TRANSCRIPT

Scream opening sequence analysisThe film opens with the introduction of the titles name Scream, the title then changes to a red colour which has obvious connotations of blood/murder/hell etc. which links well with the nature and theme of the film. This is paired together with a scream sound effect and puts the film firmly into context with the audience. The ringing of the telephone in the title bridges together the scream title introduction with the opening scene. We see the telephone on the table and then the camera quickly pans up to the character, a young girl played by Drew Barrymore. She answers the phone to an anonymous stranger to whom she tells rang the incorrect number. We get an indication into the setting and props around her. The house it dimly lit with low key lighting which is a typical feature of horror/thriller films. The camera the tracks her across the room but the phone rings again and the girl stops and looks back with a somewhat concerned look on her face. While the theme isnt too oblivious we have a strong suspicion that the person ringing is the films villain or antagonist. It then cuts to a shot of the exterior of the house and more importantly the rope swing gentle moving back and forth, instantly we assume that the individual calling is outside the house adding to the tension. It then cuts back inside the house again and the telephone rings for the third time. Why dont you want to talk to me? asks the person ringing which appears like a normal question but because this person has already called twice before and to our knowledge outside makes it more sinister. The camera tracks her around the house until the person asks I want to know who im looking at We now know that that they are outside the house. The camera slowly zooms in on her face almost like the feeling of sudden realisation or that sudden feeling of fear.
