Students will not be using their iPads constantly over long periods of time.
The amount of time spent on an iPad each day in class will vary, depending
on how the teacher and student decide to use the device to support learning.
We need to remember that the iPad is an educational tool that is only used
when it is the most effective means of meeting an educational outcome. The
US National Institutes of Health suggest that screen time be balanced with
activity. Its actual guidelines discuss home - based screen
time rather than in the educational or work settings. Aus-
tralian guidelines from the Department of Health and Age-
ing specifically exclude educational use from estimations
of appropriate screen time, but also indicate the need to
balance sedentary pursuits with more active pursuits.

Wandina Primary School opened in 2014 as a state of the art, modern teaching and
learning environment. Led by highly skilled and committed educators, children are
provided with daily opportunities to engage with powerful digital learning tools allow-
ing them to create, collaborate, communicate and discover.
At present 284 students share 80 iPads and 100 laptops on a daily basis. Teachers are
harnessing the enthusiasm and eagerness of students by providing learning opportuni-
ties driven by the Australian Curriculum. Students are using the devices to search, cre-
ate, produce, celebrate, demonstrate and reinforce their learning. They are excited, en-
thused and highly engaged. In a world where screens entertain at home; school is using
screens to educate.
Why have we Chosen to go BYOD?
The iPad is transforming the way teachers teach and has changed the learning land-
scape. At Wandina Primary School, teachers are maximising the opportunities provided
by the digital technologies available to them. Increased accessibility to instant and glob-
al information with high levels of student engagement and instant reinforcement; stu-
dents are embracing the technology as ‘just the way it is’.
With a strong appetite to harness this enthusiasm even further and allow children op-
portunities to demonstrate their individual strengths whilst teachers develop individu-
al programs, a sustainable 1:1 program is required. We see this as a way to allow stu-
dents greater access to tools that may help them in their learning in some of their les-
sons. We will continue to provide access to computers and iPads at school for those stu-
dents who do not have their own devices to ensure they are not missing out on any op-
portunities these devices present.

Why is it important for your child to have access to new technologies?
We are excited and fully convinced that the most important ‚delivery tool‛ for your child’s education is our staff.
Wandina Primary School has excellent staff who embrace technology and digital learning – the kind of learning that
best prepares students with the skills required for the future. Students need a 21st century communication tool that
can collect, synthesise and produce evidence of their learning. How we learn is no longer relevant; in the same way
that how our grandparents learned was not relevant to how we learned. Learners of the future need the skills to learn,
discover and create; skills to adapt and change and be resilient learners.

What does this mean for
moving forward?
Introducing a Bring Your
Own (BYOD) Apple pro-
gram at Wandina Prima-
ry School for Years 2 – 5
in 2016.
![Page 2: Screen time and iPads The Future of Digital Technologies at … · 2016-12-07 · The iPad can be linked with any computer that has iTunes downloaded. Therefore an iMac, MacBook Pro](https://reader036.vdocuments.us/reader036/viewer/2022070710/5ec786381f65f218a44de493/html5/thumbnails/2.jpg)
Will my child still learn to read and write? Yes. iPads are tools, As are pens, books, rulers and calculators. Teachers
know when to ask students to listen, when to discuss in groups, when to write on paper at their desks, when to re-
search and when to use a digital device. None of that will change. Children will still learn handwriting as they learn
to read a book. iPads will complement and enhance their reading, writing and numeracy skills.
Why digital learning devices? A report released by the National Literacy Trust in 2014 indicates that almost three-
quarters of children (72.9%) have access to a touch screen device at home. Children are also like-
ly to use a touch screen when playing educational games (41.8%), painting or drawing (33.2%),
or singing songs (23.7%) all in a typical week. The Australian Bureau of Statistics also reported
that over 60% of Australian children aged five to eight years old access the internet. Our own
school survey results reflect these statistics with 94.12% of respondent’s children using their
computers or tablets to play educational games such as Reading Eggs or Mathletics and 11.76% using them for re-
searching and homework.
How often will students use the iPads at school? It is anticipated that the iPads will be utilised most days in the
classroom. From conversations with other schools, the iPads are used approximately 25% - 30% of class time (1.5hrs).
This obviously varies depending on the task, program and learning area.
Why iPads as opposed to Laptops?
The long battery life means that students can make it through an entire school day without the need to recharge.
The iPad allows for easy face to face interaction, avoiding the barrier between
students and teachers that occur with a traditional laptop lid.
Handwriting on the iPad’s screen is useful for quick note-taking in all classes.
Drawing on the iPad’s screen is useful in a variety of disciplines.
Pen-based annotation of documents and books is quick and easy.
Reading textbooks and other long-form material from the ipad is more comforta-ble than similar reading on a traditional laptop screen.
The iPad’s small size fits conveniently in student backpacks.
The iPad’s instant on/off capability preserves class time for meaningful learning
activities; learning isn’t put on hold while a traditional laptop boots up or shuts down.
By students having their own lightweight device it allows students to utilise the
device for homework.
The amount of apps produced for these devices is significantly increasing daily.
Can I supply an android/tablet de-
vice?
No. Wandina Primary School will
only support Apple iPads. No other
device is as well supported in edu-
cational settings as well as Apple.
Apple’s support in an educational
setting is second to none. Our staff
are well trained and versed to sup-
port student learning and trouble-
shooting where necessary with Ap-
ple devices.
Why Apple? The iPad IOS operating system has a reputation of being a robust and intuitive interface.
Its simplicity makes use at all levels easy.
The Apple ‘App Store’ tests all new apps before releasing them to the public, ensuring
no inappropriate content appears. The android app store is an open source platform an-
yone can upload to; the apps are not checked and leave people exposed to unwanted
content.
Apps perform the same way on all versions of the iPad, making it easier to cater for a
variety of devices over time. Apple updates are pushed through automatically ensuring
users are consistently using the most up to date versions of the software. The Apple ID
system allows users to change devices without losing any apps or information and share
app purchases with family members and family devices.

Will the iPad be used to access the Internet?
Yes. Students at Wandina Primary School currently have access to the Internet in order to complete many tasks in-
cluding inquiry-based learning. This will remain the same with the BYO Apple Program. School Internet filters will
be used to ensure safe web browsing whilst the students are on-line

Will my child be taught about safe and appropriate use of the iPad?
Yes. We have also investigated a new app called Curbi that allows parents
to monitor the amount of time their children are using the iPads, what
apps they are using and even to disable the iPad for a set period of time.
How will the iPads be secured at school?
Students will not be permitted to use them in the school grounds before school, at recess or
lunchtimes or after school. On arrival to classrooms students will remove their iPad from
their school bag and take it inside where it will be stored safely. Classrooms will be locked
when no-one is present.
Who will insure the iPads?
Parents will need to ensure that iPads are insured through their personal home and con-
tents insurance. The school will not take responsibility for insurance.
What happens if the iPad is broken or stolen?
The parents will need to contact their insurance company.
Who will upload the apps and how will I know what apps to upload and when? Parents will be informed of the
apps that need to be downloaded and they will download the apps at home. We anticipate that teachers will notify
parents of new apps at the end of the term and avoid ‘mid term’ requests. Apps may be shared between a maximum
of five devices with the same Apple ID at no additional cost. Due to copyright restrictions the school is unable to
load apps onto multiple devices.
How much will I be expected to spend on apps?
This will be capped at $40.00 per year as some apps used at
school are free.
What if my child already has an iPad?
If your family already has an iPad and you would like to send this to school with your child, you do not need to
purchase a device.
Page 3 The Future of Digital Technologies at Wandina PS
The life
expectancy of
an iPad is
approximately
3+ years
What happens if I cannot afford an iPad for my child or I have more than
one child in years 2 – 5? The school will continue to have a bank of iPads
which are accessible for student use across all year levels. Where siblings
needs to share one iPad, or students do not have access to their own, some
access to school iPads will be provided, however this will not be 1:1. Unfor-
tunately this means that children will not have the opportunity to share
their work with parents at home and will have to use the iPads in a shared
arrangement.
Who will be responsible for charging the iPads?
iPads will need to be charged at home. The school will have chargers in the
classroom if required.
Is a bulk purchase possible where
we might get a discount?
Yes. We have negotiated some sub-
stantial discounts with two local sup-
pliers. These prices can be found on
the back page.
Will my child have to share the iPad
I paid for?
No.
What happens if the iPad is not used
appropriately at school?
The schools ICT & iPad policy will be
followed in the event of inappropriate
behaviour: as it is now. A copy of
this policy is currently before the
School Board for ratification.
What type of iPad does my child need?
Wandina P.S. is happy for parents to send their child/ren to school with any iPad. The preference is for a iPad
with a minimum of 32GB of storage as this represent the minimum for ensuring hassle free educational use. Pho-
tos, videos, apps and student generated content can rapidly consume storage space on an iPad resulting in de-
creased performance.
The Department of Education recommends a 32GB iPad Air or Air 2 for any future NAPLAN On-line testing.
What happens if my child forgets their iPad?
Where possible ,a school iPad may be made available
dependant on the number of students without an iPad.

These Apps represent the current classroom apps used at Wandina Primary School for students to demonstrate their
knowledge and understanding across the learning areas. All of these Apps can be found in the App Store. You will need an
Apple ID to download the apps, which can then be shared amongst five devices through Family Sharing. From time to time
the school will send notes home requesting additional apps be loaded onto the iPads.
These apps will allow our students to develop the 21st Century skills required for future employment opportunities. They
are able to Communicate, Create, Collaborate, think Critically, be Self-Reflective and Problem Solve in different ways.
They will be able to express themselves individually, research, investigate and propose solutions to real world problems
using the apps to create, compile and present their information, knowledge and solutions.
