OMSGA

If you have been working in SCOME, then most

probably you have passed by the idea that “medical

students are the first quality check of medical

education and they should rightfully have an influence

on the creation of new curricula and curriculum

development.” However when it comes to the gulf

region , students involvement in medical education is

very weak and although there always seems to be

some sort of guidelines or criteria set by quality

assurance units in the different medical faculties in

this field , the actual application of them is almost

non-existent. In an environment where curricula,

assessment methods, and teaching methods are

exclusively developed by faculty staff and where

medical students voice to contribute their concerns,

suggestion, ideas is negligible or ignored, a gap is created which leads to less interest in

developing the medical education system, as well as decreased awareness of what medical

education is and the worldwide updates in this field. On the long term, this directly relates

to a less developed health system overall.

As SCOMEdians, It is very important that we understand the issue and believe in it

before actual change. Once medical students realize how important this issue is, it

becomes easier to present ideas, and evidence-based recommendations to faculties, that

we think should be applied and implemented.

In our session in 4th

OMSGA, we will try to shine a light on the basics of medical

education, discuss issues we have always been facing, see how can we plan to solve them,

and gain insight to techniques of advocacy and campaigning for our causes; I can’t wait to

see you all there.

A bit about IFMSA

As medical students, we live most of our time in our university or faculty, studying and

participating at diverse projects or trainings in our local associations. Some of us are also

involved into National Associations (NMO, in IFMSA’s language), as well as into the

organization of national projects, conferences, trainings, advocating with politics or the

professors in our faculties.

The great change that IFMSA brings, is to take one step further. It offers us the great opportunity to meet people from other countries, cultures, languages, and other Medical

Education systems. To share together, bring our ideas, our successes and our failures, and together find new energy and build even stronger projects, new ways to advocate. The

core purpose of IFMSA is to bring together the global community of medical students at the local, national and international level on social and health issues. Basically, IFMSA exists because of and for the medical students who bring to it their knowledge

and willingness to share their experience and collaborate in international activities.

This Federation started in 1951, is run by and for medical students and is recognized by the

UN and the WHO as a non-for-profit, non-governmental organization. From the beginning,

student’s mobility, facilitation of partnership between students, and empowerment of

medical students in leading social and public health changes were main focusses. To serve

these objectives, the Federation has throughout the years built a solid structure to support

every area of its activities.

Next to the Executive Board are the Standing Committees, who includes often Liaison

officers; besides are the Regional Coordinators, the Support Divisions and, finally, to

have an overview over all these activities, a Supervising Council. Additionally, IFMSA

started 2 initiatives, and have some temporal thematic Taskforces. Throughout the year,

the different, Standing Committees, Support Divisions, Taskforces and initiatives work

within their own structure and team.

So, IFMSA is a an International Federation of Medical Students Associations, with

Medical Students from 104 Countries, who all have the dream to improve Public Health

and Social issues and who are ready to dream together and ACT.

If you’re new to IFMSA, then get involved, if you already know this whole awesomeness,

then: KEEP THE SPIRIT

A bit about SCOME Oman

"Hello SCOMEdian " If you're new to SCOME, get used to this nice greeting we

use here in the SCOMEfamily.

The purpose of the SCOME is to gather students from all over the world

who would be interested in playing an active role in their medical education;

how to analyse it and then advocate adapting it to the present and future needs as

future doctors.

During the GA's we have the opportunities to learn about Medical

Education's theories, to learn about other medical education systems, to receive

a training to advocate for better curricula. We also write policy statement in

this area, we share our enthusiasm, our ideas, and to get to know amazing

projects from around the region. Moreover, we brainstorm and gather energy and

motivation.

During the year, we can continue this work by entering a Small Working

Group, or start a project, advocate for changes in our universities, and so much

more. To keep contact, there is the FB-page, the google-email-group
