The Worshipful Company of Fishmongers attended this, their first Future of Food event in Grimsby to support careers in the Fishmonger sector. Alison Freeman and Gavin O’Donnell where able to talk to the many visitors their stand received, about the history of fishmongering which goes back to medieval times and the exciting future that fishmongering has in the UK. As well as the newly launched Master Fishmonger Standard which aims to recognise various tiers of excellence in fishmongering, Alison and Gavin encouraged more than 80 individuals and groups to take part in the Fun Fishmonger Online quiz set up by Seafish. Fancy a go? Here it is.

Also on hand to talk to pupils about fishmongering was Emma Mckeating who is a well-known advocate of all things fish and shellfish. Emma can be seen here with her display of seafood which attracted many visitors who were at first cautious about the look, feel and smell of the product. But, after a short while Emma had informed, educated and persuaded many of the pupils to have a go.

Throughout the event, Ivan Jaines White delivered informative, educational and highly entertaining demonstrations of knife skills to school groups. Ivan’s 45 minute long demonstrations and discussions of fish and shellfish ranged far and wide, covering the amazing ability of octopus to mimic their sorroundings to how to hand process the more common UK fish species. As the manager of the Grimsby Seafood Village Training School, Ivan is well versed in the art of training and education and is one of the six partners that make up the Yorkshire and Lincolnshire Seafood Training Network.

At the end of the programme Ivan also met with some of the Young Seafood Leaders Network members (below).
