a metre the UV radiation is40% as intense as on the surface.

With the rise in altitude by every 300 metres, theultra violet radiation increases by 4%

// Types Of Sunscreens

Mineral Based SunscreensThese sunscreens use physical UV blockers that sit ontop of the skins surface to reflect the suns rays. Thisform of protection acts like a mirror on the skin. Boththe suns UVA and UVB rays are reflected away fromthe skin rather than being absorbed into it.

ZINC OXIDE TITANIUM DIOXIDEMineral Based Ingredients in Sunscreens:

Chemical Based SunscreensThese types of sunscreens use chemical UV filters toprotect the skin from burning, however, they absorbthe suns ultra violet rays into the skin rather thanreflecting them (refer to diagram opposite). As theseingredients absorb into the skin they can also befound in the bloodstream. One such chemical'Oxybenzone' is known to damage coral reefs makingthem responsible for the destruction to the oceanic environment. One can only wonder what this doesinside the human body if it has the power to bleachcoral!

Chemical Ingredients in Sunscreens: OXYBENZONEHOMOSALATE

AVOBENZONEOCTINOXATE

OCTOCRYLENEOCTISALATE

Mineral vs Chemical

Mineral Based Sunscreens:- offers broad spectrum protection - are safer for the body and for the environment

Chemical Based Sunscreens:- are often known to react to people with sensitive skin- are around 70% of listed sunscreens on the market

Sunscreens are made from many varying ingredientstoday and like anything, price can often be a goodindicator of the quality. It's important to understandthe dangers of some chemicals found in manysunscreens so you can make wise choices for thehealth of you and your family as well as our planet.

Being part of a family where multiple members havebeen affected by skin cancer, Joshua Apitz knew all toowell the importance of sun safety. However, he wasn't

able to find a sunscreen that didn't sting his eyes orleave a sticky, gross and slippery feeling after he'd

applied it. Once he'd headed out for a surf it becamedangerously slippery which negatively impacted his

surfing performance, so he just stopped wearingsunscreen altogether.

Realising that was a very risky predicament to be in

given his family history, at age 15 Josh embarked on amission to create a solution to this dilemma. It became

a rewarding journey and a passion to try and helpothers, who like him no longer wore sunscreen for

similar reasons. They too became candidates to skincancer. In 2018 at just 16 years of age, Josh had the

solution ready for market. A new and innovative non-slip formulated sunscreen called Seagull Milk was

born.

Seagull Milk is an award winning sunscreen
