Olivier, a French university student, talks about learning English and the difficulties he has.Listen and try the comprehension activity below.
$ started learning English about +err ten years ago and $ think $%(e learned 'uite a lot. $ cantalk about 'uite a few sub*ects and $ can understand 'uite well when people talk to me in
English. ,t uni(ersity $ mostly learn business words. $ think it%s important because $ won%tlearn these words anywhere else. $t%s not by meeting other young people that $ will learnbusiness words. ,lthough it%s true that $ do learn them too by reading on my own.
$ $ would really like to become fluent and +err $ don%t like ha(ing to look for my words.Maybe one day $ could think in English- !hy not- $%m interested in grammar but it%s not mypriority. $t%s not the most important thing $ think the most important thing for me is +err tobe understood well and to ha(e good (ocabulary. Many words for explaining many things. $fyou can say what you want to say it%s +err it%s +err the important point.
My biggest problem is $ don%t know enough words. $ often repeat the same words. $ find it
difficult if $%m talking to someone about a sub*ect that $ don%t know. $ *ust don%t ha(e thewords $ need to explain what $ want to say. $t%s (ery frustrating and err $ (ery 'uickly don%t
know +err what to say. $f we%re talking about music or something like that then it%s noproblem. My teacher tells me $ need to expand my (ocabulary range.
!hen $ am writing letters $ ha(e lots of (ocabulary. $ find+ $ ha(e learnt the correctexpressions for application letters or /0s so $ find them easy now. To impro(e my (ocabulary $

try to read a lot too. Sometimes $ read English magaines about music because $ lo(e listeningto English music and ,merican music. $ also read 2ritish newspapers but because +err $take the time to read $ find it easier than speaking.
,nother problem $ ha(e is remembering words. Sometimes $ hear a word $ don%t understand
and ask the person the person who said it to tell it to me again. The problem is about fi(eminutes later $ ha(e already forgotten the word. 2ut+ $+ !ell $ don%t know what to do about
this problem. Maybe $ don%t listen well enough. $%m maybe concentrating on understanding themain point of the con(ersation that $ forget the you know indi(idual words. $ think you need
to hear words lots of different times to really remember new ones.
$n the future $ would like to speak more fluently and to know lots of (ocabulary on manydifferent sub*ects. $ ha(e started making my own dictionary and so now when $ hear a newword $ write it down and try to use it (ery soon after. $ hope this is going to help me impro(e
my English (ocabulary. $%m certainly moti(ated to learn more words.
