“I’ll highly recommended Indonesia”

I'm Laura Escudero Bodenlle, from Spain. Im also member of IFMSA in Spain.

I feel very happy and pleased of had selected

Indonesia as place to do the research exchange. The

research is about "Candida infection in patients with HIV".

The objective of the research projects is to get abilities in

microbiology studies. We received the mouthwash of

patients with HIV, and we spread it in agar to see the

different colonies of candida. We didnt see the patients,

we only did the laboratory work. Actually it only took one

hour per day because there werent too much patients

with Candida infection. So I had free time every day to stay

with Indonesian students, members of Score Cimsa and i

just can say thank you to all of them because they are

really friendly with us and we went out to a lot of places

with them.

The first time I talked with my contact person, PJ, was by e-mail and facebook. After that, i met him the

second day and we got really good friends. I went out a lot of times with him and his friends : Jason, Edu, Pide,

Rendy, David, Riris, Markz, Patricia, Amanda, Sasky, Nikho. We went to Kawah Putih the first weekend and to

Dufan in Jakarta, it was really funny. We also went several times to the cinema and had lunch or dinner all

together.

I need a visa. I got it in the airport, before pass imigration control. My contact person (Praise Jeremiah) was perfect. He informed me of everything and answered all my doubts. In the airport a member of score was waiting for me, Gufi George, and he invited me to his house. I stay in a kost, very close to the hospital. It's nice. The kost kepper, Didi, is very kind. He keeps clean the kost and everything the general impression is good. SCORE gave money the first day to spend in lunch and dinner outside. I always ate outside with score people and it was very nice. I didn't cook because I don't know.

Now we have just arrived from Bali. We spent there our last week in Indonesia. We were 10 people: Pj, Edu, Pide, Rendy, Jason, Nikho, Patricia, Riris, Stathis and me! And for me it was the best of all Indonesia! In only 5 days we did a lot of different things: we walked around Kuta and Legian, we went to Bounty Cruise, it was really funny, there we did banana boat and snorkelling and we visited Lembogang island wich was incredibly beautiful! We also went to Benoa Beach, Turtle Island, Ulu Watu, GWK, Dreamland Beach, Jimbaran, Tanah Lot, Ubud... I saw the best sunset of my life there!

I really dont know how to explain my gratitude to them because they made my dream of going to Bali come true!!

When I go back to Spain I will highly recommend Indonesia as place to do an exchange program. Its a really good opportunity to meet nice people and know a new culture very different of mine.

I'm sure that i will never forget this experience and the people that I've met here. I bring a lot of Indonesian friends to Spain and I wish to see them again maybe in Europe or maybe in Indonesia again because I am sure that I will come back.

The second weekend we went to Pangandaran and it was really good. We went to the beach, we did a jungle tour, it was 5 hours trekking in the jungle, amazing! We saw animals, beautiful landscapes and we took really good pictures!

The third weekend we went with Pije (UNPAD's LORE) to Yogyakarta. I also enjoyed it a lot. Borobudur temple was amazing, we touched the statue of Budha and asked for a wish! i hope it become reality! After that we went shopping in Malioboro street. And we slept in Solo, a beautiful village near Yogyakarta.

Thank you very much.

Sincerelly yours,Laura.

PHENOTYPIC INVESTIGATION OF BACTERIA RESISTANT TO B-LACTAMProf. Evdoxia Diza-Mataftsi

I'm Fadila Wirawan from Indonesia. 3rd year at Padjadjaran University

The research aimed to analyze the bacteria that give resistance to antibiotics especially beta lactam. The method's by investigate phenotypically the presence of extended-spectrum-b-lactamase, metallo-b-lactamse and Klebsiella-pneumoniae-carbapenemase production in Gram negative bacteria including P. aeruginosa, K. pneumonia and other members of Enterobacteriaceae.

The course was nice, the working hour starts from 10 am – 1pm at the microbiology lab. I didn't have much research to do, but I got lessons from the tutors. I also got to experience some new technology that already developed in their lab. Mostly the analysis of bacteria done by automated system, so it's very helpful for the lab workers. And I think it benefits me very much to know about those technologies that I haven't seen in Indonesia.

I need visa. And it's very hard to obtain. I need some letters to be legalized and also some letters from Greece. But fortunately, my CP and NORE are very helpful with everything. My CP already contacted me 2 months before arrival. She also picked me up on time on the airport.

The flat was decent. It's located on the main street and have a quite walking distance from hospital. Although I wish that our flat got some fan or air conditioner. The flat-mates were nice and friendly. But I have to criticized the flat owner who moved me 3 times to other rooms in the same flat just because there're some new people will come.

I get a free meal in the hospital cafeteria and also a Greek paso, which gave me reduced price to public transportations and free entry to museums and archeological sites.

I made friends with other exchangees from Portugal, Italy, Spain, Latvia, Holland, Slovakia, Germany, and also students from other summer programs from Hong Kong, France, Hungary. It's very pleasant there to know people from other countries. Not just giving different cultural knowledge, but also new friendship links. Not only with the other exchangees, I also made a very good friendship with the residents in the hospital.

I can't agree more that Greek hospitality's also the best one in the world, along with the touristy site all o v e r G r e e c e . A l t h o u g h t h e Mediterranean climate in the summer force me to be tanned along with the 40 degree Celsius heat, but it's very pleasant to experience the beaches from Chalkidiki on the north to Cyclades Islands on the south, magnificent views from Meteora, anc ient Greek h istory a long Thessaloniki until Athens, not to mention their distinguish myths and legends from Mount Olympus.

I found my contact person from email. We sent emails before my arrival in Greece. I made friends and went out with my friends in hospital and also other exchangees for socials and recreations. And luckily I still be in touch with them until now.I will never forget this experience and the people that I've met here. It was a great experience and you won’t regret join it.

ANALYSIS OF PROTEIN MODIFICATION TO AGES

Prof.Dr.Andreas Simm

I'm Sitha Christine from Indonesia. Germany was my host country in this exchange programThis research’s objective is analysing protein modification to Advanced Glycation End products. The

method that they used Western blotting of 4 different samples, serum from a diabetic patient, a little child, a nephropathy patient, a young and healthy person and an old and healthy person to see if there is any significant differences of protein modification between these samples seeing the intensity of proteins in the bands. Unfortunately it can not be concluded, there has to be a repeated experiment with bigger sample. *which is not possible in my case, that's why I was taught other techniques like flow cytometry and DNA-RNA extracting.

Sitha ChristineIndonesiaPadjadjaran University, Indonesia2nd year of studySpoken Languages:Indonesian, English

First of all, my tutoring professor is really really nice, he asked me what I want to see there, and offered me to see surgeries, because I am a medical student.

The schedule is according to the normal working time there (08.00-16.00) usually but might change depends on your activity that day, I went home at 14.00 at some time but I went home at 17.30 once or twice too.

The people(my tutors) in the laboratory is speaking English really well considering they are working in international basis (as in journal writing, seminars), but when I go to clinics, the nurses cannot speak English at all sometime but the doctors are speaking really good English and always explain if I ask. And they are really nice, asked me to go to lunch together (but they talk German all the time but it's really nice to eat together hahaha)

About clinical work, actually I can but I think it will be a bit difficult because I don't speak any German, but I watched surgeries(coronary artery bypass and acoustic neuroma) and the doctors explained to me.

And this research exchange is really interesting, I can use many expensive machines (like flow cytometry which is only seen in books :D) and expensive substances (when I extract DNAs and join plasmids and so on) which is rare in Indonesia so this is a very worthy chance to learn among the experts And now I have good connections to such people, yes I think it will be a benefit in my future.

Germany is really great, organized, and the people are really polite, they greeted you like everytime so it's a little bit ironic when you think Indonesia is a friendly country. And they speak good English, one time I was lost and they were so nice explaining how I go home and even drew a map for me.

To get around it's a little bit difficult if you don't have tram ticket or bike. But once you have a monthly ticket you can go around as much as you want!(because Halle is a nice small town and everything is near). The scenery is different, traffic jam is rare, bikers are everywhere, and no pollution so it's like a dream hahahahaha...The people I met are other exchange students (they are from Spain,France,India,Romania,Portugal, and Brazil)which are nice, my contact persons(Germans of course), flatmates(Germans too), I met an Indonesian girl there too it was so great hahaha.. But one of my tutor once said, they are nice to you because you are a tourist, it's totally different if you are looking for a job here and so on.

Trips inside the country, I just went to Berlinusing car sharing service (mitfahrgelegenheit) It was far more cheaper than train, and totally safe even if you will ride on a total stranger's car. So just a tips, if you are in Germany and want to go to other city and small budget, open mitfahrgelegenheit.de and make a few phone calls. Oh I transited in Frankfurt and Hannover once. Berlin is a big city compared to Halle, more complicated bus and train lines but if you have a big map and train map, everywhere is near.

My flat is the nicest compared to other exchange student's flat, they were amazed because it was so spacey and clean (my flatmates are neatfreaks and I am not so I got scolded sometimes). I lived with a girl with her boyfriend and a full-time worker man so I don't really know them in the end. And I have a 24/7 superfast internet connection so it's REALLY GREAT. My flat is the nearest to a tram stop too.

I got 50 euros per week and I can use it as I wish. I cooked in the flat (oh I haven't mentioned that the girl has a complete cooking set) It was MUCH cheaper than eat outside.

The SCOPE and SCORE officers in Halle are joined and there's no real leader or chief, so everyone is everyone's contact person. They set up a welcoming and farewell barbecue party where we all meet and get to know each other. In the weekends I went with other exchange students to near cities around Halle, such as Leipzig,Weimar,Erfurt and on the 3rd week there's national social program in Dresden. Best places to see, it depends on the person. I like buildings like cathedrals and some of my friends like nature like river, trees so in the end we saw both of them hahaha..

The contact persons rarely went out with us, actually in August-September they are quite busy and the fact they still took care of us is really great. :D

MINIMAL-INVASIVE ASSESSMENT OF NEO-ANGIOGENESIS IN DIGESTIVE CANCER PATIENTS BY ENDOSCOPIC ULTRASOUND AND OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY

Radu Angelescu

I'm Hemastia Manuhara Harba'i from Indonesia. 4th year at University of Indonesia. This project named Minimal-invasive assessment of neo-angiogenesis in digestive cancer patients by

endoscopic ultrasound and optical coherence tomography. The purpose of this proceject is fine a new method to assess a cnacer digestive. First, he showed me how to used endoscopic ultrasound and tomography. Then at hospital, there was 3 cancer colon patients, so we used them for this project. And the result that we knew when the cancer colon started of 3 patients. So, its new methods at Romanian medical technology.

First of all, it was interesting project, but many of doctors there can't speak English, so its hard for me to communicate there. Actually I just have 1 time to go to gastroenterology department for this project.its because my doctor is going to another country for workshop. So I spend my day at romania to go to cardiology department. And I changed to SCOPE, so I have a clerkship there. I have a lot of experience at cardiology, such as my doctor (Dr. Alina ) teach me how to read electrocardiography , canulation, by pass for heart diseases, etc. My hospital is hospitale numero uno, is the biggest hospital at European country. So I proud

to have chance to study there. Hemastia Manuhara Harba’iIndonesiaUniversity of Indonesia, Indonesia4th year of studySpoken Languages:Indonesian, English

Romania is small country, its only as big as Java Island. The capital city is Bucharest. There main languages is Romanian and second languages is spain, so it is difficult to find people who speak English. This country is well known as Dracula country, cause they have a big Dracula castle there. But I'm stay not at Bucharest but at Craiova. Craiova is small city, its 2 hours to get there by train from Bucharest. Craiova has a lot of old beautiful churches.

Every Friday until Sunday we have trip together with others exchanger. Because of I arrived in the middle of the month, so I have 2 groups exchanger which is july and august. At july I have roommate at my dorm from tunise, Macedonia, egypt, turkey, Taiwan, jordania, and at august there are Serbia, Montenegro, rusia, egypt, turkey, Latvia, and jordania. It was a great experience in my life, cause I can study abroad and have a lot of friend from all over country.

It's really hard to get Romanian visa, I have to wait for 1 month to get Romanian visa. I don't why its so difficult but I thought caused its student visa, so its hard to get that.

My contact person is Adrian Angelescu, he picks me at Craiova train station not airport, cause I arrived at Bucharest not Craiova, so I should take a bus then train to get Craiova. He's have a great responsible to me.

The first weekend we as exchanger should share our traditional food and drink together, its like cultural night. And It was fun. I bring “Bagelen bread, Aceh coffee and popmie with chopstick” and also some souvenirs from Indonesia.

Every Friday until Sunday we have holiday. So they already arranged our trip schedule. We always go together to others places. We always go with our contact person and Romanian colleges. I ever go to targu jiu, brasov, rasnov, sibiu, constanta, Timisoara, Bucharest, sighisoara, tempa, and Craiova.

I stay at dorm near hospitale numero uno and also the universatet de medicina la farmacie de Craiova. At my room, we have 4 beds, 1 inside bathroom, internet cable, 2 tables, 1 big cupboard, 1 refrigerator, and we can use washing machine. But we don't get air conditioner so its really hot there, cause I went there at summer time.I have 2 times for meal which breakfast and lunch. But we should buy extra drinking water if u need, cause we don't have a kitchen there and dispenser so we should buy extra for that.

THE REGULATION OF CHINESE HERB DECOCTIONS ON CYTOKINE GENE EXPRESSION IN T-CELLS

Prof. Ming-Ling Kuo

Being exchanged to Taiwan was a good experience. I could not only experience the lab work in the university but also the culture in Taiwan. During the research exchange in Taiwan, the lab work was everyday scheduled except for Saturday and Sunday. I didn't have any language barrier in Taiwan since they are using Chinese most of the time. My main research work was focus on the lab experiment, so I didn't have any clinical work experience during this exchange. But I experienced the clinical rotation once in the Taiwan hospital.

In this research exchanged, I did learn some skills on lab experiment such as ELISA, RT-PCR, Electrophoresis and Western Blotting. These skills are very beneficial on my studies because I can more understand how actually the diagnostic test is done in the laboratory.

Wong Weng HongMalaysiaGadjah Mada University, Indonesia2nd year of studySpoken Languages:Malayan, English, Chinese

Taiwan is actually a very nice place to visit. Since my exchange was in Taipei, so I just can introduce some about it. Taipei is the capital city of Taiwan. Taipei can be considered as a developed city from the aspect of social and economy. The environment in Taipei is good, I can find a rubbish very hardly on the roadside because their “protect environment” concept is very good. Besides that, there are not much people smoking in Taiwan.

It was very convenient when I visited from to there because their transportation facilities are very convenient and work systematically. For instance buses, taxi, railway(MRT)… Taiwan is very famous of night market. There are a lot of night markets in Taiwan for example “Shi Lin” night market is one of the biggest night market in Taipei and I did see crowded of people in the night market which made the atmosphere become bustling with noises and excitement.

Page 14: scoreview

14experience - outgoing

On the other hand, Taiwan is also well known of food and drinks. Undeniable, the food is very delicious with a lot of choices like fish, chicken and beef with different cooking style. There are also many choices of tasty drinks and can just also simply buy from the convenient shop.

For staying in Taiwan within a month, visa is not needed. My contact person Is very nice because he was very responsible for his duty and treated me very well. He helped me as possible as he could when I was first reached in Taiwan. Besides that, he did pick me up in the airport on my arrival day. For this exchange, what I had to bring was just daily stuff like clothes.

I was living with my friend and there is no other roommate. The hostel is very nice like star class hotel. The facilities of the hostel are equipped such as bed, fan, air conditioner, bathroom, wash room, washing machine, water dispenser… I felt very comfortable when staying in the hostel. On the other hand, there is a convenient shop located in the ground floor of the hostel building, so it was very convenient to buy daily stuff from the shop.

For my exchange, the exchange organization in Taiwan did give me some pocket money for my living expenses. I didn't cook because there were no any cooking facilities available. I always eat at outside or eat in the cafeteria.

When I was arrived in Taiwan, there was a contact person who was already waiting for my arrival in the airport. After that, I was brought to the hostel of Chang-Kung University by the contact person and set up my living place. On the next day, he brought me to the campus and met up with my professor.

When I was in Taiwan, I usually went out with my friend who was also having an exchange in Chang-Kung. Sometimes I did go out with my labmates for lunch and dinner.

During my vacation in Taiwan, I think the best place to visit was “Dan Shui”. It is a wonderful place which I ever visited in my life. I think those who want to go Taiwan must have a chance to get there for experiencing the view and tasting the food.

Nowadays, I still contact with some of the friends whom I met in Taiwan.

15c reStanding Committee on Research Exchange

what is SCORE?The IFMSA Research Exchange Program is one of the

activities initiated and administered entirely by

medical students who are members of the Standing

Committee on Research Exchange (SCORE).

In 2009, SCORE had over 60 active participating NMOs,

offering over 1900 research projects, and has provided

over 1700 students opportunities to participate in research

exchange.

This program is purely educational for students who are

not intended to receive salaries or payment. The official

language of the research exchange program is English. In

general, lodging, board, and social program are arranged

by the hosting local committee of the National Member

Organization (NMO). The academic recognition of the

research exchange program varies among the medical

schools. Some universities recognize exchange projects

as a part of their curricula and award their exchange

students with academic credits. The participating student

should find out before departure if his/her chosen project

meets the criteria given by his/her home university

Objectives of SCORE

SCORE provides medical students from around the world

the unique opportunity to participate in exceptionally

rewarding and affordable clinical or pre-clinical research in

a foreign country.

Research projects organized through SCORE are

designed to deepen medical student knowledge in the

various fields of medical and clinical research.

The possibility of partaking in research abroad is intended

to broaden medical students' body of knowledge, and

introduce them to different approaches to clinical

investigation, medical education, health care, and ethical

research standards.

The maintenance of affordable exchange tuition insures

that students from across the world can participate without

incurring a financial burden.

Definition of the research exchange project

Research exchange projects designed by the program host a foreign

medical student for a defined period of time. A participating student

is incorporated into a research team of their choice and participates

in research under the direct supervision of a tutor. The student will

be guided through the basic principles of research, such as literature

studies, collecting information, scientific writing, laboratory work,

statistics and ethical aspects related to their discipline. At the end of

the project, the student might be expected to write a short essay

about his/her results and achievements.

The research exchange projects are specifically defined by their

tutor, approved by the SCORE Supervisory Board, formed by a group

of experienced committee members who will revise it and decide if

the quality and the description is enough to make it a SCORE

Research Project.

This allows us to keep a standard academic quality.

Once the project is approved, it will be uploaded to the database

Most projects on SCORE last 4 weeks, but some last more. Please ask

your local officer for more information.

Application

You can only apply for a research exchange if the NMO in your

country has an active standing committee on research Exchange and

has a SCORE contract with a country of your interest. Please contact

your Local officer on research exchange and ask him/her about

these details. There are many ways to select the outgoing students.

It is up to the National Member Organization to decide how they

want to carry out the selection. Please ask your local officer on

research exchange about the selection procedure and application

deadlines in your faculty/country.
