PREFACE

A very successful 30th International Symposium, "Scientific Basis for Nuclear WasteManagement XXX," was held November 27-December 1, 2006, as part of the 2006 MRS FallMeeting in Boston, Massachusetts. The symposium attracted 135 abstracts from authorsrepresenting 14 countries, with over 90 of those papers published in this volume. Invited andcontributed papers covered a wide range of topics including: studies on spent fuel, performanceassessment and models, waste forms for low and intermediate level waste, ceramic and glass wasteforms for plutonium and high-level waste, radionuclides, containers and engineered barriers, disposal environments and site characteristics, and partitioning and transmutation. In addition aspecial invited session addressing historical perspectives and future trends was held in recognitionof the 30th anniversary of the symposium.

The 31st symposium in the Scientific Basis for Nuclear Waste Management series will be heldin Sheffield, UK, commencing September 16, 2007.

The success of the symposium and the publication of this proceedings volume is the result ofthe efforts of many people. We wish to especially thank the symposium chairs and reviewers fortheir help with the organization of symposium sessions and diligent review of the manuscripts.

We would also like to thank the MRS staff for their dedication, support, and assistancethroughout the entire process from the planning of the symposium to the publication of theproceedings volume. The guidance of Virgina Oversby (VMO Konsult, Sweden) and Lars Werme(SKB, Sweden) in the organization of the symposium was very much appreciated. Thanks is alsodue to Lori Salas for her administrative help and editorial assistance in developing the proceedingsvolume.

Finally we would like to thank the generous financial contributions provided by:
