Welcome We would like to welcome you to The Scottish Pathology Network Annual Event.

Today we will have the opportunity to consider how we, as the Individuals and

Teams providing a Cellular Pathology Service to the people of Scotland, can help

provide a Sustainable service.

We will consider how our service and working practice can best be shaped to

consider environmental sustainability, how we can protect ourselves to ensure that

we have a healthy and sustainable workforce and how we embrace new working

practices and technologies in order to improve the services we provide to the

people of Scotland. We will also consider new and extended roles for our workforce

which will help to sustain the service in the future.

We are fortunate to be part of a discipline which is at the forefront of new

technology, with Digital Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics allowing us to be part

of an exciting era. As we move forward, we must also consider our environmental

impact, our wellbeing and how we shape Cellular Pathology for the workforce of

the future.

Thank you for joining us and I look forward to an exciting and interactive day.

The Scottish Pathology Network (SPAN) has been in existence formally for over ten

years making it the longest established of five national managed diagnostic networks

(NMDNs). In that time there has been significant change in pathology services, from

modernisation of equipment to rationalisation of laboratory sites. SPAN has

supported this, by leading on agreeing a consortium model for cervical cytology labs

which brought them together into collaborative clusters. The network has achieved

a great deal in ensuring excellent intra-Board communications and developing a

Scotland-wide approach.

There are currently ten NHS Boards providing pathology services for the whole of

Scotland.

SPAN was established to improve pathology services by creating and developing a

Scotland-wide National Managed Diagnostic Network, which would: steer

modernisation, including service change and redesign, improve quality, ensure

provision of an effective pathology service which anticipates and responds to user

needs, future requirements, national guidelines and meets laboratory accreditation

standards.

SPAN aims to influence the provision of an innovative, equitable, patient

centered, high quality, and clinically effective Pathology service in Scotland.

Diagnostic networks are specialty focused networks that adopt a consortia approach in order to inform and drive

the redesign of clinical diagnostic services. NMDNs can be defined as co-ordinated, Scotland-wide groups of

specialty specific health professionals that support diagnostic services to continuously improve service delivery,

and contribute to equitable provision of high-quality, clinically effective services.
