At the end of the week, you are expected to:

Day 1: What is Gratitude?

GRATITUDESub – Value of the Week

• Explain the concept of gratitude

• Appreciate the importance of being thankful as an important trait of anLPCian

• Evaluate yourself if you manifest the trait of gratitude

Gratitude is the virtue of being thankful for all of the things that happened to

us. It is also being positive in facing problems that we encounter almost from day to day. It

is very difficult indeed to be grateful to God if we are burdened with a lot of problems.

However, we should avoid blaming God or even questioning him on his decisions for us.

Remember that we He is not giving problems that we cannot handle. Gratitude is

acknowledging the perfection of things even amidst the imperfection. When you become

grateful, you will draw into your life all the love and abundance that you could ever want.

You are able to see beyond the challenges and see the treasures found in it.

According to Melody Beattie, gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns

what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order,

confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a

friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for

tomorrow.

Lastly, according to Thomas Kemphis, “Be thankful for the smallest blessing,

and you will deserve to receive greater. Value the least gifts no less than the greatest and

simple graces as especial favors. If you remember the dignity of the Giver, no gift will

seem small or mean, for nothing can be valueless that is given by the highest God.”

Ten Lepers

Leprosy was a terrible skin disease. It was infectious. This means it could spreadfrom a person to others, and they also would have the disease.

There were strict rules which a leper had to observe. The person had to live outsidethe camp away from other people so the disease would not spread. If the sores wentaway, the leper had to go to the priest to be examined. If the priest said that the man wasno longer contagious, he could go back and live with his family.

Sometimes people got the disease because they had disobeyed God. Miriam, thesister of Moses, got leprosy because she and Aaron, her brother, said that God should bespeaking through them as He did through their brother Moses.

Once a king got leprosy because he rebelled against God. His name was Uzziah

(uh ZIE uh) and he was a king of Judah. At the beginning of his reign, he was a good king, but later he began to disobey. He decided to go into the temple to burn incense to God.Only the priests were allowed to do this, and he was not a priest. He had leprosy the restof his life and had to live in a separate house.

The story about the ten lepers occurred when Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem. The men met him, but stayed a distance away. (The law said a leper must not come near and must call out "Unclean!" so people would know he had leprosy.)

These men called out, "Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!" They knew he hadhealed others. Jesus told them to go and show themselves to the priests, and as theywere going, a wonderful thing happened. Their skin became clean and free from leprosy! We can just imagine the joy they felt.

Nine of the men continued on to go see the priest, but one man turned back andcame to Jesus. He was praising God with a loud voice, and he fell at Jesus' feet andthanked him. This man was a Samaritan, a man from the region of Samaria. The

Samaritans were hated by the Jews.Jesus asked where the other nine men were. Ten were healed, but only one came

back to say "Thank you", and he was a foreigner.Jesus told the man, "Rise and go. Your faith has made you well."

Guide Questions:What is leprosy? Why were lepers avoided by the people? What did Jesus do to the ten lepers?

Did the lepers show their gratitude to Jesus? How?How can you show your gratitude to Jesus if you are healed by any disease?
