Dear Delegate,

A warm welcome to the "International School of Ultrasound inRheumatology" event.

I would like to inform you that as of 28 April 2014 the name of ourFoundation changed to EXCEMED – Excellence in Medical Education. Thename change will not impact your registration status in this or any otherFoundation event.

This transition marks an exciting point in the evolution of the Foundation. We are proud to have provided world-class education to thousands ofhealthcare professionals over the past four decades - as a result, theFoundation has become synonymous with delivery excellence and high-impact CME.

As we further develop our scientific and geographical presence it isimportant to us that our name accurately reflects the independent natureof the education we provide; EXCEMED symbolises our enduring missionto support the best possible outcomes for patients through the medicaleducation we offer. We take pride in our complete dedication to theprovision of CME - it is our sole focus and our passion.

Background and aimsIn the last two decades, technological developments in both hardware andsoftware of ultrasound equipment have been extraordinary. With theavailability of linear probes with a frequency higher than 13 MHz, a detailedmorphological visualization of the superficial soft tissues has becomepossible, and an ever-increasing number of rheumatologists is usingultrasound in their clinical practice. Several investigations have shown thevalue of this technique for both clinical and research purposes inrheumatology. The main indications of ultrasound in rheumatology includethe assessment of patients with regional pain syndromes and chronicarthritis, the short-term therapy monitoring and the guidance for invasiveprocedures. In the near future it is likely to become an essential tool forthe rheumatologist as echocardiography is for the cardiologist. At present, many rheumatologists want to become experienced with this imagingtechnique because they have understood its impact in the daily practice. However, the long learning curve is the main obstacle that hinders itswidespread use in daily clinical practice. In fact, ultrasound imageacquisition is operator dependent and a correct interpretation ofsonographic images depends on several aspects such as a deepknowledge of ultrasonography anatomy and pathology.

The “International School of Ultrasound in Rheumatology” was conceivedwith the main aim to offer an intensive full immersion program of normalultrasound anatomy of the musculoskeletal system and histopathology ofthe most important rheumatic diseases using high quality ultrasoundequipment. The course framework will provide dedicated lectures and livedemonstrations with healthy subjects which will precede the hands-onsessions with rheumatic patients under direct supervision of experiencedtutors. Moreover, the delegates will have the opportunity to use recentlydeveloped devices (i.e. high-frequency volumetric probes) and to share newinsights into various aspects of ultrasound in rheumatology.

Sonographic training will be specifically focused on aspects such as, grey-scale and Doppler settings, pre-erosive changes, acoustic microscopy, tipsand tricks to get high quality images and early features of enthesitis.
