____ IMAGINING THE WORST-CASE SCENARIOby Rabbi Alon Levkovitz

As I was impatiently waiting for Hurricane Dorian to choose its final path, I read the weekly portion, Shoftim, in preparation for the following Shabbat’s sermon. With the storm and its potentially devastating outcome in mind, the ancient text presented itself in a new light.

The end of Shoftim talks about a situation in which a slain person was discovered in a field and the murderer could not be found. The Torah does not simply file it as a “cold case” hoping for some future detectives to solve the crime. Instead, the Torah presents a seemingly peculiar ritual: The elders and magistrates of the town closest to the location of the victim break the neck of a young heifer, wash their hands over its body and declare: “Our hands did not shed this blood, nor did our eyes see it done.”

This ritual is the origin of the idiom “wash one’s hands,” which means to absolve oneself of responsibility. The rabbis in the Talmud explain that no one suspects that the leaders commit the murder. By washing their hands, they convey that they are not only legally innocent but morally as well. They affirm that

there was nothing they could have done to prevent this crime. For example, they testify that they did not see the victim about to leave their city in the dark without warning him of the danger and offering him shelter for the night. It seems that the Torah is more concerned about their moral responsibility than their judicial responsibility.

When it seemed like the hurricane was heading our way, most of us acted responsibly. We left work early (which was exceedingly inconvenient that day), put up the shutters, and filled the cars with gas. Now imagine, that on your 11th trip to Publix to load up on more batteries and snacks, you noticed that the house down the road doesn’t have shutters on its non-impact-glass windows. It gets you mad. You cannot decide if that house’s residents are arrogant, cocky, careless, or all of the above. On your way back from the store you consider for a second to stop by and see if they need help, but quickly decide against it. After all, they are probably binge-watching Netflix and eating undeserved snacks; exactly what you were planning to do in your fortified castle.

However, before you open your bag of chips and ask your kids for the Netflix password, I want to reintroduce the concept of “pre-mortem”, imagining the worst-case scenario resulted from your actions or the lack of them. Assume that Dorian did hit and the people in the unprotected house got hurt.

How would you feel then? Would you be able to wash your hands of it, feeling neither guilt nor responsibility? Afterall, you took care of your own family and even helped your in-laws. You are not in charge of the whole neighborhood’s safety…right?

Or you may think, if I only knew that the residents were not lazy, but an elderly couple who were too embarrassed to ask for help; or they were a family who just moved to Florida and didn’t really understand what to do with the metal pieces in their garage (just like you didn’t 10 years ago); or perhaps, the person in the house who normally takes care of its hurricane preparation was ill? Would you feel bad for not calling Paul and Howard with whom you could have done the job in less time than it took you to watch one episode of Breaking Bad, or are you going to be fine with your decision?

The Torah knew that after a person is murdered there is nothing to do to reverse it, but it wanted to help us avoid regret after the fact. When we witness a potentially dangerous situation, it is easy to rationalize why we should not get involved, and therefore this is exactly when we must honestly ask ourselves if we would be able to wash our hands of it should a disaster strikes. A human court may acquit us from moral responsibility, but on Yom Kippur we are standing before the heavenly court and we must be prepared.

I had an amazing trip to Germany with my oldest son Steven this past summer and wanted to tell you about some of the things I found interesting that relate to Judaism. First of all, Germany wasn’t on the top of my list of countries I wanted to go to, but since I was travelling with my 38-year-old son who has gone wherever I have chosen in the past, I felt obliged. I think his reason for choosing Germany was really for the beer, though he arranged most of the tours we enjoyed, and how surprised I was by what I heard. We started in Munich, which is in southern Germany in the region known as Bavaria where the Third Reich started. The first tour we went on, which was a walking tour of Munich, dove right into the Nazis and how they

treated the Jewish population, and others. We then took a tour of Dachau Concentration Camp where we also learned more about the tragedy of our people. Whether we were in Munich, Nuremberg, or Cologne, we were amazed by our tour guides who were so open with us when questions were asked about how and why Germans could have allowed some of the events of the last century to occur.

When we met Germans in beer gardens and restaurants, or out and about as we walked the streets (my son is just like me and tends to get into conversations with anyone and everyone) we would also ask questions of them about their feelings towards Jews, and the history there. And again we were astonished as to how open they were. The consensus among everyone we spoke to was that anti-semitism has no place in German society, even though it is growing today.

I was so impressed with the Germany that I visited, and how its people were so open with their past.

I was surprised to leave there and feel so much more positive about the country that has so reversed its direction. And their openness reminded me about whether it be there or here, how important it is to educate our youth about the past, and of the place that anti-semitism held then, and holds in a very different way, today.

So as I write this Scribe article, it is the middle of September before the High Holy Days and you are most likely reading this right before Rosh Hashanah. I would like to wish you and you family a wonderful, sweet new year and say that if I don’t run into you at services for Rosh Hashanah to personally talk, please let’s do it at Yom Kippur.

Temple Beth Am is hosting this year’s Thanksgiving Eve Interfaith Service on Wednesday, November 27. As is our custom, we would like to offer our friends and neighbors home-baked cookies after we pray

together. We’re expecting a crowd of over 1,000 people and are hoping to be able to serve traditional

Jewish treats like rugelach, macaroons, and hamantaschen, plus a variety of other cookies.

IT’S COOKIE TIME!

If you enjoy baking and would like to participate, please email Gali at [email protected] for specific instructions.

____ NEW YEAR, NEW WAYS TO GET INVOLVEDby Danna Cohen, Executive Director

With the new year under way, the clergy and staff of Temple Beth Am are hard at work to bring a variety of programs, services, and events to our congregation and community, but we could use your help. We have needs for volunteers in a number of areas. Please take a look at the list below and contact me if you are able to contribute your time, we’ll add you to our list, and contact you when the need arises!

Front desk reception: Sometimes our administrative assistant has the day off, or needs to attend a training or meeting and someone needs to cover the desk. If you like people and are available for 2 hours during the day to answer phones and buzz people in the front door, this job is for you!

Kitchen crew: During holidays and special events we often have dinners or serve food. If you know your way around a kitchen we would love your help cooking or prepping the meal!

Welcome ambassadors: Are you friendly and love to meet people? We always have a need for more welcome ambassadors. Potential tasks include arriving 30 minutes before services to help greet people, and reaching out to new members in order to help them settle into our community!

Service rideshare: We have elderly members who cannot drive at night, but would love to attend Services once in a while. If you are coming anyway and live in their neighborhood and would be willing to give someone a ride to Temple, let us know and we will connect you!

Office assisting: A few times a year we send out mass mailings, or make phone calls to our entire congregation. If you are willing to help let us know and we will put you to work!

Garden cleanup: Did you know Temple Beth Am has a beautiful

garden right behind the playground? Our garden produces herbs and vegetables used at the Temple, as well as opportunities for our children and students to learn about taking care of the world, nature, nutrition, and science. In order to maintain our garden, we need more volunteers to help tend it. No regular commitment or prior experience necessary, just the willingness to learn and put in a couple of hours of physical labor under the guidance of our in-house gardening guru, Paula Deakter.

Have a different talent or skill you would like to contribute? Or notice a need you would like to help with that I have inadvertently left off the list? Let me know, I’d love to hear from you!

SISTERHOOD SCOOP ___________________________by Maril Levy

On behalf of your Sisterhood Board, I wish you and your loved ones Gemar chatimah tovah. May you and yours be inscribed and sealed for a year of blessings, good health, happiness, and peace. Shanah tovah umetukah!

Let’s all extend a special welcome to these “New-to-TBA” Sisters: Leah Simon, Andrea Packer, Judi Snider, Nicole Fisher, Marcy Brody, Steffi Boyland, Kay Kien, Barbara Siegel, Claudia Slipakoff, and Ferne Reber. We’re looking forward to getting to know you and hope to see you participating and enjoying many Sisterhood events and activities.

Please return your old, filled Tzedakah can to TBA soon, and get a new one to take home following High Holy Days Services. A big shout out to the following Sisters who came to TBA on September 10 to place the new labels on our new Tzedakah cans: Karen Feller, Suzan Fox, Anne Levy, Eileen Ogrin, Ferne Reber, and Dotty Wisch. Thank you all so much.

We need Sisters to volunteer to hand out the Tzedakah cans following High Holy Days Services on Sunday evening, September 29, and Monday morning, September 30. We also need volunteers to hand out the honey sticks and toy shofars that Sisterhood gives the children at the end of the Children’s Service and the Family Service on September 30. Start off this Jewish New Year with a mitzvah! Contact Barbara Rosman to help

(617.281.6066 or [email protected]).

Thank you to those TBA families whose donations sponsor the beautiful flower arrangements on the Bima for the High Holy Days. Remember, you can also contact Sisterhood’s Eileen Ogrin throughout the year to purchase Bima flowers in honor of all your special occasions and lifecycle events, and even for no special reason at all (561.295.5750 or [email protected]).

On Tuesday, September 17, close to 20 sisters enjoyed a special guided tour of the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse & Museum, and then continued on for the 3rd Tuesday monthly Sisterhood lunch out, at noon (held at the delicious Buco in Tequesta). Spending time with the Sisters is always so much fun – it’s an opportunity to make some new friends and to enjoy your old ones too!

Mark your calendars:• Tuesday, October 1, at 1:00,

at TBA: Sisterhood Board Meeting. Bring your ideas and help us plan and improve. (These meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month.)

• Tuesday, October 15: Take a guided Walking Tour of Palm Beach’s Worth Avenue to learn the interesting history of this famous street. We’ll carpool from TBA and meet our guide at 11:00am sharp by the fountain across the street from Tiffany’s.

The walk will not be too strenuous and will take about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Cost is $10 per person, paid in advance when you make your reservation.

On behalf of the Men’s Club, I again wish all our Men’s Club members, our TBA members, our friends, acquaintances, and supporters a very happy, peaceful, and contented new year – Shanah Tovah.

We kicked off Men’s Club activities for year 5780 a bit early on September 10, when Rabbi Alon hosted a Men’s Club Paid-Up Membership Dinner. Thank you Rabbi Alon for your gracious hosting of this annual event. It was an evening of camaraderie, wonderful food and drink, great conversation, and provided another opportunity to forge new friendships.

The Men’s Club Fantasy Football League is in full swing under the direction of Scott Ackerman, our Commissioner. Our initial draft has been completed, and the season has begun. This is an extremely

enjoyable event for those involved, and we hope to expand it to even more “owners” next year.

Wednesday, October 16, is the date for our next regular Men’s Club meeting, at 6:00pm at the Temple followed by our speaker at 6:45pm, Elliott Hochman, JD, who will discuss Estate Planning in the Real World.

Light refreshments will be served. This is the first of our Men’s Club meeting four-part speaker series for this season. The next speaker will be at our December 11 meeting.

Elliott Hochman, JD, TBA and Men’s Club member, will discuss Estate Planning. Whether or not you have started planning for your estate, this interactive session will provide a great opportunity to get some valuable information from an outstanding professional

in the business, while presenting opportunity to consider your “Estate Arrangements” in the light of recent changes in Estate Tax Law. This is particularly relevant for families in their 50s and 60s who are in the early stages of estate planning.

Elliot Hochman is both an attorney and a Certified Public Accountant, receiving his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from Drake University. He has worked as a Federal Judicial Clerk in Iowa and as a Tax Supervisor in Miami. Mr. Hochman established his own office in Palm Beach Gardens specializing in the areas of estate and tax planning. He has authored many articles pertaining to estate planning that have appeared in various publications, and is a past president of the Palm Beach County Estate Planning Council.

The New Year is in full swing and so are our three youth groups.

Our 6th-12th grade students (JAMTY & JAMTY Jr.) started their year off right with an awesome kick-off event at Urban Air, a trampoline park. Nearly 40 teens jumped, climbed, and played together.

Our 3rd-5th grade students (Cochavim) celebrated the start of their year with some yummy tacos and brand new youth group t-shirts that they got to tie-dye. They look awesome!

With Yom Kippur coming up, I am looking for teens, 7th-12th grade, to volunteer and help collect and sort the items collected from

our High Holy Days Food Drive. Collections will begin on October 8 and will continue throughout the day on October 9. If you would like to volunteer, please email me with your availability on those days ([email protected]).

Check out our fun upcoming events below.

MITZVAH OF THE MONTH: TOGETHER WE RISE

Most children entering foster care receive just two trash bags for their belongings. Together We Rise provides sweet cases (duffel bags with teddy bears, hygiene kits, and a blanket) as well as birthday boxes (with candy, party supplies, and gift cards) to local foster kids. Help local children feel cared about by making

a financial contribution throughout the month of October.

Every $250 collected will allow us to purchase and put together 10 bags/boxes.

TWO WAYS YOU CAN PARTICIPATE:1. Donate at https://www.togetherwerise.org/fundraise/kitsforkids2019.

2. Drop your cash donation into the box in the Temple lobby.

At 12:00pm on Sunday, November 3, The One School and HaMakom families will work together to decorate and assemble the sweet cases and birthday boxes. Please register at https://www.allforgood.org/projects/GQaOqwJO to let us know that you are coming. Pizza lunch will be provided by the PTO. Temple Beth Am thanks Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart & Shipley for their generous donation.

______________________ HAMAKOM HAPPENINGSby Alissa Frankel, Education Director

This is a busy time of year for everyone. School has started back up, traffic is heavier, and football is back on TV. Truthfully, it is just that time of year to get back into the swing of things!

While you’re swinging, don’t forget about the High Holy Days, too, from Rosh Hashanah to Simchat Torah. Thankfully, the High Holy Days fall later this year than last, allowing us a little more time to take in the meaning of Rosh

Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This is the time for new beginnings, forgiveness, and reflection.

Revisit, reenergize, or change completely one or all of the New Year’s resolutions you may have set in January. Around your Rosh Hashanah dinner table, share one of your resolutions—one thing you want to do differently, better, more or less of. Use this opportunity to positively motivate, inspire, and encourage one another throughout

the year to help everyone reach their personal resolution.

One of my personal goals this year is to read more books. In the past few months I have found my momentum and have been busy reading in my free time. If anyone has read any good books lately, I would love to hear some recommendations and share some of my recent favorites too.

L’shanah Tovah!

_____ A MESSAGE FROM THE ONE SCHOOL PTOby Dakota Russell, PTO Secretary

Fall has arrived at The One School and we’d like to thank you all for the wonderful participation we had during the month of September. Our Parents’ Night Out at Grimaldi’s was really fun and it was great to see so many new families come out for some pizza and good company! Our PTO meetings on September 16 and 17 had a wonderful turnout, as well as participation in our first bake sale and Wacky Wednesday. Stay tuned for more fun events for parents, children, and families.

This month, all of your children’s Friday Tzedakah collected will go toward our second annual October Mitzvah of the Month: Kits for Kids. The PTO and HaMakom are fundraising for Together We Rise, an organization that provides foster children with Sweet Cases (duffel bags with teddy bears, hygiene kits, and blankets) and Birthday Boxes (boxes filled with candy, party supplies, and gift cards). You can help our local foster children feel

cared about by making a financial contribution through October 20 at https://www.togetherwerise.org/fundraise/kitsforkids2019. Every $250 collected will allow us to purchase and put together 10 bags/boxes.

This family volunteerism opportunity is open to all ages. Please register at https://www.allforgood.org/projects/GQaOqwJO to join us on Sunday November 3, 2019 at 12:00pm to decorate Sweet Cases and Birthday Boxes that we will stuff and donate to local foster children. loved ones. The Yizkor prayers are only permitted to be recited in the presence of others, in a community of other Jews. If you have loved ones who have passed

Yizkor Services are done four times a

year: Shemini Atzeret, the last day of

Passover, Shavuot and Yom Kippur.

Sukkot is an excellent opportunity to discuss housing issues and homelessness. On Sukkot, we are commanded to live in temporary booths for seven days to remind us of the time when our wandering ancestors had to dwell in a sukkah following the exodus from Egypt. This naturally draws to mind those who are homeless, or who must live in temporary housing all year round, unable to procure a permanent home of their own. We have the privilege of returning to our homes following the seven days, but there are many who have no homes to return to.

MAZEL TOV! ____________________________________Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah Announcements

Bar Mitzvah of Jake Weinberg (October 19, 2019)

It is with great joy and pride that we plan to celebrate the Bar Mitzvah of our son Jake Weinberg at Temple Beth Am on October 19, 2019. Jake is a 7th grader at The Benjamin School. He excels academically and is an avid athlete. He plays football, basketball, and soccer for his school, loves to snow ski, and, until recently, played the goalie position for his travel soccer team.

Jake attends Camp Weequahic in Lakewood, Pennsylvania in the summers and counts the days until he can return. He also loves music, traveling, and baking. We make our own special challah for all of the holidays and often include his friends in our family tradition!

His mitzvah project evolved from his love for animals. He led his 6th grade advisory group in making dog toys out of PVC pipes and helped collect supplies for Furry Friends animal shelter. Besides raising our own rescue, Jake continues to give his

time and affection to walking dogs and helping out on a regular basis at their Jupiter location.

We want to thank Rabbi Alon Levkovitz, Cantorial Soloist Marcy Morris, and Rabbinic Intern Brett Tancer for all their love and guidance in this process.

Andrea & Tom Roth and Greg Weinberg

Bar Mitzvah of Owen Goldvasser (October 26, 2019)

With all our love and pride, we announce that our son, Owen Harrison Goldvasser, will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah for the second time! With much excitement, our family traveled to Israel this summer to experience the history and a deeper understanding of our faith. The Bar Mitzvah ceremony took place at the top of Masada at sunrise, as Owen read from the Torah. And on October 26, 2019, Owen will be called to the Torah at Temple Beth Am as we celebrate his Bar Mitzvah.

Owen is a 7th grade student at Watson B. Duncan Middle School in Palm Beach Gardens, where he is in the Pre-Finance Academy and has been on the honor roll each semester. His favorite subject is history. Owen has a particular interest in world and current events and politics. He was the only child present at Temple Beth Am during the discussion on the Israeli elections with Rabbi Alon!

Owen volunteered at the Quantum House for his Mitzvah Project, where he brought the children a much-needed new giant Jenga set for their outdoor space. He set up

paints and markers for the kids to decorate the Jenga pieces. He then put a special sealer over each piece so that these new blocks would not get destroyed by the weather. The kids loved the project and he loved spending time with the kids at the Quantum House.

We want to thank Rabbi Alon Levkovitz, Rabbinic Intern Brett Tancer, Cantorial Soloist Marcy Morris, and the Temple Beth Am teachers and staff for preparing Owen for both of his special days.

_________________________________ SOCIAL ACTIONat St. George’s Soup Kitchen by John Baldwin

First and foremost, I want to share my thanks and gratitude that Hurricane Dorian spared us a direct hit here in Palm Beach County. Let us always remember those in the Bahamas who suffered so greatly. We were truly blessed this time.

In August, we had a great crew of volunteers to provide a nourishing meal, cool lemonade and a break from the heat for some of the less fortunate in our community.

Thank you to all Temple Beth Am members for your ongoing support. Once again, we provided close to 200 full meals. All the meals were prepared with special care in our own Temple’s kitchen through the generosity of time and resources provided by TBA members.

Doing the prep work, working the kitchen and serving the meals in August were:

Richard RemickMyrna AbramowitzMurry AbramowitzMarsha LevinsonHarriett VogelFred LissauerFrankie LissauerJim BanicMarcy BrodyJerry RosmanBarbara RosmanShane GriffinBob SlipakoffClaudia SlipakoffSteve DanielBonnie SteinCheryl Baldwin

As always, it is particularly gratifying that we had a young helper for the evening. Many thanks to Jerry and Barbara’s grandson, Shane. He was a real trooper and provided a very helping hand plating the cookies.

Please remember that all your generous contributions of penne pasta remain welcomed and appreciated. Just bring the boxes to Temple Beth Am and we’ll make sure to transform them to a wonderful, hot meal.

Our next Soup Kitchen service will be Monday, October 21, 2019 starting at 5:00pm at St. George’s Center, 21 W. 22nd St., Riviera Beach.

If you or anyone in your family are interested in joining our volunteer team, we’d love to have you with us. In particular, we encourage any school-aged Temple members (13+ years) who are looking for volunteer hours to join this rewarding work (2 full hours credited!).

We like to have around 12 volunteers each month to serve dinners, so please email me, John Baldwin ([email protected]), to get on the monthly volunteer group list.

Temple Beth Am provides meals at St. George’s Soup Kitchen every 3rd Monday of the month, 5:00pm–6:30pm.
