Seacourt - Our Story

Over the last 19 years Seacourt has forged a path from being the same as every other printer to becomingone of the world’s leading environmental printers. We were the very first ‘zero waste-to-landfill’ printingcompany and have had the pleasure of being a recipient of not one, but two Queen’s Awards. To add to thiswe are now a pioneer of the next generation of print technology – LightTouch®.

A family-owned company soon to be celebrating its 70th birthday, our environmental journey began in 1996when then Chairman, Jim Dinnage, discovered that the print industry was the sixth worst polluting in theworld. Climate change was already a growing threat yet he found technology existed that could help us makea positive difference. This led to a complete change in thinking and a turn-around in strategy with a newwaterless lithographic printing process being adopted.

Since then we’ve continually strived towards best practice in environmental sustainability and have passedmilestone after milestone on our journey. In 1997 we went waterless (the ultimate environmental printprocess), in 1999 we were the second printing company worldwide to attain EMAS certification, in 2001 webecame carbon neutral, in 2003 we switched to 100% renewable energy, in 2009 we achieved zero waste tolandfill and in 2015, having developed LightTouch® we became the first (and currently only) printer in theworld to use waterless LED-UV drying technology.

During this time we have won many awards for our environmental best practice including two Queen’s Awardsfor sustainable development in 2007 and 2011.

Service and quality of course go hand in hand with our environmental focus. Our aims for our clients are toexceed their expectations of quality and service, to act as an Enabler of Change, and to make a positivedifference that goes beyond our factory and into our clients own supply chains.

Environmental Overview

Seacourt is now known for its radical approach to the environment, we were one of the very first printingfirms to achieve EMAS certification in 1999, an accreditation renowned for its high standards and stringentdemands. Our company has been recognized as ‘one of the top three leading environmental printers in theworld' by a worldwide printing association, and we have gone on to win two coveted Queen's Award forSustainable Development.

But what does Naturally Responsible printing look like?

Waterless Printing

Waterless Printing is the ultimate environmentally friendly printing process and produces a higher quality ofprint than lithography, with brighter colours, sharper dots and finer screen rulings possible. Swapping towaterless printing and platemaking saved Seacourt 375,000 lts of water a year. That is also water that we arenot contaminating. By removing the alcohol and substitutes from the process we have reduced our VOCoutput by 98%.

Zero-Waste to Landfill

Zero Waste means that at Seacourt we have NO BINS – we waved goodbye to our last Grundon bin in October2009. This means that throughout the whole of the printing process, there is not one waste stream which isnot being re-used or recycled in some way!

100% Renewable Energy

100% Renewable – We’ve been powered by 100% renewable energy from Green Energy since 2003. Thisremoves in the region of 33 tonnes of carbon from our footprint every year.

Recycled / FSC Stock

Wherever possible we promote and persuade our clients to print on recycled stock. Our current percentageof use of recycled stocks are ninety-six percent, the rest being FSC stock.

EMAS

The EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is one of the most stringent environmental auditschemes. Held concurrently since 1999, we were the 2nd printing company worldwide to achieve this standard.

Being Naturally Responsible enables us to produce the highest quality with the lightest touch.

It is our fundamental belief that for every action there is a reaction, this is why the choices we make countand have an impact. For every job we produce on our clients behalf we are using fewer resources, we areensuring that no additional waste is being generated and that there are secondary benefits for the resourcesthat we employ. Ultimately we are working within a circular workflow.

In the words of our MD, Gareth Dinnage, “It’s about being passionate and believing in what you do. We’vealways viewed sustainability as a cornerstone of our business, providing the foundation of all decision-making.Many businesses see sustainability as some kind of add-on function and therefore will never truly embrace itand all the positive opportunities it provides”.

LightTouch®

As a leading champion of Waterless printing we knew all the benefits – improved quality, deeper colourreproduction, finer line screens, reduced dot gain and of course all the environmental benefits of savingsignificant resources – no water, no alcohol or other substitutes producing nasty VOC’s, reduced number ofset up sheets as it is quicker to get to the correct colour… however we believed that we could improve this.

LED Technology – specifically blue LED technology seemed to us the obvious way to improve the process, byadding the function of an energy efficient instant drying technology, using 21st century technology we couldmake further quality and sustainability improvements… however, it did not exist.

Not only did it not exist but we were advised by many global printing press manufactures that it simply wouldnot work!

Undeterred we continued and eventually found a press manufacturer who agreed to build us our vision andthus LightTouch® was created.

LightTouch® is our greatest breakthrough to date. LightTouch® is simply extraordinary, and alongside ourNaturally Responsible workflow sets the blueprint for the print industry of the future. It is a revolution in highperformance, low impact printing. It is a world-first printing process that combines the benefits of waterlesstechnology with instant LED drying.

With LightTouch® there is no compromise. You are guaranteed the most precise, vibrant and versatile printquality through a process that uses no water, near zero emissions and ensures minimal waste. There is nofaster, more accurate or more responsible printing process in the industry. We only use ink and paper. Nowater, no alcohol or substitutes, no seal varnish and no spray powders… the simplest solutions are alwaysthe best.

Benefits of UV LED:

• UV LED is the most environmentally responsible solution for large format digital printing

• UV inks cure directly onto the substrate and are therefore scratch resistant, eliminating the need tolaminate

• The flexible UV curing ink is ECO compliant and does not contain any VOCs

• UV LED lamps are ECO compliant, long lived and their energy consumption is less than half of conventionalUV-curing lamps

• Media deformation is eliminated as UV LED does not create high temperatures.

Summary

Even before developing LightTouch®, Seacourt had already been credited as being one of the top threeenvironmental printers in the world.

We’re zero waste to landfill, 100% alcohol or substitute free, 100% carbon neutral and run on 100% renewableenergy. Since converting to Waterless Offset we’ve saved nearly 7million litres of fresh water.

Along with ISO14001 Environmental and EMAS accreditations we print to ISO12647 Colour Managementstandards and have ISO9001 Quality accreditation. We are holders of two Queen’s Awards for SustainableDevelopment as well as many other awards and accolades.
