In collaboration with Wattyl, a custom paint collection was created for my home, Villa

Carmelina. A grand 1889 Victorian Italianate terrace, this beautiful building showcases my passion for colour, pattern, texture, art, light

functionality and beautifully crafted, artisanal materials and finishes.

Recognised as an Architect who is not formulaic, I thrive on tailoring spaces that embrace and

celebrate all of these elements within a domestic interior. When it came to creating my own home, Villa Carmelina, I was given the ultimate canvas to express that philosophy, paying homage to the

generations who had lived in this unique home prior to my acquisition.

Entry Hall The entrance serves as an introduction to

the Villa Carmelina colour palette as it is the point at which eight of the custom colours

harmoniously intersect.

The timber dado, on the main feature wall, is finished in a cool grey (Lady Gray) capped off by a velvet grey-lilac wall colour (Studio Mauve) that seemingly graduates towards a

soaring, 21st century, glass roof.

The Victorian ceiling is washed in a sorbet lemon (Lemon Chiffon), with (Ivory Grey) piping, to highlight the decorative cornice

and ceiling rose.

Living Room An elegant room whose monumental

doors flood the room’s interior with indirect light, placing the focus on

the contemporary glitter artwork by Reuben Paterson.

Walls are washed in an elegantly faded pink (Miss Havisham Rose) along with

the decorative plaster moulds above the fireplace. Timberwork is finished in an ivory tone (Ivory Grey) highlighting

the original architectural details and referencing the handmade lace curtains.

The lathe and plaster ceiling provides a plane of light grey (Marcasite), the

perfect 1950s-inspired colour scheme. Colours: Walls, Miss Havisham Rose. Ceiling, Marcasite. Ceiling Rose and

Cornice, Ivory Grey.

Colours: Walls, Studio Mauve. Dado Wall, Lady Gray. Ceiling, Lemon Chiffon. Ceiling Rose and Cornice, Ivory Grey.

Dining Room Referencing a 1950’s Hong Kong tea house, all walls are finished in a soft

(Matcha Tea) shade that was custom matched to the beautifully textural hemp wallpaper that covers the feature doors of

the joinery unit.

As there is no direct light in this dining room, the ceiling was highlighted in a

darker grey (Modernist) to accentuate the handmade “cloud” chandelier floating

overhead.

An antique Chinese moongate provides the focal point, to frame views and display

a collector’s array of beautiful treasures. Colours: Walls, Matcha Tea. Ceiling, Modernist. Ceiling Rose and Cornice, Ivory Grey.

Kitchen This is the living heart of the home and

is cocooned in timber hemlock walls. Strategically located within the expansive modern living area, it features a black and

white terrazzo floor.

A linear island unit, covered in grey-lilac tiles, forms the high altar for food

preparation and social gatherings. It also screens the larger kitchen appliances.

Two horizontal bands of custom architectural joinery seemingly float off

the wall and are hand rolled in a saturated, deep pool of blue (Curious Planet).

Studio A grand room that looks out onto the

main staircase whose walls are washed in a grey lilac (Studio Mauve) that magically

changes colour throughout the day, thanks to the northern glass roof.

The studio walls borrow on this sophisticated, soft grey colour

(Marcasite), while a horizontal line of (Jazz Age Coral) was applied to the perimeter walls above the tall doors, enveloping the cornice and ceiling in

one dramatic gesture. The ornate (Ivory Grey) ceiling rose is crowned by a George

Nelson 1950’s pendant light.

Colours: Walls, Marcasite. Ceiling and Cornice, Jazz Age Coral.

Timberwork, Ivory Grey.

Guest Bedroom A room that evokes a Victorian collector’s glass cabinet, the walls are resplendent in

duck egg blue (Celadon Blue) to highlight a display of rare and beautiful objects.

These perfect grey-blue tones provide a quiet background to the ensuite’s dramatic

miniature glass mosaic tiles.

The original fireplace-surround features a hearth trim in the room’s signature Edite’s

Pink – the colour used on the room’s timber floor by the home’s former custodians,

who were similarly passionate about colour.

Colours: Walls, Celadon Blue. Hearth, Edite’s Pink. Ceiling Rose and

Cornice, Ivory Grey.

Colours: Kitchen Joinery, Curious Planet. Ceiling, Ivory Grey.
