Case no. 1

Misty loves to garden and wants to grow lots of flowers. She bought the MIRACLE fertilizer which is said to help plants produce more flowers. She wanted to prove if the fertilizer is effective.

Page 5: SCIENTIFIC METHOD Case Analysis. What is the Scientific Method? Systematic way of testing ideas, observations, predictions and inferences

She planted two flowering plants of the same species and size in separate containers with the same amount of soil. She placed MIRACLE fertilizer on plant A and no fertilizer on plant B. She placed both plants near the window and waters it every day. After a month, she found out that plant A have more flowers than plant B.

What is the PROBLEM

Will the Miracle Fertilizer help the plant grow more flowers?

Is the Miracle Fertilizer effective in producing more flower in plants?

What is the effect of the Miracle Fertilizer to the flowering plants?

THE PROBLEM

- what you want to find out- Is stated in form of

question

Page 8: SCIENTIFIC METHOD Case Analysis. What is the Scientific Method? Systematic way of testing ideas, observations, predictions and inferences

What is the Hypothesis?

The miracle fertilizer will help the plant produce more flowers.

The miracle fertilizer has no effect in the plants.

Page 9: SCIENTIFIC METHOD Case Analysis. What is the Scientific Method? Systematic way of testing ideas, observations, predictions and inferences

Hypothesis

-can you guess what will happen?

-educated guess or answer to the problem

What is the Experimental Design?

SETUP A: Plant with Fertilizer

(Experimental Setup)

SETUP B: Plant without Fertilizer

(Controlled Setup)

Page 11: SCIENTIFIC METHOD Case Analysis. What is the Scientific Method? Systematic way of testing ideas, observations, predictions and inferences

Both Setups have the same:

Type of Soil, Amount of Water and Sunlight, and Plant Species

Gather Data

Plant A

0 month – 5 flowers

1 month – 10 flowers

Plant B

0 month – 5 flowers

1 month – 6 flowers

Organizing Data

- Identify the patterns or trends in the data

- Is your hypothesis supported by your data?

Page 15: SCIENTIFIC METHOD Case Analysis. What is the Scientific Method? Systematic way of testing ideas, observations, predictions and inferences

ConclusionThe plant applied with Miracle fertilizer has more flowers compared to the plant with no fertilizer.

The Miracle Fertilizer will help the Plant produce more Flowers

Page 16: SCIENTIFIC METHOD Case Analysis. What is the Scientific Method? Systematic way of testing ideas, observations, predictions and inferences

The Miracle Fertilizer is effective in producing more flowers in a plant

Is it necessary to use SCIENTIFIC METHOD at all

times?
