  • This spring, two of the InternationalTennis Federation U.S. women’s cupteams were winners because of theroles played by Californians in matches atAntalya, Turkey.

Robin Harris and Carolyn Nichols, teamed with Diane Fishburne and SusanWright, to defeat Australia 3-0 in theWomen’s 50 Bueno Cup final. Kathy BennettDoss and Tina Karwasky, along with KathyBarnes and Mary Ginnard, were responsiblefor the US defeating the Netherlands for theWomen’s 55 Connolly Cup.

“It wasn’t hard to believe that only twoAmerican teams won championships,”Karwasky said. “The European players aremasters at playing on red clay.”

She continued, “We had to play fivematches. It was difficult enough putting theball away on the surface, but add the factthat the balls were heavier than rocks and itis easy to see why things were difficult.”

Fortunately, as Karwasky explained, “Wehad a great team. Everyone got along, andwere so supportive of each other. I haveplayed on a lot of teams and I can't remem-ber one that has had as much fun together. Our strategy was simple – win, but have fun.We did a lot of laughing which loosenedeveryone up. Kathy (Barnes) did a great jobbeing captain.”

The spectacular setting helped. “Theresort was right on the beach (and, at times,

    2

it was quite windy),” Karwasky said “Thepeople were really nice, and the food wasterrific. There were almost 10 entrees everyday in the dining room, and tons of fruits andvegetables. Everything was baked fresh daily(The bread was out of this world.). Thedesserts and pastries, for those with a sweettooth, were too much.”

The size of the resort created a specialfeeling. “There were over 50 courts so wehad a chance to see the other teams playbefore or after our matches,” Karwasky said.“This gave us an opportunity to know ouropponents well, and made the exchange ofgifts, before we played each team, even moremeaningful.”

Though the Men’s 45 Dubler Cup teamdidn’t triumph, Mike Fedderly and Val Wilder,

    Turkish DelightM a r k W i n t e r s

two of the squad’s topperformers, were suc-cessful in the IndividualChampionships followingthe first week of play.Wilder won his third singles title in the lastfour years, and partneredwith Fedderly for theWorld doubles crown, atitle that they have ownedfor some time.

Karwasky concluded,“I, along with all the US players, had a greattime. It was a wonderful experience. I can’twait to go back. (But, next time, I’d like tospend a day shopping in Istanbul.)”

  • Hills will receive a grounds pass so they can attend the event whenthey aren’t competing. Many couples are scheduling their vacationaround the time of the tournament. Because they are, there hasbeen increased interest in local home and condo rentals during thatperiod.”

As is always the case with Solomon tourna-ments, the support is all-star cast strong. BesideCampbell’s and The Tennis Channel, BMW, Diadoraand Hawaiian Airlines will do everything possible,as will the host facility, to make the championshipmemorable.

As Solomon pointed out, “Thewinners will receive round-trip ticketsto Hawaii from Hawaiian Airlines, andfinalists earn a three-day stay at theFairfield Grand Resort in Las Vegas.”

    Another DivisionM a r k W i n t e r s

With the growing popularity of husbandand wife competition across the coun-try, it isn’t surprising that SteveSolomon, along with his wife, Abby, added anotherdivision to The Tennis Channel National Husband &Wife Senior and Super Senior Grass CourtChampionships. In the past, the tournament, pre-sented by Campbell’s at Mission Hill Country Club, had merelyCombo 100 and 120 divisions.

Now, this coming March (the 10th-15th to be exact), there willalso be a Combo 140 gold ball division. “There has been so muchinterest, and the Husband & Wife tournaments have been so suc-cessful, that adding a 140 division was an obvious move,” Solomonsaid. “This year’s draw had some outstanding teams, and we expecteven more players to participate next year because of the addition

of the new division.”He added, “The Tennis Channel

National will again be held duringthe Pacific Life Open MastersSeries. Those playing at Missions
