From the desk of George Chamberlin: Financial Lessons from Elections

Never mind who won or lost the election in November, there are several economic and investment lessons to be learned. Many people tried adjusting their stock portfolios before the vote in anticipation one or the other candidate would win the White House. Despite years of experience showing the foolishness of trying to time the short-term direction of the markets, most of them were caught in the wrong place at the wrong time.

What we learned was, as the old expression goes, never fight the tape. When stocks want to go up, as has been the case before and since the election, they will go up. And, when stocks want to go down, they will. You will never pick up the Wall Street Journal and see the headline, “Rally starts tomorrow.”

One of my favorite reminders of the stock market performance was learned a few years ago when I was watching a show with my granddaughter, Sophia. During a break they showed a vignette with a young boy who had successfully climbed Mount Everest and several other big mountains. He pointed out climbers do not go up in a straight line. Rather, they move up the mountain each day and then go back down to camp to acclimate to the rare air. The same could be said about investing in stocks.

They do not go straight up but need to go back down a bit when prices reach uncharted territory.

The other lesson we are learning after the election is the reality that interest rates are ready, after nine years of lingering at historic lows, to begin moving higher. As expected, the Federal Reserve boosted short-term rates at the meeting in mid-December. Many want to be homebuyers are closely watching mortgage rates with fear they may spike sharply higher. It looks like the 30-year fixed rate mortgage loan will soon top 4.0 percent. Students of economic history will remind others that rates are still at very, very low levels and likely will stay there for quite some time. Imagine back to September 1981 when the mortgage rates were at 18.5 percent. Even then, people were buying homes and very glad they did regardless of who resided in the White House.
