    Choose a photo with a strong subject such as a child or pet. 1. InKaleidoscopeKreator,openthedigitalphotowithFile>Open Image.

    Select the Star (08) template shape. 2. ClickontheSelect Kaleidoscope ShapebuttonintheToolbar(thebuttonthatlookslikeapiewedge)tobringupthetemplateshapeselector.Double-clickonStar (08)toselect.

    Create a kaleidoscope design. 3. Move,rotateand/orresizethephotointheworkspaceandwatchtheKaleidoscope Previewintheupperrightcornerofthescreen.(Figure 1)Everytimeyoumovethephotointheworkspace,thePreviewwillupdatewiththecurrentdesignbasedonthepositionofthephotointhetemplate.ClickontheKaleidoscope Previewifyouwanttoseeafull-screenpreviewofthekaleidoscope.

    Important:Forthisproject,youneedtolookatthekaleidoscopefromadifferentperspec-tivebecausetheouterpointsofthekaleidoscopestarshapethatyoucreateinKaleidoscopeKreatorwillactuallybecomethecenterofthefinishedstarlantern.(Figure 2)

    *If you only have a standard-format printer, you can make a smaller version of this lantern using the alternative directions pro-vided below.

    Save your kaleidoscope design. 4. UseFile>Save Workspacetosaveyourkaleidoscopedesignasaworkspacefileonyourharddrive.Aworkspacefilehasa.kk3extensionandstoreseverythingaboutyourkaleidoscopedesignsothatyoucanopenitagainlaterinKaleidoscopeKreator.Savetheworkspacefileusinganameandlocationthatwillmakeiteasytofindlater.

    (Optional)UseFile>Save KaleidoscopetosavethekaleidoscopedesignasaJPEGfileaswell,usingthesamebasenameastheworkspacefile.HavingacorrespondingJPEGfileforeachworkspaceallowsyoutoquicklyseethedesigninthethumbnailviewofWindowsExplorer,andmakesiteasiertomanageyoursavedworkspaces.Sincethisdoesn’tneedtobeahigh-resolutionimage,asizeof400or600pixelsissufficient.

    Print five quarters of the kaleidoscope. 5. ThisisaccomplishedthroughtheuseofthePrintPosterfunction.Eachquarterofthekaleidoscopebecomesonepointofthestarlantern.Sincetherearefivepointsinthestar,you’llneedtoprintfivequarters.

    Putfivesheetsofmattephotopaperintheprinter.ThenselectFile>Print PosterfromthemenutobringupthePrint Poster PreviewasshowninFigure 3.

    Set the a. Tile Size to 12 inches (8 inches if you have a standard letter-size printer) and Number of Tiles to 2x2 (4).Uncheck b. Print Margins and Show Cutlines.

    Score the folding lines on each kaleido-1. scope quarter. Placeeachkaleidoscopequarteroverthecorkboardandpokeasmallholewithastraightpinateachpeakandvalleyofthekaleidoscopequarter.ThenturnthekaleidoscopequarterfacedownonacuttingmatanduseastraightedgeandbonefoldertoscorelinesbetweentheholesasshowninFigure 4.

    Cut out each kaleidoscope quarter with 2. some key “tabs”. OrientthekaleidoscopequarterasshowninFigure 5andcutalongtheredlines:

    Place the grid ruler with the 3/8” mark a. along the right edge of the kaleidoscope image. Cut with craft knife.

    Align the grid ruler with the 3/8” mark b. along the two edges that create the “valley” and cut with a craft knife.

    Then place the ruler so that the edge c. connects the two points of the star and cut.

    All other edges should be cut flush with d. the kaleidoscope image.

    Cut the “valley” flap into two pieces by e. clipping in the middle.

    YoushouldhowhavefivepiecesthatlooklikeFigure 6.

    Assembly

    click on the Properties button to set the paper type to “matte photo paper” (or equiva-lent). Also, set the number of copies to 5. Click OK to return to the Print Poster Preview window.

    Set the d. Paper Size to Super B 13x19 if you have a 13x19 printer; otherwise keep the paper size set to Letter size.

    Thenclickone. PagesinthePrint Rangesection(ontheright)andenter1.Youhavenowsettheprintertoprintfivecopiesofthefirstpage.

    Clickthef. PrintbuttonatthebottomrightofthePrintPosterPreviewwindowtosendtotheprinter.

    Trim the bottom of the long tab. 3. Placeeachkaleidoscopequarterfacedownonyourworksurface.Foldthelongtabtotheback.Atthebottomcorner,trimsothatthetabfitsinsidetheadjacentscoreline.(Figure 7)

    Fold each kaleidoscope quarter into a star 4. point. Foldthetwoshortflapstowardstheprintedside.Trytocatchalittleoftheprintedimageinthefoldasthiswillhelpreduceany“whitelines”thatmaypeakthroughonceyouputthestarpointstogether.Creasewithbonefolder.

    Foldalongeveryotherscorelinetowardstheback(unprintedsidestogether),butdonotuseabonefolderoryouriskrubbingofftheprintedimage!YoushouldnowhavefivepiecesthatlooklikeFigure 8.

    Pierce holes in the kaleidoscope quar-5. ters to enhance the printed design. Thisisespeciallyniceifyouplantolightthelantern.Witheachkaleidoscopequarterfaceupovercorkboard,useapaperpiercertopunchholestoenhancetheprinteddesign.Ifyouarenotcomfortabledoingthisfreehand,youcancopyadesignontotracingpaper,placethetracingpaperovertheprinteddesignandpunchholesfol-lowingthetraceddesign.(Figure 9)

    Assemble the five points of the star 6. lantern. Workingoneatatime,applygluetothefrontofthelongtabofeachkaleidoscopequarterbeingcarefulnottogetglueontheprintedareas.Thenfoldalongthecenterscoreline(wrongsidestogether)andadherethetabtotheoppo-sitelongstraightedge.(Figure 10)Adjustthepositionsothatasmuchofthewhitefromtheflapiscoveredaspossible.(Youcanpickupthepieceandfolditalongtheotherfoldlinestohelpyouadjusttheposi-tionifnecessary.)Don’tworryifthedesigndoesn’tmatchperfectlyattheseambecauseitwon’tbeverynoticeableinthefinishedstar.Coveringthewhiteoftheflapismoreimportantthanlininguptheprinteddesignalongtheseam.

    Adhere the star points to one another. 7. Adjustthefoldsofeachstarpointsothattheseamfallsinthecenter,notdowntheside.Placeoneofthestarpointsseam-sidedownonyourworksurface.Applygluealongbothshorttabs(onthefront/printedside.)Placeanotherstarpointseam-sidedownontopofthefirststarpoint,liningupthepointsandthetopedges.Foldthetabswiththeglueonthemupandovertheopenedgeandintothestarpointontop.Pressdowntosecure.InFigure 11,thelefttabisalreadyadheredinsidethestarpointontop;therighttabisabouttobepresseddownintoplace.

    Continueinthesamewayuntilallofthestarpointsareattachedtooneanother.Trytobeaspreciseaspossiblebecausesmallproblemswillcompoundoverthecourseofattachingthefivestarpoints.

    Foldtheremainingtwotabstotheinsideofthelaststarpoint.Applygluetothebacksideofthetabsandpressintoplace.Waitforthegluetodrybeforecontinuing.

    Open the star. 8. Gentlyliftthefirstandlaststarpointstowardseachotherandthelanternwillstarttoopen.Youmayneedto“help”themiddlestarpointstoopenfully.Ifthecenterseamsshowtoomuchofthewhiteflapsyoucancoverthewhitewithamatchingfelt-tipmarker.Carefullydrawalongeachofthecenterseamlines.(Ifyoudooneseamline,you’llneedtodothemall!)

    Add ties to keep the star open. 9. Placeapieceofdurabletapejustinsideeachoutsideedgeinthe“valley”.Thenpunchasmallholeabout¾”fromtheedgeofthevalleyofthefirstandlaststarpoint(thesidesthataren’tconnected.)Cuttwo12”lengthsofribbonorcord.Foreachpiece,tieoneendaroundatoothpick.Cutthetoothpicktoabout1”inlength.Thenpoke

    theotherendofthecordthroughtheholesfromtheinsidesothatthetoothpickactsasastopper.(Figure 12)

    Open the star and tie the cords together 10. to keep the lantern open and provide a hanging loop.You can put a light inside the lantern 11. if you wish. Inthatcase,tiethecordsaroundthehangingcordofthelantern.CAUTION:Neverleavealightinapaperlanternunattended!Donotusemorethana40-wattbulb.Ihavefoundthata15-wattcompactfluorescentworkswellandismuchcoolerthananincandescentbulb.Ifyouuseastandardprintertomakeasmallerstar,astandardsizelightbulbistoolarge.Youcanfindsmallerlightbulbsandassociatedhangingfixturesaswellasbattery-operatedLEDlanternlightsonline.
