HISTORY OF THE FISH FESTIVAL CELEBRATIONS
Jesus Christ was preaching to a multitude of people at the edge of the shore of lake of Gen-nes’-
aret. The crowd was so overwhelming that he decided to enter one of the fishing boats. As he
looked around for the owners of the boats he saw Simon Peter, James and John washing out their
nets. He asked them to take him out a bit from the shore in one of the boats. After preaching he
told the fishermen to go deeper into the water and cast their nets.
They were a bit reluctant seeing that they were experienced fishermen and they had just combed
that area for the entire night and caught nothing. They eventually followed Jesus’ order and they
caught so many fishes that their nets broke under the load and another boat had to assist with the
large quantity of fish which were caught. Luke 5:1-9.
This was the beginning of the St. Peters’ day celebrations. On the morning of St. Peter’s Day a
priest is followed by a procession from the church to the beach where he will bless the boats of
the fishermen and the fishermen themselves. The priest will then bless the sea and thank God for
the many bountiful richness of the sea that he has provided over the past year.
After the formal part of the proceedings, its free food, drinks and celebrations of all forms on the
beach and in the fishing village .The night is filled with activities of parties and street festivals
(similar to Point Fortin Borough Celebration).
