Greetings From Will
When I was a kid the first day of May meant many things. My
birthday was close, school would soon be over and finally summer
was almost here. Well now it means that the weather is perfect for
some drive time in your A.
May brings us a a couple of activities that I think you will enjoy. We
have scheduled a "Flash Drive" to the Halftime Grill on 6812 SW

Park 1900 SE 4th in Moore. Club will be cooking hamburgers and
hotdogs. Please bring a side dish to share and your lawn chairs. We
need volunteers to help with the setup and cooking. Regular club

Tiny Tips: Removal of a Two-Piece Distributor Shaft The shaft that runs from the upper shaft to the oil pump drive gear can be hard to remove from the hole in the head down into the block. What works well, if the shaft is not rusted or frozen in, is to take two six-inch blade screw drivers and insert them into the slot in the shaft. Turn the screwdrivers op-posite directions to create a wedge and lift the shaft out of the hole. It is quick, easy and no need to buy that ultra long needle-nose pair of pliers. Submitted by Ted Kuchta, Centerville, Ohio.

Be Sure to Come to the Meetings The meetings are not just about club business such as finances. There are delicious refresh-ments and informative demonstrations. One of the missions of the club is to help new members who might not understand all the systems of the Model A and how to restore and maintain them. In the photos below, Bill Harris explains the intricacies of the Zenith carburetor. Alt-hough it is very simple, one must have some knowledge of the adjustments that must be made to have a smooth running Model A. Bob Bordwine is preparing another demonstra-tion for our May 17 meeting.

Guthrie 89’er Parade April 23
The annual 89er Days Celebration commemorates the Land Run of 1889 and the birth of
Guthrie. On April 22, 1889, tens of thousands of excited Victorian-era land seekers lined the
borders of the Unassigned Lands of central Oklahoma in preparation for the first of five
land runs in the state. At noon, the roar of cannons and blare of bugles along the borders
signaled the start of the mad rush. People on foot, horseback, wagons and trains rushed to
stake their claims. By nightfall, Guthrie had grown from a sparsely inhabited patch of prai-
rie and timber to a bustling tent city of over 10,000 people. The Sooner Model A club was
appropriately named to participate in the annual parade.
The weather was perfect for a parade with temperatures in the high 70s, sunny sky, and a
light breeze. The crowd at Guthrie is always enthusiastic and loves the Model A’s. The
kids keep saying “blow the horn.” Following the parade, most of the club members retired
to “The Stables” for lunch. As you can imagine, the place was packed, but the staff worked
hard to accommodate the crowd. Other club members fled the crowd and went to other
places such as “Braums.”

Model A Gas Mileage Disturbed by reports of poor gas mileage, the (Ford Motor) company reiterated its claim that the Mod-el A Ford's standard carburetors would give 18 to 20 miles to the gallon at a speed of 40 miles an hour and 22 to 25 miles per gallon at 25 miles per hour. In August of 1930, each dealer received a letter about this matter and was asked to invest eight dollars in a testing outfit, so that he could test cars and show the owners that the Model A would give the mileage as claimed or better. In making the tests, he was to check fuel consumption in both directions on the same road checking at both 25 miles per hour and 45 miles per hour. The Payne Motor Company of Washington, North Carolina, ran its tests over a ten day period from November 17 to 27, 1930. Each owner who took the test paid one dollar for a seven-point checkup prior to the test,-He was promised return of the dollar if the .car failed to get 22 miles per gallon. Ten dollars in gold was to be given to the Ford owner getting the most mileage per gallon during the contest. A Zenith Ford carburetor tested accurate to the fraction of a tenth of a mile was installed on each car and a company representative ac-companied the driver during the ten to fifteen minute test. A total of 112 Model A owners participated in the contest. The average miles per gallon registered by the cars was 24 plus. The highest, and consequently the winner of the ten dollars, was thirty miles to the gallon achieved by a Tudor that had been driven 13,489 miles prior to the test. The winning car and driver were fea-tured in an advertisement and local news story following the conclusion of the contest. Another out standing ... performance was that of a contestant who registered 24 miles to the gallon in a car with 48,947 miles on the odometer. The author's experience with Model A's for the past for-ty years makes him doubtful that our 70 plus year old cars can consistently attain gas mileage averaging in the twenties as is reported from 1930. John Hargrave, writ-
ing in The Restorer as Technical Director of M.A.F.C.A. in 1991, says that "There is a 'lot of rubber' in the gaso-line mileage claims of many Model owners!" In his opin-ion, at normal highway speeds, "the average Model A is doing well if it can average 17 to 18 miles per gallon." There you have it from the experts. The moral of the story seems to be "The more you drive your A the better the gas mileage will be." Or, could it be "The more you talk about your A the better your gas mileage will be.” You can be the judge! From Peter Winnewiss's book, The Legendary Model A Ford. From the June 2000 Scuttlebutt.
