Julie Bergamin, Skat, ApaSan Project, Planning and monitoring manager, Moldova, [email protected]

With a master in international relations, I became passionate about wa-ter&sanitation during my studies and, barely out of university, I was convinced that I would like to dedicate my career in this domain. Since 8 years now, I had the chance to work in different type of institutions (SDC, NGOs, public water utility, consulting company) on the following subjects: public-public partnership, water tariffs, business models for household water treatment and storage, survey design, community based water supply organizations.

Working since 3 years in Moldova for the Water and Sanitation Project (ApaSan), I am mainly responsible for strategic sector planning, project planning and monitoring.

This is my WTDs baptize as I never had the chance to participate before. Looking forward to meeting, dis-cussing, exchanging and learning!

Camacho Bertha, Skat, Backstopper SDC GPWI (Facilitation WTD), Switzerland, [email protected]

My professional background is in Sociology and Development Management and I have almost 20 years of working experience with various International Agencies such as SDC, the European Commission, the German International Cooperation, as well as various International NGOs and Networks. In 2007, I joined Skat Consulting as Knowledge Management and Networking specialist. I have wide experience in the facilitation of Knowledge Communities and Networks and in process manage-

ment. I enjoy supporting organisational learning and strengthening, providing capacity building and training and in the facilitation of workshops and participatory processes. Additionally, I support organisations and projects in participatory processes, such as assessments and result based monitoring and evaluations.

SA and AGUATUYA. It aims at developing sustainable services for waste-water and solid waste management in small and medium size cities.

The challenges formulated in the SDGs are big, shifting from coverage to sustainable services provision in the Water sector is a big challenge, it will need goods ideas, good people but also time.

Bring humans back inside the natural cycles until 2030 instead of developing the world in an always more fragmented manner

Georges Burri, SDC, Programme Officer / WES Expert, Jordan, [email protected]

I am collaborating with SDC since thirty years. I was principally acting in humanitari-an project post-disasters. Nevertheless, during the past decade, I was involved in the support of UN agencies and also managing direct SDC actions. Beside SDC’s, I was also working for other Institutions like ICRC, Lux-Development, World Bank, African Bank of Development, as well I deed five years in the private sector in overseas business development projects. My field of expertise covers three differ-

ent domains, the technical management of war surgery hospitals and related (ICRC), reconstruction of public infrastructures and individual houses in actions post-disasters and WES in which I was working in different kind of projects around the water cycle.

Actually, SDC presence in water sector became quite visible through different types of actions. Despite the notable difference of SDC budget engaged compare with other governmental cooperation agencies, SDC is gaining position in niches, mainly due to its institutional flexibility and quite quick adaptation to the milieu of actions. Related to this SDC position, I think that SDC budget reduction is a good opportunity to orient the Swiss support in project management to other agencies, principally to Bretton Woods and UN.

Hanna Capeder, SDC Global Programme Water Initiatives, Programme Manager, [email protected]

Hanna Capeder has been part of the GPWI team since 2013. She has worked at the headquarters in Bern, and abroad in Uzbekistan (with SDC) and Costa Rica (with IUCN). Hanna holds an MA in Development from The Hague and Dublin Universities and a CAS in management of development projects in Switzerland. Before joining SDC, she has worked with NGOs on various projects in Benin, Costa Rica and

Mozambique, especially in the rural sector.

Jan Cassin, Forest Trends, Water Initiative Director, United States, [email protected]

Jan is an ecologist with expertise in freshwater systems and watershed science. Her work emphasizes applied research and practice in a wide range of water resource management issues – including integrated watershed management, environmental flows assessment, ecosystem services quantification, wetland and floodplain resto-ration, and innovative financial mechanisms such as water quality trading, wetland

banking, and investments in watershed services (IWS). Jan directs Forest Trends’ work on investments in watershed services, working in six countries with businesses, governments, and communities to implement and scale up natural, or green, infrastructure solutions for water. A particular focus of this work is on devel-oping the knowledge base and practical tools for documenting the performance of green infrastructure in delivering not only water-related services, such as water quality, water supply, and flood mitigation out-comes, but as an essential component in achieving multiple SDGs.

Grégoire Castella, Antenna Foundation, Deputy Director, Switzerland, [email protected]

After completing his PhD in Life Sciences in 2008, Greg got out of the lab and joined the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). He served as a delegate and manager in Ivory Coast, Afghanistan and Colombia. After returning to Switzerland, Greg joined Antenna Technologies, an innovation-for-development foundation, which has successfully brought to the market innovative products to meet the basic

needs of people living at the BOP. Greg and his team are in particular promoting the WATA technology, a local solution to provide safe water to rural areas.

It is time to give the people the means to gain autonomy, regarding the provision of safe water, as well as other essential needs like health, energy access and nutrition.

Binayak Das, Water Integrity Network, Programme coordinator, Germany, [email protected]

Binayak Das joined the Water Integrity Network in 2012. He is the Programme Coordinator for Knowledge, Research and handles country programmes in South and South East Asia. Binayak has experience of about 15 years working on the development sector with a strong expertise on the subjects of water, environment, and sustainable development. Binayak has years of experience working on cross

cutting areas of governance, public policies, integrity and conflict management in South-South East Asia and EU. Previously he has also worked with the IUCN in Bangkok, and with the Centre for Science and Environ-ment in New Delhi. He is an environmental journalist and has reported for the Down To Earth magazine. He has a master’s degree on water management from UNESCO-IHE, Delft. Binayak, is a Panos journalist fellow and author of numerous books, papers and articles on water, environment and sustainable development.

I would like to see that integrity is adequately discussed during the team days and that moving towards 2030, the topic of water integrity is embedded in the policies and practices of various Swiss organizations including SDC.

Christian Eggs, SDC Global Programm Water Initatives, Berater für Sektorpolitik and RésEAU Focal Point, Switzerland, [email protected]

I’m geographer and environmental scientist from the University of Fribourg and EPF Lausanne with twenty-five years of experience in environmental engineering and international cooperation, working for private firms, public administration and non-profit organizations. energy sectors. Currently I’m deputy head of the SDC Global Programme Water and focal point, represent-ing the Swiss government in several international partnerships while remaining particularly involved in field operations as well as in Swiss political processes.

The raison d'être of the WTD is always questionable. Let's use these 36 hours to do what we cannot do alone, nor on the internet or in our daily work. Something different.

Amanda Loeffen, Waterlex General Manager, Switzerland, [email protected]

As General Manager of WaterLex International Secretariat, I am involved in all of our programmes, ranging from water governance research, to mapping country legal and policy frameworks, and capacity building in the human rights based ap-proach to water management and law reform. It all involves solutions to more sustainable water governance. Previously I was based in New Zealand where I was heavily involved in the changes to water management policies and resource man-

agement through a community funded water project for irrigation and hydro generation. I lead the project management team to research and establish environmental consent. A large part of this role was stake-holder engagement and developing community consultation methodology. My original discipline was science and business orientated, as I studied chemistry and then an MBA in finance. I have worked in busi-ness development in many different resources, water being the key one in the last eight years.

The human right to water is undoubtedly the most important factor in bridging all the other human rights, such as the right to a safe and healthy life, healthy environment, food and work.

Olivier Normand, International Secretariat for Water Associate General Secre-tary/Project Director, Tadjikistan/Uzbekistan, [email protected]

Initially a lawyer and a political scientist (I hold a master in law and a diploma of Science Po Paris) specialised in public opinion polls and surveys I moved 30 years ago to the development field thinking that I would be more useful there than just helping a president to be re-elected or a deputy to regain her/his constituency. I am still extremely interested in all political aspects and love debating about it. I worked primarily in Africa (Gabon, Burundi, Senegal, Ivory Coast) and Asia (Thailand, Viet Nam, Singapore, Hong Kong) using my marketing abilities and the knowledge I had acquired on public opinion. Then I moved, like many, to the Central & Eastern

European Countries (Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Moldova) and the CIS (Russia, Ukraine and finally Tajikistan and Uzbekistan). I am not a specialist of water but I learn every day with the help of the whole water com-munity who has been kind enough to welcome nicely a non-specialist in its circle.

John Nyachieo, SDC Programme Officer, WASH Kenya, [email protected]

I have a master’s degree in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Dares- salaam and have a WASH sector experience of 20 years. I have worked for the government, NGOs, and the private sector in Kenya and my areas of expertise include; Water resources investigations, WASH infrastructure development and WASH sector policy development. In addition, I have supported development of several WASH projects in the Arid and Semi-Arid and peri-urban areas to improve access to WASH services. Currently, am working as a programme officer - Food security facilitating implementation of resilience projects in the ASAL areas of

northern Kenya and Somalia. The resilience capacity building involves improving the Absorptive, adaptive and transformative capacities of the targeted communities.

My expectations for SDC in the next 15 years: focus on water resources management to mitigate against the adverse impacts of climate change; support initiatives for the development of legislative, regulatory and policy frameworks to improve WASH service delivery in the rural areas.

Sergio Perez Leon, SDC - Division Latin America and Caribbean, Program Manager, Water, Climate Change, Switzerland, [email protected]

Hi, I’m Sergio, from Colombia, living and working in Switzerland for the last 4 years. I support the work of SDC’s Regional Cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbe-an (LAC) in issues related to water supply and sanitation, integrated water resource management, and adaptation to climate change. Our programs focus mainly in Bolivia, Nicaragua, Honduras, Haiti and Cuba. We also contribute to initiatives that cover the whole of the LAC region, such as our collaboration with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and their trust fund AquaFund, where we try

and influence the way IDB approaches their water-related operations. Before, I worked for SDC in Colombia on a public-private development project on water footprint. I am a civil engineer with an MBA and studies in international affairs. I am married and the proud father of two children (Emilio, aged 5, and Candelaria, aged 2 and a half).

I am looking forward to exchange ideas and work together with all participants to the WTD, so that by the end of the workshop we all have a common understanding and a shared view on how will the Swiss Cooper-ation contribute to the accomplishment of the Sustainable Development Goal # 6.

Stephanie Piers de Raveschoot, SDC – Tashkent SCO JPO, Uzbekistan, [email protected]

Holding a Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences (EPFL, CH) and a Specialised Masters in International Project Management (ESCP, Fr.), I have worked the last 6 years alternatively for an engineering office in Switzerland as a hydraulics / civil engineer, for a French NGO in Haiti as a WASH programme officer, and in Lesotho for a French consulting office as a hydraulics engineer. Currently a JPO (programme

de relève de la DDC), based in Tashkent until next year, I wish to keep my specialisation within the SDC (if all goes well !).

Between the new SDG Goal 6, and the new orientation for the future of the SDC in general (incl. the New Dispatch and the budget cuts), this is a very crucial period for defining the Swiss presence abroad, and SDC’s development work in particular. I believe this will call for more efficient and innovative approaches to our water-related activities, and to new thoughts on cooperation with other development agencies and the private sector.

Fernando Pililao, SDC Senior Program Officer for AguaSan, Mozambique, [email protected]

I am a Senior Program Officer working for SDC - Maputo Mozambique, since 2006. I have been contributing for the Mozambique Swiss Cooperation Strategy in the trengthening of local governance, through promoting decentralization in one essential service area, namely Water and Sanitation (WatSan). I am responsible to contribute to the conceptualization, design and the implementation of this compo-

nent of the “local Governance” program and for advocating the Swiss position in the respective fora, moni-toring specific Swiss funded activities in this area and advising the Coof on relevant development in the WatSan sector.

I would like to share a presentation on opportunities, challenges and commitments of AguaSan actors in Mozambique toward AguaSan SDG 2030.

Cesarina Quintana Garcia de Paredes, SDC Global Programmes Water Initiatives HUB Lima, Senior National Program Officer, Perú, [email protected]

I work for SDC since 2001; I am economist with experience in rural development and international cooperation. I follow up the SDC water projects (wash rural and payment for watersheds). I am very committed with the WASH a policy dialog and political influence and WATER global agenda in Latin America. One of my great experiences in SDC is to testify the process from pilot project and to become in a

scaling up, ownership and policy influence program. There are still important WASH gaps in Latin America where I am very pleased to facilitate the liaison among the water actors (public, private and civil society) in order to find practical and scaling up solutions to reduce the gaps and promote the implementation of public policies for the sustainable approach and institutional strengthening.

Exchange approaches; discuss about the role of international cooperation on the implementation of the global 2030 agenda taking account the different continent contexts.

Nathalie Rizzotti, SDC Global Programm Water Initatives, Water Policy Advisor Switzerland [email protected]

I am working since 2 years for SDC and the global programme water. I have been involved in the Human right to water and sanitation, the UNECE Water convention amongst other and following part of the advocacy work for a water goal in the 2030 agenda. The success and the agreement on the 2030 agenda for sustainable development has changed the actual paradigm and we managed to get a dedicated

integrated goal on water including aspects of the whole water cycle; moreover water is key in the agenda. I hope that it will help to improve the fragmentation in the water community. As the business is not finished and implementation and follow-up and review will be key to reach this new ambition; I am now involved in the work that Switzerland does regarding the global water architecture to reach this ambition including monitoring and a reflexion on needed institutional structure at the global level.

The WTD is an important moment to meet and network but also to exchange on common challenges and experiences and to bring the water community together. Water management is key to reach a sustainable development and water security, the next 15 years will be crucial.

Douma Yeya, Helvetas, HSI/PHRASEA Expert in Local Governance, Niger, [email protected]

I’m Douma YEYA, from Niger. I work for HELVETAS Swiss Intercooperation (in the Rural Hydraulic Program, funded by SDC), as Local Governance Expert in Dosso’s region. As such, I support decentralized communities (at local and regional levels) to plan, implement and manage investments financed by PHRASEA in WASH sector. It is very motivating to work with local actors (municipalities, government technical services) very mobilized to improve access of populations to safe water and basic

sanitation. But the lack of own resources limit the commitment of the majority of these municipalities.

In my country, the SDC has very a positive image, as a serious partner, whose actions meet the real needs of populations. The following testimony of a traditional chief reflects this perception: "Switzerland Cooperation comes even in the most remote villages to apprehend real problems of the populations and help to solve them." My expectation: For the next 15 years, I hope that the SDC will work more on economic access of rural populations to clean water, notably through political dialogue.

Bekhruz Yodgorov, Oxfam BG office in Tajikistan Network/Partnership Project Officer Tajikistan, [email protected]

My major roles and responsibilities are developing partnership and networking of stakeholders in Tajikistan. Also I am Partnership Leads focal point for MECIS region. The Water Team Days will provide me opportunity to meet with policy makers, researchers, consultants and other water and sanitation specialists with a back-ground in the various sectors.

As the focus of the WTD will be on the assessment and development of practical tools for shaping the MDG period and the new SDGs framework, I would like to share with participants our approaches and activities under the WASH Program in Tajikistan.

Erika Zarate, Torres Good Stuff International, Switzerland, [email protected]

Expert in sustainable water management, water footprint assessments, water for agriculture, water for sustainable livelihoods. Several years of experience in coop-eration projects.

It is fundamental to discuss and offer clear methods/indicators that could support the water for food projects in evaluating their sustainability from the water point of view.

Christian Zurbrügg, Eawag, Senior Researcher, Switzerland, [email protected]

In 1998, I joined the Department of Water and Sanitation in Developing Countries (Sandec), which is now Department Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Devel-opment, at the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) as a tenure track researcher on solid waste management in developing countries. In 2004 I took over the responsibility as head of department Sandec. Since August 2015 I am a member of the Eawag directorate. My research interests are in the interdisciplinary approach of upgrading infrastructure and services in urban areas of low and middle income countries - with a special focus on sanitation, solid waste

and water. I have led several international programs and projects and published many scientific articles and book chapters on appropriate technology and enabling environments in low income settings. I also serve on many international committees, task forces and juries.

Governance is clearly crucial for improvements and sustainable development. BUT do not forget that it also needs technical expertise. Observation from the field is that this is severely lacking.
