STAR

OPINION It was fitting that former STAR editor’s John Foster funeral at St Barnabas Church in Ranskill should close with the song New York, New York. The choice of the Frank Sinatra classic was particularly apt in two ways. John, who died at the end of June after a short battle with leukaemia, was a lifelong fan of Rotherham United, whose new stadium was named the New York Stadium when it opened in 2012 after the historic name of the area of the town in which it was built. But perhaps, even more aptly, the song opens with the line “Start spreading the news.” As you will discover inside this month’s edition, John worked as a journalist for more than 40 years until his retirement in 2001, and then devoted much of his time to working on ensuring The STAR came out each month, as it has done since 1984. As his widow Chris put it: “I think he put as much into editing The STAR as he did into the Advertiser.” John’s death has left a big hole to fill in The STAR team. Having lived in Ranskill for more than 30 years, and been a parish councillor and part of the Scarecrow Festival committee, John had his finger on the pulse of what is happening in our villages. Reading this, you may think that there’s plenty happening in the three villages that readers should be aware of and you may consider the things that do get covered are just not that interesting. Unfortunately, there’s only so much time that a dad of three with a full-time job can spend sniffing out the latest local news. Also, The STAR can never be at the cutting edge of the news agenda. After all, it is a parish magazine and the people who help out are purely volunteers. So, in a nutshell, if you think you have a community issue or event that you would like to see in The STAR, then you need to let us know. Just drop us an email at [email protected] and we’ll try and include it in the next edition. But stories are not the only thing that The STAR needs to keep going each month. It might surprise you to know that it’s not particularly cheap to produce a free parish magazine. The committee is grateful for the financial contributions it receives from the parish councils each year, but declining advertising and the ever increasing price of paper means that some months The STAR is operating at a loss. This is something that is not sustainable over the long term, so if any local company has ever considered advertising or would be able to donate some paper, then now is the time to get in touch. It would mean a lot to John to know that The STAR’s future is in safe hands for another 34 years.

Editor NotesDear Readers,We present the first STAR newspaper for 2020 and wish you a belated Happy New Year.Since there was no issue for January, this edition proves to be rather full of saved-up information. Whilst we have much content regarding events that have happened, we also have much regarding upcoming ones.Of particular relevance to Ranskill villagers is the first Public Consultation to discuss potential future housing development. This will take place Wednesday 4th March at Ranskill Bowls Club, Station Road.

2.00 to 4.30pm : tea, coffee & cake6.00 to 8.00pm : cheese & wine

Further details may have been received by you in the form of a flyer already. Those who have not received one can see the map of sites on page 5. The Torworth and Ranskill Village Festival Committee would welcome more volunteers. The Scarecrow event won’t be happening this year (see p25) as it takes a deal of coordination, and volunteers are rather thin on the ground. Scarecrows are much welcomed for the festival dates, but won’t be judged this year.Bawtry Phoenix Theatre would like more members, and Ranskill Bowls Club would like to welcome more of the locals into its premises for social bowling. We live in a wonderful area and any time that can be offered to these groups would benefit others. This could be on a committee level or a personal one to anyone who has a little time to spare, or who seeks companionship and purpose.Whilst other groups have not issued specific invitations to volunteer, they are doubtless willing and able to receive more from the locale. See page 4 for upcoming events.

THE MAYFLOWER – RANSKILL PARK’S LATEST ADDITION

As you will have seen if you have visited Ranskill Park recently a giant children’s play ship – named The Mayflower – has been installed as part of the Parish Council’s ongoing commitment to improve the park’s facilities, and also to help celebrate local ties with the Mayflower Pilgrims. Many of the most influential Pilgrims who sailed to America on the Mayflower were from North Nottinghamshire and the surrounding area.

The ship was funded by 50/50 by Ranskill Parish Council and Nottinghamshire County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme and the ship was officially opened on Thanksgiving Day by Councillor John Handley, Notts County Council Vice-Chairman of the Communities and Place Committee and Tracey Taylor Ranskill’s County Councillor along with members

of the Parish Council and pupils from Ranskill Primary School.

The Parish Council believe that the ship is a great addition to the park and are already investigating the next proposed improvement, a replacement for the roundabout which they are hoping to be able to fund in the coming financial year.

Ranskill Bowls Club See article on page 19 for details of opening times and its upcoming AGM.The Club would very much like to welcome new members. The atmosphere and camaraderie at the Club is warm and welcoming.

There are bowls to borrow. All that are essential are clean flat soled shoes. Give it a whirl. The Club is also a wonderful venue for a social event. It has all the necessary facilities and can seat quite a number. This might be ideal for a christening celebration, meeting room or a regular venue for a group.Contact Simon for more information

Christian Perspective How has your 2020 started out; what are you working on this year? I’m finding out how to re-main joyful in faith when life seems hard and burdensome.

Whether our problems are health-related, struggles in rela-tionships, money difficulties, or any other circumstances that weigh us down, all bring things that are hard to deal with and can steal our joy. We all have many different burdens to carry, but as Christians, we do not have to carry our burdens alone. I’ve been struck by some verses in Paul’s letter to the peo-ple in Philippi, chapter 4, where he writes from verse 4: ‘Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!’ It’s a command!

But how is it possible to live re-joicing, when there are things that weigh us down? Paul goes on to write: ‘Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near.’ We have a faithful God who never lets us down, and never leaves us. Even when we are not conscious of his pres-ence, his Word tells us that he is near, he has not abandoned us, and never will when we put our trust in him. There is more help as we read on in verse 6: ‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, pre-sent your requests to God.’ So, we can bring everything that happens to us, or around us, to this faithful God in prayer, not forgetting to thank him for the good things, of which there are also always many. Paul goes on to explain there is a promise at-tached to coming to God in this way: ‘And the peace of God, which transcends all understand-ing, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.’ It’s a sure and certain promise of peace beyond understanding, which will guard both our hearts and our minds, when we put all our struggles in God’s hands in the name of Jesus Christ. Paul finishes this passage with more helpful advice. In verse 8 he writes: ‘Finally, broth-ers and sisters, whatever is true,

noble, right, pure, lovely, whatev-er is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.’ It matters what we set our minds on. If we keep on chewing over and over our struggles, they will dominate us; but if we choose to look at these joyful and admirable things around us in the light of this verse, we will have renewed minds. And Paul continues in verse 9: ‘Put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.’

So, as we go on together into this year, join me in working on these things. Look again at Philippians chapter 4 and find things to rejoice in; bring your troubles to God with thanksgiving and receive his peace. May God bless you in doing it. Brenda Critchley

Puzzle for February 2020

Sudoku is a number placement puzzle. The aim of Sudoku is to complete the grid by entering numbers from 1 to 9 in each empty cell of the 9×9 grid which comprises 9 sub-grids each with 9 cells in a 3×3 pattern. Each row, column and sub-grid must contain only one instance of each number. There are variants of Sudoku. In this puzzle there are 9 shaded cells, one in the centre of each sub-grid. These shaded cells must also contain the numbers 1 to 9. The solution is included elsewhere in the STAR.

Garden Bird of the MonthThe Great Tit

The Great Tit is a rather handsome and colourful bird, and is the largest member of the Tit family. Its back is green, turning blue-grey towards the rump and wings. The crown, nape and throat are black and the cheeks are white. The crown is quite glossy in the male of the species. The breast and belly are yellow with a black stripe running down the centre. Both sexes are similar but the black stripe of the male is broader than that of the female and reaches all the way down to the legs. It is believed the broader the stripe of the male, the better parent he will be and this, of course, makes him more attractive to prospective mates.Primarily a woodland bird, this species has adapted well to gardens and parkland. It nests in the holes of trees or walls and will quite readily take to nest boxes. It will take seed, peanuts and

suet from bird feeders and tables especially during the winter months and because of its size, the Great Tit can be a bit of a bully towards smaller birds and may dominate at these feeding stations. The Great Tit is considered to be an intelligent bird and will learn tasks quite easily. Some of you may remember the time when milk was more regularly delivered to the door. The Great Tit was one species which soon recognised this was an excellent food source and consequently it learnt to peck the foil cap and sip the cream from the top of the bottle. It is also known to follow Coal

Tits and steal seed from their caches. There is obviously more to this bird than we think.

Church Notices February

FINGERPOST INAUGURATION

On a wet Tuesday afternoon in late November a small group gathered to mark the placing of a finger sign post.

This was outside the Pilgrim Fathers Public House on the Great North Road in Scrooby. The purpose of the post is to indicate a central point in North Nottinghamshire from where the “Pilgrim Fathers” originated with other important places from where the Pilgrims came and to where they went. The local villages of Austerfield, Sturton-le-Steeple and Babworth as well as Retford, Gainsborough and Worcester are signed. Their temporary places of refuge, Boston, Leiden, Harwich, Rotherhithe, Southampton, Dartmouth, Plymouth, and their final

destinations in the New World are also included - Plymouth, Boston, Provincetown, Mass. and Farmers Branch, TexasJoining four members of the Parish Council and two costumed Pilgrims from Retford Museum were (from left) John Stirland who provided the Mayflower Apple tree, Neil Taylor, CEO of BDC, Liam, landlord of the Pilgrim Fathers, Simon Greaves, leader of BDC and Jack Bowker, the BDC Councillor for Scrooby. Coincidentally, just as the photographs were being taken a group came out of the Pilgrim

Fathers after having enjoyed lunch. A brief enquiry ascertained that they were visiting Americans, one of whom just happened to come from Farmers Branch, Texas, Worksop’s twin town in the USA.

No flights from Flybe or its successor have been announced, Nor is there any news about any possible replacements if these are lost routes.

Winter 2020/21

TUI have now announced further expansion at the airport with the addition of an extra aircraft operating from the airport for its winter 2020/21 programme. An extra 74,000 seats will be added as a result including a new route to Cape Verde. New winter destinations will also include Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh and Fuerteventura. Additional flights to Cancun (Mexico) and Sanford (USA) will now take place in March and April 2021. This announcement allows more Yorkshire based passengers to fly locally rather than having to travel over the Pennines on congested transport networks.

TUI have done short break holidays to Lapland during December and these will continue in 2020.

Thera are also two Caribbean flights to either join a Marella cruise ship or take an island holiday. These will be to Barbados 10th to 24th January and Jamaica 23rd February until 9th March 2021.

This company does several holidays to Lapland during winter, from day trips to a week including visits to see Santa and the Northern Lights.

This is a company that is advertising Lapland holidays from the airport for the first time.

Summer 2021

TUI have also released flights for summer 2021 and for now are the same as 2020.

However, the death of Bella means Hector now has to look after Ricky, and they didn’t get along too well. Moreover, her death causes Child Services to decide to send Ricky back to the orphanage. Orphaned, penniless but ambitious and with a mind crammed with imagination and fresh ideas, the American Phineas Taylor Barnum will always be remembered as the man with the gift to effortlessly blur the line between reality and fiction. Thirsty for innovation and hungry for success, the son of a tailor will manage to open a wax museum but will soon shift focus to the unique and peculiar, introducing extraordinary, never-seen-before live acts on the circus stage. Some will call Barnum’s wide collection of oddities, a freak show; however, when the obsessed showman gambles everything on the opera singer Jenny Lind to appeal to a high-brow audience, he will somehow lose sight of the most important aspect of his life: his family. Will Barnum risk it all to be accepted?Director: Michael GraceyStars: Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams, Zac EfronCertificate:PG. Running time: 105 minutes

Illegal Parking on Station Road RanskillThere is a persistent issue with obstructive, inconsiderate and dangerous parking outside the shops on Station Road. This continues despite single and double yellow line restrictions and regular attendance of Parking Enforcement Officers. As a result, the Parish Council have asked Nottinghamshire County Council, who are the authority responsible for Highways, to look again at further measures which could be taken to stop those individuals who insist on breaking the law. The County Council have been asked to review the implementation of red line parking zones and cameras to prevent illegal parking and bollards to prevent parking on the pavement. Many residents seem to be confused about who is the responsible authority for parking issues. Ranskill Parish Council is not responsible for parking enforcement. To clear up any doubt:• If a vehicle is causing an obstruction, then

this is a Police problem and we would urge you to call 101 and get the incident logged or report it online via the Notts Police website https://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/do-it-online/report-online

• The only way that we can get more police presence for this issue is to build up a body of evidence by logging incidents with them.

• Other parking issues (for instance a vehicle parked on double yellow lines) are a civil parking matter and are the responsibility of the County and District Councils operating under the umbrella of the Notts Parking Partnership Enforcement team. The Parish

Council continue to work to ensure their Parking Enforcement Officers regularly attend Station Road, but resources are finite with only 20 officers to cover the whole of Nottinghamshire.

• Bassetlaw District Council have a local parking manager to whom you can report illegal parking problems by telephone on 0115 804 8309. You can find more details on the Nottinghamshire County Council website: https://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/transport/parking/notts-parking-partnership

If like us you have been subject to verbal abuse when asking inconsiderate drivers to move their cars, then please log the incident with the police by calling 101 or report it online via the Notts Police website https://www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/do-it-online/report-online. This again contributes to building up evidence for more regular police presence in the area. The Parish Council will continue to facilitate the involvement of the relevant responsible authorities, unfortunately any further action is out of our hands. We hope that the County Highways Department may be able to provide further safety measures, but in the meantime please log issues whenever you are able.If you have any ideas or solutions to alleviate this issue please let the Parish Council have your thoughts by email at [email protected], we welcome any useful feedback.Ranskill Parish Council

Fly TippingRanskill

Fly tipping around Ranskill (particularly on the Access Lane over the crossing at the end of Station Road) is an ongoing problem. If you come across fly tipping you can report it directly to Bassetlaw District Council.

www.bassetlaw.gov.ukYou will find an option on its home page under the heading “Report a Problem” to “Report fly tipping” or by calling them on

01909 534 501 If you actually witness the fly tipping taking place or if you can see any evidence in what has been tipped that indicates who may

have carried it out, then you should call the Bassetlaw Environmental Health Department via the Bassetlaw main number

01909 533 533 and ask for Environmental Health.

Scrooby Memories byDick Brown

As we approach the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower, and the events which are planned to commemorate it, I’m taken back to the summer of 1970 and my memories of two happenings in Scrooby in which I played a part – the Scrooby First Day Cover and the combined Village Fête. My memories may – almost certainly will – differ from those of others who were living in the village then, and may still be today. It would be good to share them.Back in the late 1960’s, my then parents-in-law, Arnie and Winnie Shield, bought the row of three old cottages on Low Road, which they renovated and eventually renamed ‘The Old Forge’. The cottages needed a fair bit of work done on them before they could be lived in. My wife and I were living and teaching in Grimsby at the time, but we regularly came to the village with our three children, spent several holidays being brickie’s mate, roofer’s mate and general handyman until the house was ready – and spending relaxing after-work sessions in the

George and Dragon, the pub which was then at the end of Low Road. Not long after my parents-in-law had moved to the village, my wife and I got jobs at Retford High School, and in one of those fortunate coincidences, a house in Scrooby came on the market. We bought, renovated, and moved into ‘Belmont’, on the corner of Church Lane and Chapel Lane, opposite the house now called ‘The Old Vicarage’, but which was then popularly known as ‘Brewster’s Cottage’. Brewster certainly lived in Scrooby, but in the Manor House, not in the eponymous cottage.1970 marked the 350th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower. Fifty years ago, Britain had a much lower-profile ‘heritage’ industry, and fewer events were celebrated to the extent they are today. Apart from the happenings in Plymouth, little was organised nationally to commemorate the momentous events of 1620. What went on in Scrooby, Babworth and Austerfield were minute by comparison

– and relatively insignificant then compared with what is being planned for the 400th anniversary in 2020.However, Scrooby knew that 1970 was significant. The village had always had a small but regular trickle of American visitors – rather more than usual that year – but there was nothing for them to particularly focus on, apart from the rather photogenic timber-framed ‘Brewster’s Cottage’. Scrooby’s American connection was taken for granted as an historical fact, but nothing to make a big song and dance about. But the Parish Council decided that 1970 marked a good opportunity to sing and dance a bit. A small committee was formed to commemorate the 350th anniversary in the village, and I was asked if I would like to join. The committee had twin aims: to celebrate Scrooby and William Brewster’s part as an elder of the Mayflower ‘pilgrims’, and to use the occasion to raise awareness of the village and to raise funds towards renovating or replacing the village hall.

This is part 1 of Dick’s reminisces. Part 2 will follow in

the March issue

Nottinghamshire Wildlife TrustNorth Notts Local Group Talks

Delving into Lichens, is the title of our February talk which will be given by Peter Crittenden, Emeritus Professor of Plant and Microbial Ecology at Nottingham University. Peter has done an immense amount of research into aspects of these fascinating plants. His talk will provide an overview of lichens, their structure, diversity, identification and ecological significance. Their famed sensitivity to air pollution will be discussed including lichen response to the current pollution climate. Peter will bring some specimens with him to display, including some exotic species. He will also bring books for identification. If you’ve ever looked at a lichen and wondered how it can possibly survive just sited on a stone or some other equally inhospitable object, or

Treasure uncovered in Scrooby Pinfold Wall

Observant Scrooby dwellers may have noticed some renovation work taking place at the Pinfold late last year. Thanks to Nottinghamshire County Council’s Historic Buildings team, funding was found to carry out some urgently needed repairs to the Grade II listed interior and exterior Pinfold walls.

Members of the garden club helped over a two week period to chip out the old lime mortar, clean the stonework and replace with new lime mortar mixed and applied on site.

The corner of the Pinfold, close to the gate, was leaning outward and it was decided this part of the wall needed taking down and rebuilding. It was then that the ‘treasure’ was uncovered.A pewter shot cup was found pushed into the old lime mortar. It had been deliberately crushed to fit into the wall. When it was put there was a mystery, maybe when the Pinfold was first constructed or during a subsequent repair. After enquiries were made to the Victoria and Albert museum, it transpires that this is a German made shot cup, and helpfully the V and A were able to give the history of the manufacturers, who began making these items around 1860.

Engraved around the sides of the cup are three Dutch Old Masters paintings, all dating back to the 1600s, could this be a link to the Pilgrim Fathers’ flight to Holland?

Images shown are of an undamaged shot cup showing engraved paintings by Rembrandt, Self Portrait with Saska (top) Jan Steen, The Dancing Lesson (bottom).Jason Mordan, Chief Historic Building Conservation Officer who led the project said “It is not at all unusual to find items deliberately concealed during building works. However, it is much more complicated to work out why! These deliberate ‘offerings’ are part of a wider ritualistic behaviours that included what have become known as ‘witch/es marks’, and usually found around inglenooks, fireplaces, doors and windows and anywhere there might be a draft associated with ‘bad spirits’The Garden Club have purchased an undamaged shot cup and both will be displayed in the village hall for all to enjoy.Work on the Pinfold and church walls will resume in spring as part of a general village improvement plan. This will include a Pilgrim Fathers’ associated sculpture . 2020 is going to be a busy year in Scrooby and the village will look a little smarter when all the work is completed!

A jolly ‘good’ show from Ranskill Primary School

Class 1 and Class 2 enjoyed a visit from Helen Turton, a real-life polar explorer. Everybody learned lots and lots about how to keep warm. There was a fabulous array of stockings made for the Christmas stocking event. It was lovely to hear the reasons why the children had madestockings for members of the community

Ranskill Ramblingsby Peter Parkin

Having lived in the village all my life I thought it might be interesting for others to hear of what happened in Ranskill years ago. As I am at least the fourth generation of my family to live near the village crossroads I thought I ought to jot a few things down.I was born in 1938 and grew up in an era when there were few telephones, television was only just getting into its stride and the internet and texting were unheard of. If you wanted to send a message to get there earlier than the post the next day you had to send a telegram. This meant going to a Post Office writing the message on a form and paying so much per word. This would then be sent to the P O nearest to the addressee and then delivered.Depending how busy everyone was along the line it would usually be within 2-3 hours. As my father took over the village PO in 1950 I often used to get the job of delivering telegrams and it could be very interesting at times. The worst time was when it was an unexpected death message, I used to start by saying I have some bad news for you would you like to go inside and sit down. You had to wait until they had read it in case they wanted to send a reply, thankfully not many did.If it was a special occasion like a birthday or a wedding you could pay extra and have it delivered on a larger fancy form and envelope. In 1967 my father retired and I took on the PO at this time the village mail was brought from Retford to us at 6.40am and was then sorted and delivered. As the village grew in the late sixties and early seventies delivering took longer. One day Colonel Brown who lived on Blyth Road, discovered that all the members of his Lindrick Golf Club got

their mail earlier than he did. He complained and my delivery staff was doubled to two.In 1992 a new delivery office was built in Retford and all rural deliveries were made from there.I think my recollection of the village should be done road by road always starting from the crossroads.

This is part 1 of Peter’s reminisces. Part 2 will follow in the March issue

Due to prudent management of funds councillors agreed that it would not be necessary to request an increase in council tax funding from Bassetlaw District Council. This means that the portion of your council tax which you pay to the Parish Council will not increase this year.

FINANCE Bank balances at 31st December 2019: current account £100, reserve account £64054.79 (includes restricted CIL and Neighbourhood Plan funds). The following payments were approved:

North Notts Landscapes Replacement of timbers on zip wire ramp plus grass cutting October 2019 £558.00

Councillors agreed a request from Ranskill and Torworth Festival Committee to fund the rental of toilets for the village festival again this year.

PLANNING A new planning application 19/01653/FUL to erect 20 dwellings on land south of Ranskill churchyard on Great North Road was discussed by councillors. This application involves both Ranskill and Torworth villages as the site is within Ranskill’s parish boundary but it is adjacent to Torworth village. After discussion councillors agreed to object to the application on the grounds that by building on the limited stretch of green space between Ranskill and Torworth this development will lead to the erosion of the separate identities of the two villages. Councillors also agreed that 20 houses on the proposed site is too many and as the site is not within easy walking distance of any local amenities this will add yet more pressure to the traffic and parking problems around the school, shops and traffic lights. The site is also outside of the designated Ranskill development boundary.

RANSKILL PARK Maintenance work on the zip wire should be complete by the time you receive this newsletter. This has included replacing the wooden slats on the ramp, replacing the trolley mechanism and having the wire re-tensioned. Having reviewed quotations from four providers the Parish Council have agreed to replace the safety surfacing under both sets of swings. In recent years this has been patched a number of times but has now got to the stage where it needs to be completely replaced. All efforts will be made to minimise disruption for park users. The toddler swing seat which was damaged as a result of the fire brigade having to cut a non-toddler out of the seat has been replaced by the Parish Council at a cost of £125. Please note: The toddler equipment is for toddlers only!

NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN The public consultation on sites for possible development will be held on 4th March at the Bowls Club. Please see the flyer included in this newsletter for details, this is a drop-in event so you can pop in (and out) of the two sessions – one in the afternoon and one in the evening – at your convenience. It is really important that as many residents as possible attend. This is your opportunity to have your say on future development in the village.

RANSKILL PARISH COUNCIL MEETING The next Parish Council Meeting will be held at St Barnabas Church on Tuesday 11th February at 7:30pm

Members of the public and press are welcome to attend. Parish Clerk: Mel Malcolm 07584 169028 or [email protected]
