Scott’s Open andit’s about time

EVEN his hero had a jibe for AdamScott after the Queenslander won hisfirst Australian Open yesterday.

As Greg Norman presented Scott withthe Stonehaven Cup, the Shark whis-pered: ‘‘About bloody time’’.

After nine years of trying, Scott finallyshook a huge monkey off his back at theNSW Golf Course by claiming his firstmajor tournament victory in Australia.

In a final round duel with StuartAppleby, Scott’s form-slump in 2009 wasa distant memory as he shot out to ahandy lead early and despite a back-ninewobble, held on to finish triumphant at15-under par.

The normally placid 28-year-oldpumped his fists and hugged his family— and mentor Norman — and said hewas overwhelmed to end his worst everyear by adding his name to dis-tinguished winners engraved on theAustralian Open trophy.

‘‘It feels very, very good. Nationalchampion. I’m very proud,’’ Scott said.

‘‘It’s been a long time. I have beenclose a couple of times down here beforebut I never got over the line, but I thinkthat makes this even sweeter. And itbeing the Aussie Open, it means thatlittle bit more.’’

Scott started two strokes ahead but abogey on the first — and an Applebybirdie — saw them draw level. It was theclosest Appleby got all day.

As Scott bagged three front-ninebirdies, his rival had as many bogeys. Atthe 10th, Appleby dropped another andScott’s lead extended to seven shots witha 15 metre birdie putt.

The nerves kicked in for Scott and twobogies on 13-14 gave Appleby a sniff. Butin tough conditions, Scott made someclutch par putts to stop the bleeding andit was enough to get home.

‘‘I was a little nervous toward the end.

It was closer than it might have looked,’’he said.

Receiving the trophy from five-timeOpen champion Norman was icing onthe cake.

‘‘He’s my hero. I have said that allalong. He has been so generous to me withso many things, countless bits of adviceon the game. He can see inside that I wantit badly, which some people may not see,’’Scott said. ‘‘It was hard to hold it all

together. A few times today I had to stopmy mind from wandering when I was outthere about maybe winning this thing.’’

Scott’s victory was a panacea for all thepain suffered during a shocking seasonon the US PGA Tour, where he missedmore cuts than he made and saw hisranking slip from No. 3 in 2008 downto No. 63.

‘‘I never stopped believing in myself,’’he said.

Cross-code warfare haserupted between the worldgame and Australian footballwith fears the MCG couldbe declared an ‘‘AFL-freezone’’ for an entire home andaway season.

Soccer’s ruling body, Foot-ball Federation Australia, hastold the MCG it will require a$130 million taxpayer-fundedoverhaul to install rectangu-lar seating in readiness forthe world’s biggest sportingevent in 2018 or 2022.

With as many as 50 AFLgames displaced, regional cit-ies and interstate venues in-cluding Darwin, AliceSprings and Launcestonwould be prime candidatesfor more matches.
