Garden City Summer Enrichment-
Course Descriptions
Art, Paper, Scissors
Join us in creating a variety of sensational projects. Get creative and have fun while using
materials such as watercolors, clay, paint and more. Preserve your clothes and bring a smock!
Bound for Broadway
Do you love the music and song of Broadway? Join us in learning the song and music of your
favorite broadways shows! This choral review course will allow students to learn about their
favorite broadways shows, the music and performance, as well as learn their favorite show
tunes. Students will perform a Broadway Review Concert at the end of the two weeks for all
members of the family to see!
Chess Academy Are you ready to take your chess skills to the next level? Or are you a beginner ready to learn the game of chess for the first time? Either way, this class is for you! Each chess academy session is structured by starting off with a 20-30 minute lesson on chess pieces, strategy, skills, gambits and plays, followed by 45 minutes of tournament style games. Students will compete in an in-house competition and no elimination tournament. All students will receive a trophy or medal at the end of the program. Students will increase their knowledge of the game and have a great time with their friends!
Coding and Technology
Have you ever wondered how to code a video game, create animations or your own story on the computer? Want to have fun on the computer and get creative? We will explore computer science through coding, educational websites, videos and unplugged lessons.
Cook With a Book (Primary)
Have you ever wondered what the treats described in your favorite books actually taste like? In
this class students will read picture books and bring the food to life by preparing it in class! If
you love to read and enjoy delicious snacks then this is the class for you! *If your child has
food allergies we will make every effort to accommodate his/her needs, but please be aware
that all ingredients are not guaranteed to be free of all various allergens.
Cool Caribbean Cooking
Trying to beat the summer heat and love to cook? This class is for you! This class will focus on Caribbean and Latin American recipes and traditions all while cooking cold dishes. Enjoy creating masterful creations using fruits and vegetables, as well as making cool and refreshing treats like smoothies, shakes, and home-made ice cream. You’ll make cold dishes such as, guacamole, tapas, gazpachos, salmorejo and much more! *If your child has food allergies we will make every effort
to accommodate his/her needs, but please be aware that all ingredients are not guaranteed to
be free of all various allergens.
Crazy & Rocket Scientists
Science is experimental, exploratory and exciting! It’s about the “Aha!” moments in life, like when you figure out how something works or when you’re amazed by the result of an awesome experiment. You will have the opportunity to learn about science through our interactive and hands-on science activities that will be sure to spark your imagination! Students will also learn about Newton’s laws of motion and build and launch their own model rocket. So c’mon and get messy! Let the discovery and exploration begin!
Digital Photography
Pictures and photography is everywhere. From TV to advertising and the internet. Students will
learn what makes an awesome photograph, how to capture the essence of a story and display
it, and how to use photography to express themselves. Students will learn and apply
fundamental principles of photography to enrich their summer.
DYI Summer Crafting
Turn old items into something new! This fun and creative class will teach the importance of renewing and recycling. Students will take unused items and restore them into works of art . Students will create art pieces from nature and natural objects, such as beach items and reclaimed wood, to learn the importance of nature, and using their hands to create beautiful works of art.
Fun with Math
If you like great math games and puzzles too; we have a workshop that is just right for you. We’ll roll the dice, play cards, make puzzles, and even order from the Mathematic Diner. These games will reinforce your math fact fluency and strengthen your problem-solving skills. Topics will include the major operations, probability, geometry, money, and more. Instruction will be supplemented with math literature as well. The best part is that you get to go home with directions for the games learned and play them with your family and friends.
LEGO STEAM & Engineering
Our LEGO engineering program includes STEM based challenges and free building experiences. They will use LEGOs in ice to discover how archaeologists work to uncover fossils. We will test the laws of physics by building bridges and skyscrapers and test their stability in simulations. Students will work to problem solve and will love rising to the LEGO challenge.
Literacy Scavenger Hunt
Ready, set, READ! Do you love to read? Do you love scavenger hunts? Combine the two and you have a fun filled class where you can let your imagination run wild! Search your surroundings for items that relate to the daily story all while you build your observational skills and strengthen your literacy proficiency. Working together as a team to meet the challenges of the scavenger hunt makes this an exciting way to enjoy reading.
Makerspace- Explore, Design, Build, Create!
Calling all kids! We need your creative minds to explore, invent and problem solve through hands-on learning tasks. You will work both individually and collaboratively on STEAM-based activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math). Get ready to create things like luge tracks, obstacles for marbles, circuits, and simple pneumatic machines.
Music, Movement and More
Children will work on their fine and gross motor skills by participating in movement related
activities. Musical hoops, soccer and sponge relays are amongst some of the high-energy
activities keeping students running and jumping!
Sports Fitness and Fun Run a wacky race, toss bean bags at targets, play basketball and much more. Have loads of fun
with your friends while improving physical fitness and teamwork skills. Enjoy the benefits of a
healthy, active lifestyle while learning cooperation skills through physical fitness activities and
sports. Leave behind the T.V. and video games and come join in the action! THE FUN IS HERE!
Sports Fun in the Sun
Fitness Fun in the Sun is a program where children will participate in various games and
activities that will help students stay active! Children will have fun taking part in creative games
that help develop different fundamental skills for all age levels! Students will enjoy cooperative
games to help develop teamwork and sportsmanship, along with time on the playground.
Water games will be included to stay cool in the summer heat. Don’t forget to wear your
sunscreen, dress appropriately and bring water!
Storybook STEAM
In this class, you will be working like engineers to create and solve problems from some of our
favorite storybooks! We will be going on adventures through stories such as “How I became a
Pirate”, “The Three Little Pigs”, “Rapunzel”, “Horton Hatches the Egg” & “The Most Magnificent
Thing”. You will work together to solve the character’s problem by creating something. If you
love reading and creating, this is the class for you!
Summer Arts and Crafts
Do you like to paint, draw, and build things out of clay? In this class we will explore different cultures and artists around the world. If you love art and enjoy learning new things, then this is the class for you! Just remember to bring your imagination and let the fun begin. We might get messy, so don’t forget to bring your smock!
Summer Strings (Entering 4th Grade Only)
In Summer Strings, your child will receive instruction in the basics of playing a string instrument. Learning how to play a musical instrument is a wonderful opportunity, but it comes with many challenges. They will receive instruction in the proper technique for their instrument, how to care for their instrument, understand the basics of notation, and how to perform simple pieces using plucking and the bow.
Wacky Edible Science
Have you ever wondered how things work? Discover, explore, and learn about our wonderful
world through tasty science experiments! Eat slime! Construct the layers of the Earth and claim
you have eaten the world! Come join us and explore the possibilities! *If your child has food

Woodworking
Children will use basic hand and power tools correctly and safely to learn principles of wood
construction and carpentry. Students will apply basic principles of using nails, screws and glue
to assemble several projects.
