SCREENCASTING SPECIFICS

Need: computer, Internet access, microphone

Programs:

Screencast-o-matic – record directly on website or download from http://screencast-o-

matic.com Uploads can be no longer than 15 min in length.

Jing – download software and record up to 5 min.

EZVID – download from www.ezvid.com Videos can be up to 45 min. in length.

Hosting videos: Screencast-o-matic - (http://screencast-o-matic.com ) up to 15 min. videos

Jing – hosted by http://Screencast.com – has a limit on the bandwidth (2 GB ) that can be downloaded monthly.

EZVID – no hosting provided

Publish to: Screencast-o-matic: to its website (must have account), YouTube or save as video files

in formats: Windows Media (avi),QuickTime (MP4), Flash (flv), or Animated Image (gif).

Jing videos only to Screencast.com

EZVID to YouTube (no longer than 15 minute videos)

CREATING A SCREENCAST WITH SCREENCAST-O-MATIC

1. Go to Screencast-o-matic and click “Start Recording” (or open program if downloaded to

computer) Accept prompts to allow or install Java

plug-in.

2. Determine recording area size. Drag and position frame accordingly or select from the pre-

determined sizes.

3. Select microphone.

4. Select webcam if you wish to show yourself in the recording.

5. Click Record.

6. Demonstrate a process, tell a story, give instructions, share a PowerPoint.

7. Click Done.

8. Preview the recording.


9. What do you want to do with this recording?

9a. Upload to Screencast-o-matic (must have account).

9b. Upload to YouTube (must have account).

9c. Publish to video file

Determine file format [Windows Media (avi),QuickTime (MP4), Flash (flv), or

Animated Image (gif)]

Choose full size or rescale (400 width may

work)

Add notes if desired

See next section for adding captions.

Select desired options

Save video.


ADDING CAPTIONS TO SCREENCAST-O-MATIC

1. Open a simple text editor like Notepad.

2. Preview the video and type what was spoken.

3. Begin with 0, 0.? Here is an example:

HINT: Keep the text lines broken into sections no longer than 7-8

seconds.

4. Save file as .txt file format.

5. Click Add Captions file

6. Choose file.

7. Preview your video with the captions and adjust timing as necessary.


PUBLISHING TO SCREENCAST-O-MATIC

1. Select Publish to Screencast-O-Matic and complete the fields.

2. Add captions as above.

3. Determine SOM Options. The

default is all three items. Uncheck

those you don’t desire.

4. Click upload to SOM.

5. When finished, you will see a URL you can share.

6. To check your uploads, go back to the home screen and click uploads. You can manage your

uploads here.

7. Get link to share, embed or download by clicking here.

8. Edit info will allow you to change title, description or add a new

captions file.

9. Choose which channels the screencast is in by clicking here.

10. Delete screencast by clicking here.


CREATING A SCREENCAST WITH JING

1. Open program.

2. Click the Capture bubble.

3. Move the crosshairs to select area to be captured.

4. Select Capture Video.

5. If prompted, select the appropriate microphone.

6. After the countdown, record.

7. Press the stop button.

8. Preview the video and name it.

9. Click Save. All files are saved in the SWF format.


10. To view recordings, click the History bubble.

11. Sort by date, size, images, videos or both.

12. To share videos, create an account at www.Screencast.com. Log in.

13. Click the Upload Content button.

14. Locate the saved file on your computer and upload.

15. Click the share button to obtain the URL or to embed video.


SCREENCASTING WITH SCREENCHOMP

1. Open the app. The white area is your drawing space.

2. Use the drawing tools at the bottom to draw. Hold down on a pen or marker to select tip

width and color. Erase using the eraser. Erase all by holding the Erase button.

3. Press the red record button and narrate while you draw.

4. Tap the background icon to choose a picture from your

device, from Dropbox or to take a photo.


5. Select the picture and determine placement and size on the screen. The

top section is your working space. Click done.

6. Preview your screencast, title it and decide if you will trash it or

share it.

7. If you share it, you are putting it in the cloud. According to

Screenchomp.com, “the only way anyone will ever find your Chomp is if you share the link to it. There’s

no way for someone to browse or search uploaded Chomps whose links

were never shared. And you don’t need to worry about cluttering up our

server; we’re okay with it.”

8. Once you share your Chomp, it appears on your device and stays there

until you remove it. You can share the link though by viewing it on the

device and tapping Share. Select the method of sharing.

9. Deleting a Chomp: Press the View Videos icon, swipe the

Chomp you want gone, and press the Delete button that

appears.


SCREENCASTING WITH SHOWME APP

1. Open ShowMe app. Your opening screen looks like this.

2. If you plan to share your ShowMes with the greater world, you might add

a photo of yourself and a bio.

3. This RSS Feed will show people you have chosen to follow. Explore lets you search for topics.

Search for Mrs. Russo to see some examples. Tap ShowMes or People.

4. Click My ShowMes and Choose people to follow. You will have the option of inviting friends

or finding your friends ShowMes or For Teachers, Creating a Student Account. If you create a

student account, you get an email with the user name/number and password.


5. Tap My ShowMes and Create new ShowMe.

You are provided with a blank screen ad this toolbar.

6. If you add a photo, touch and hold it to get this editing toolbar.

7. When you record, the record button changes to a pause and you have a digital

counter at the bottom.

8. You can add more than one image to your screen. Pause the recording to remove pictures

and change what you want to show. Click Save ShowMe in the left corner of


the toolbar when finished. You will have the option of saving previewing the ShowMe before

saving. Name the ShowMe and choose a topic. You can choose more than one topic. Your

ShowMe will post.

9. Manage your ShowMes by clicking the Manage button. Decide if you wish to

Share your ShowMe or keep it private. You can can also share on Facebook or Twitter, Email

the ShowMe or open in Safari.

10. Click the X to delete a ShowMe. You will see this message with

options.
