TRANSCRIPT
Scientific Method
Experiment
• A process used to gather observations and test hypothesis.
Variable
• What is being manipulated (changed) or measured in an experiment.
Dependent Variable
• The factor is forced to change because the independent variable is changed.
• What is measured!!!!
Independent Variable
• The factor in an experiment that is changed by the experimenter.
Control Variable
• The group that does not receive the experimental treatment.
Constants
• The factors in an experiment that do not change.
Hypothesis
• An explanation of how something works.
• Usually an - If…Then…- statement.
Materials
• A list of items needed for the investigation.
Procedure
• A list of steps to be followed during a scientific investigation.
• Number your items (1, 2, 3…..)
Data Table
• A place to store data during a scientific experiment.
Graph
• An illustration used to show the relationship between variables.
Results
• A summary of the data collected during an investigation.
Conclusion
• A summary and reflection of the investigation which occurs at the end of the experiment.
Positive or Direct Relationship
• As one variable increases the other variable also increases. (Scatter Plot with a best fit line going up)
Negative or Indirect Relationship
• As one variable increases, the other variable decreases. (A scatter plot with a best fit line going down)
No Linear Relationship
• The relationship between two variables that cannot be shown with a straight line. (Scatter plot without a best fit line)
