A Return to Grace: Luther’s Life and Legacy
Sunday, October 1
6:30 pm
Trinity/St. Luke’s Western Avenue Gymnasium
(Dessert Potluck from 6 – 6:30 pm)
Pioneers
The next regularly scheduled Pioneers’ meeting will be on Tuesday, October 3 from 6:30-8 pm. The meeting will be held at the TSL Clark Street campus. The Pioneers will be going on a night hike. Participants are asked to dress accordingly and bring a flashlight.
Our Practice of Close Communion
We believe from Acts 2:42 and 1 Corinthians 10:16-17 that Holy Communion is the highest expression of our fellowship with Jesus and with each other, and that God intends the sacrament to be celebrated together by Christians who accept all the teachings of the Bible. If you are a guest and are not yet a member of the WELS/ELS fellowship, we invite you to learn more about us and, most of all, about the Savior whom God has sent. Then join with us at his communion table. To learn more about our faith and fellowship, speak with Pastor Brauer or Pastor Yahnke.
Personal preparation for Holy Communion can be found on page 156 in front of the hymnal.
Communion in Front Rows If you are unable to walk up to the rail for Communion, you may be seated in one of the
front pews during the service. The pastors and elder will come down to the front pews to distribute Communion.
Luther Movie
Today in worship we continue viewing segments of the new Luther movie. A full-length version of the film, which is entitled A Return to Grace: Luther's Life and Legacy, will be shown at Trinity (the Western Avenue campus) on Sunday evening, October 1. The movie will begin at 6:30 pm, but join us for a dessert potluck at 6 pm.
Senior Choir Schedule
The Senior Choir will once again glorify Christ and proclaim his Gospel in song. The first scheduled singing date is October 1 for the 10:30 service. Practices are held on Tuesday evenings at 7 pm. Anyone may participate to glorify Christ for his grace and mercy! If you have any questions, you may contact the director, Naomi Fritz.

Our Ministry at Trinity
On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted 95 theses upon a church door in Wittenberg, Germany. Since then the world has never been the same. To celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, please join us for a one-night screening of "A Return to Grace: Luther's Life and Legacy".
Reformation 500
In 2017 we are marking an anniversary number that none of us could achieve in a lifetime: five hundred. The number takes us back to 1517, the traditional year marking the beginning of the Lutheran Reformation. We thank Christ for all he accomplished, and still accomplishes, through the Lutheran Reformation. Our congregation will be marking the five hundredth anniversary of the Reformation in several ways:
Services beginning after Labor Day (and running through October) will have Reformation themes that highlight the blessings Christ gives us as Lutherans. We will incorporate video clips from the Luther movie (A Return to Grace) with comments by WELS scholars.
Sunday Bible classes in October will study Reformation-based themes with longer clips from the Luther movie.
We will mark the five hundredth anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation in our services on October 29. Trinity members are invited to attend the Western Wisconsin District Reformation service in Madison on October 29 at 4:00 (to be held at the Alliant Energy Center).
Members will be encouraged to participate in spiritual growth efforts starting this fall. During the month of October we will make available a reading/prayer plan utilizing Luther’s Small Catechism. Beginning in November, we will promote reading the New Testament.
We intend to show the full-length Luther movie A Return to Grace in a large-group setting this fall. The tentative arrangement is viewing the movie on October 1 at the
Western Avenue gymnasium, starting at 6:30. Stay tuned for more details.
Ushers for District Reformation Service The district Reformation service will be held at the Alliance Center in Madison on October
29 at 4:00. There is a need for ushers for the service. Anyone who is interested may contact Professor Emeritus Roger Kobleske at [email protected].
Six Flags Trip A fall trip to Six Flags is scheduled on Saturday, October 7 for Trinity Teens. We will leave
from Trinity at 9am. Tickets can be purchased online for $50. All teens interested in attending need to register with Pastor Yahnke in order to provide adequate transportation. Transportation cannot be guaranteed if you do not register in time. Please text or email Pastor Yahnke at [email protected] or 414-614-0077 on or before Sunday, October 1.
Greeter’s Schedule The next greeter’s schedule is available on the table in the narthex.
Forward in Christ
The October issue of Forward in Christ is available to subscribers in the Fireside Room. This is the last issue of the current subscription year.
Church Secretary Position
Kathy Strucely, who has served as church secretary since 2011, will be leaving this fall. The congregation is seeking a replacement. This is a summary of qualifications and duties for the position:
Understanding of the mission of Trinity and a high regard for the Gospel ministry; Trustworthy and confidential; Able to work in cooperation with the pastors and the congregational leaders; Skillful in using the computer and church-related software; Preparation of the bulletin and service folders; Preparation of the newsletter; Recordkeeping and various secretarial tasks; Assistance to the church treasurer; Other miscellaneous duties as agreed upon by the secretary, church leaders and
pastors. The hours will range from fifteen to twenty per week. Applications are available at the
church office. The deadline for submitting an application is Monday, October 9. For more information, contact Russ Marcks or Bill Nass.
Reading Luther’s Small Catechism
A devotional reading of Luther's Small Catechism is now available for members to follow during the month of October. It will be an opportunity to grow in faith in Christ and in knowledge of the Scripture's teachings. All members are encouraged to participate!
TSL and the WPCP
Over the past months information on our school's possible involvement in the Wisconsin Parental Choice Program (WPCP) has been presented to our congregational members through the newsletter and voters' meetings. The time is quickly coming then the congregation will need to make a decision on whether TSL should be involved with this program perhaps beginning in the 2018-2019 school year.
To provide further information and give an opportunity to ask questions Mr. Moeller has put together a Power Point presentation that provides information and answers questions you might have. The presentation will take place at the following dates and locations: Saturday, September 30 - 11:00 am at Trinity - Conference Room Sunday, October 1 – 11:30 am at St. Luke's - School Commons Wednesday, October 4 - 7:30 pm at Trinity - Conference Room Thursday, October 12 - 8:00 pm at St. Luke's - School Commons Saturday, October 14 - 11:00 am at St. Luke's - School Commons Sunday, October 29 - 11:45 am at Trinity - Conference Room
All of our congregational members are encouraged to attend one of the meetings at either congregation to learn more about the program and ask questions. We look forward to seeing you there.
