Page 5: scientif ic program - IMCAS delivered to the Preview Room at least 2 hours ... BTL AESTHETICS 66 ... Our line-up of top international dermatologists,

dear colleagues, On behalf of the IMCAS Asia 2015 Scientific Board, we would like to welcome you to our 9th edition of IMCAS Asia and we are proud this year to mark it as our “premiere” in Indonesia in the paradisiacal setting of Bali.

IMCAS Asia, often seen as IMCAS Annual World Congress’ “younger sister”, has shown exponential growth year after year since its first implementation almost a decade ago and showcases the booming Asia Pacific medical aesthetics market.

Over the course of three days, you can delve into a scientific program featuring the latest techniques and updates of the profession with a special focus on Asian trends and particularities carried into both the injectables and surgery modules. Additionally, this year, IMCAS has forged collaborations with a number of prestigious learned societies and the entire congress is fully endorsed by the Indonesian Society of Dermatology and Veneorology (PERDOSKI).

Our line-up of top international dermatologists, plastic surgeons and facial plastic surgeons are sharing their collective knowledge on everything from facelifts and breast augmentation to rhinoplasty and blepharoplasty and from toxins and fillers to lasers and EBD, passing by practice management, clinical dermatology and cosmeceuticals. Our aim is to provide all participants with the very best learning experience in a vast range of specialist fields.

Besides the scientific program is the exhibition, which is attracting industry players large and small from across Asia and from around the world. The IMCAS social events and Gala Dinner give you even more opportunities for networking in an informal ambience and a spectacular setting.

Once again, we are delighted to welcome you to this very promising IMCAS Asia 2015!

intense involvement in global education. As the fourth biggest population in the world

Page 6: scientif ic program - IMCAS delivered to the Preview Room at least 2 hours ... BTL AESTHETICS 66 ... Our line-up of top international dermatologists,

We received 243 abstracts for IMCAS Asia 2015, representing 63% of all presentations!

Thanks to the dedication of our lecturers, whether Faculty members or contributing speakers, and the thorough reviewing work of the IMCAS Scientific Board, the scientific program attains a higher level of quality every year. The selection and study process of these abstracts ensures in particular the tracking and follow-up of the program content as well as the best studying materials for our delegates.

The Conflict of Interest policy (COI) that was initiated a few years ago ensures unbiased presentations: all presentations, including oral lectures, posters and e-papers are concerned by this COI, which is constantly updated by IMCAS in order to match the criteria imposed by international CME accreditation entities.

This year, 71% of expected abstracts in surgery have been submitted, bringing plastic surgeons at the top of the submission process, while dermatologists and MDs are close behind with 61% of abstracts submitted in their category.Abstracts are sorted out into three topic categories, all dealing with aesthetic surgery and cosmetic dermatology.

57% of presentations come from Asia

As expressed in the graphics below, the worldwide reputation of IMCAS has been well proven. The eagerness of international physicians to share and spread their knowledge at a large scale is higher than ever.

Illustrating the booming interest for our field in Asia, 11 Asian countries are highly contributing to the Scientific Program, the first being Indonesia, followed by Taiwan, India and Japan. Europeans are closely behind, accounting for 24% of all presentations.

In terms of abstract submission, Asia still ranks #1 with 72% of abstracts submitted out of all Asian presentations, while Europe still does well with 43% of abstract submissions out of all European presentations.

We would like to express our utmost appreciation to all abstract submitters, and to all their reviewers for their precious time and efforts spent on the IMCAS Asia 2015 meeting, always helping us to improve and go beyond our limits. - IMCAS Asia 2015 Scientific Board

lasers & ebdLasers and Energy Based Devices (EBD) are part of a booming market. Our sessions cover everything from ultrasound and fractional lasers to radiofrequency and cryolipolysis. In addition, skin rejuvenation and tightening, hair removal and the treatment of hyperpigmentation are covered. Asian skin can pose particular challenges when using lasers and EBDs so these sessions emphasise the safe usage of these devices to get optimal results. Take the additional teaching course for further insights into this domain.

injectables & fat anatomy on cadaver workshopOur pioneering cadaver and injectables & fat workshop is back by popular demand! Enjoy a unique opportunity to observe live injections on patients alongside a live dissection of a cadaver. The module dedicated to fat anatomy covers the different parts of the body; from face to breasts. By attending this workshop improve your knowledge of anatomy for injections and lipofilling treatments and better deal with complications.

injectable sessionsGet valuable insights into administering botulinum toxins and fillers for a number of different parts of the face and for a variety of indications. A number of sessions focus on the best techniques to employ to achieve the desired outcomes for Asian patients in particular. Become better equipped to get the best results and to avoid complications.

lipof illing & stem cellsIt has long been said that the future of medicine will be in stem cells. Our sessions on lipofilling and liposuction can update you on the newest developments and techniques in this sphere. Covering both the face and the body, they help you to identify the most appropriate treatments to use, the best strategies for harvesting grafts and ensuring fat survival and the all-important pre- and post- operative procedures to follow. cosmeceuticals classThis year we are introducing a brand new cosmeceuticals class to the program. This course gives a fantastic insight into this relatively new field that is currently developing at lightening speed. Enjoy the opportunity to explore the scientific research that lies behind the laboratories’ claims. Furthermore discover which products to use for different skin types and conditions and how best to use cosmeceutical products as a complementary therapy to traditional cosmetic procedures.

market perspectivesThis economic forum dedicated to the Asia-Pacific market offers you the most up to date information regarding the development of the aesthetic market in Asia. International experts examine the market and offer insights into the strategies used by industry players, both big and small. The session helps you to understand the Asian market and the potential for growth across different sectors. Finally, a round table discussion between doctors and industrials certainly sparks some dynamic debates.

breast surgeryBreast augmentation continues to hold its position at the top of most lists of popular surgical procedures. Being one of the most in-demand surgical procedures internationally, it is vital for any plastic surgeon to keep up to date with new developments in this field. These sessions cover the best techniques to use when choosing and inserting breast implants along with the developing trend of mastopexy. Enjoy the opportunity to bring your knowledge up to date and to ascertain the scientific facts linked to this procedure.

surgical & non-surgicalbody shaping

With the increasing advancement and popularity of non-invasive technologies, it is important for today’s surgeons to be able to offer a variety of options to their patients who are thinking about body reshaping procedures. From fillers, lasers and EBD to threads and scalpels, these sessions cover an extensive array of procedures, always focussing on the best techniques to use to help you to avoid complications.

clinical dermatologyAlso new this year are the sessions that focus on the pathology that lies behind many common dermatological conditions such as pigmentation or vascular disorders. Clinical dermatology lies on the boundary of aesthetic medicine but as the results gained from treating dermatological conditions most often have additional aesthetic benefits, it is clear that cosmetic and clinical dermatology are closely intertwined. These sessions also present innovations in treatments and in doing so give you essential knowledge and skills that you can apply to your everyday practice.

marketing & practice managementIt is rare to find an aesthetic practitioner of today who only performs procedures. The increase in the number of private clinics means that most practitioners also need to be astute business people. These sessions help you to understand the importance of digital communication: from creating the perfect website to managing your social media presence effectively. Furthermore, they cover the booming business of medspas along with an important update on the battle against the fake market in Asia.

blepharoplastyBlepharoplasty is an essential procedure in the repertoire of any plastic surgeon who operates in Asia. During the two hours dedicated to this subject, learn revised techniques for performing blepharoplasty for the upper and the lower eyelids. Also gain insights into the results desired by the Asian population and how best to achieve them.

rhinoplastyThe nose is at the center of the face, so achieving great facial harmony often begins here. As ever, there are both invasive and non-invasive procedures to consider, so these sessions give you an understanding of all of the available options. A session dedicated entirely to the Asian nose gives you a greater understanding of the aesthetic look desired by the Asian population, thus enabling you to give your patients the results that they are looking for.

faceliftAsian facial morphology requires a distinct approach when it comes to the facelift. It is vital to understand the desired outcome of the patient and, most importantly, how to achieve this. These sessions concentrate on the particularities associated with performing facelifts on Asian patients thus enabling you to approach the myriad of facelift techniques with confidence.

conf lict of interest disclosure

How does IMCAS broadcast the information to its speakers?

Scientific lectures are presumed to be based on objective interpretations of evidence and unbiased interpretations of facts. The integrity of our conference requires disclosure of the possibilities of potentially distorting influences. The audience may then judge and, if necessary, make allowance for the impact of the bias on the information being reported.

In general, the safest and most open course of action is to disclose activities and relationships that, if known to others, might be viewed as a conflict of interest, even if speakers do not believe that any conflict or bias exists.

This is why each speaker is asked to display his or her disclosure slide before beginning to lecture.

How about speaker(s) declaring a ‘‘no Conflict of Interest’’?

Neither the speaker nor any member of his/her immediate family has a significant financial arrangement or affiliation with the product, device or company involved in the congress nor any potential bias against another product, device or company.

How do you learn?IMCAS offers a variety of different session formats which will allow you to learn

and interact with speakers in different ways. Discover the formats here.

e-paper

These electronic submissions are only viewable via our digital platform.Log onto the computers at the IMCAS e-learning Station to view the e-papers.

live demonstration

These are sponsored sessions during which different companies may demonstrate their product or device on a living patient. Procedures are normally performed in a treatment

room and the images are beamed live to the conference room. Each demonstration usually lasts for 20 minutes.

regional masterclass

Regional Masterclass – A regional masterclass is usually made up of a seriesof scientific sessions each dedicated to a certain topic. Each of these sessions

is carefully built to cater for practitioners from the region. The presentations reflect regional preferences and particularities.

scientific session

The vast majority of our sessions fall into this category. Two chairpersons introducea series of speakers who each give a presentation that is 8 to 12 minutes long.

The floor is then opened up for questions from the audience.

symposium

Symposia are sponsored sessions in which the content and speakers are entirely decided by the sponsoring company. Attend these sessions to find out more

about the latest offerings of the company.

teaching course

Teaching courses offer a more interactive and intimate experience than the scientific sessions. They are designed to offer comprehensive in depth coverage of a subject

primarily through video-based learning. There is also more time allocated for questions and answers and the opportunity for participants to reflect on their learning

and evaluate their understanding.

video paper

Video papers are given in the exhibition hall, facing a camera. These presentationsare filmed and delegates can watch the presentation live in the video paper area

of the exhibition hall.

How is IMCAS funded?

IMCAS retrieves its revenues either from doctors’ subscriptions or from industry financial support:• Regarding doctors’ subscriptions, the fees that can be found on the registration form reflect the financial support that IMCAS receives from doctors.• Concerning industry financial support, the amount of investment proposed by the sponsor is characterised by the different support levels. For example, at IMCAS Asia 2015, the minimum investment requirement for a Platinum sponsor is 35 000 USD, whereas the minimum investment requirement for a Classic sponsor is 5 000 USD.

Additionally, there exist two ways that companies may financially support IMCAS activities, based on whether or not the companies have a direct influence on the program, individual sessions, subjects for discussion, content or choice of Faculty members. This is why we highlight the difference between activities supported by a sponsorship and activities supported by an unrestricted educational grant.

what is the difference between sponsorship and a grant?

why should this funding be clearly identified?Identifying the origins of the funds allows transparency at all stages. Participants of all activities, whether doctors or industry representatives, should therefore disclose all potentially distorting financial or other influences (Conflict of Interest). The audience may then judge and, if necessary, make allowances for the impact of bias on the information being presented.

which sessions benefit from educational grants? At IMCAS Asia 2015, the Live anatomy on cadaver: Injectables & fat workshop scheduled on Friday July 31 from 2 PM to 5 PM benefits from a financial donation of three companies, with no exchange partnership. The companies that offer grants for this session are:• MATRIFILL 海薇 - SHANGHAI HAOHAI BIOLOGICAL• MERZ AESTHETICS• IPSEN PHARMA

which sessions are sponsored?See the list of Symposia on page 35 and the details of the Live Demonstrations on pages 16 and 20 to see the details of the sponsored sessions.

SPONSORShIP is a mutually beneficial partnership exchange between the supporting company and IMCAS. The supporting company provides financial support for an activity such as a live demonstration, a symposium or a guest lecture and in return may present syntheses of studies or trials, practical solutions to specific patient problems and/or live demonstrations to the audience. The content of these sessions is therefore not endorsed by IMCAS.

An UNRESTRICTED EDUCATIONAL gRANT is a financial donation offered to support a specific scientific session with no exchange partnership. These sessions are eligible for CME credits and thus for ethical and educational purposes, the Scientific Board decides the scientific content and speakers of these sessions.

what are the newest techniques and developments in injectables that you are using?

The most interesting and newest technique that I am using to treat the tear trough is to use microcannulae to detect the orbicularis retaining ligament and fill filler right next to it. It will give enough and direct support to the tear trough. It was not easy to feel underlying structures with needles before. In addition, very superficial subdermal injection of fluid HA over the cheeks after fractional lasering is preferred by my patients for its amazing dermal «hydrating effect» which cannot be achieved by lasers alone.

What are some ways that filler complications can be avoided?

There are several ways to avoid filler injection complications. One way is to always do retrograde injections to avoid intravascular injection. To avoid unnecessary deposit of HA, accurate bolus injection with microcannulae, rather than field treatment is suggested. In addition, distribution of HA, though it looks great right after molding, usually changes chronically because of gravity and facial muscle movement.

what will the partnership between the Taiwanese Dermatological Association and IMcAS Asia bring to practitioners?

In Taiwan, there are many experienced dermatologists using injectables, energy-based equipment and surgical procedures, including liposuction, liposculpting and hair transplant. Our most advanced medical and surgical techniques and the modern Asian aesthetic concept in Taiwan will benefit all attendees and enhance the standards of aesthetic dermatology and cosmetic surgery in this area. Being a partner of IMCAS Asia, the Taiwanese Dermatological Association (TDA) will bring you a fruitful meeting program provided by our members and contribute to the continuation and the growth of medical education. IMCAS Asia will be one of the best congresses of aesthetic dermatology and cosmetic surgery in Asia.

what are the laser treatments that are better suited to or more effective on Asian skin?

Laser treatments are becoming better suited to or more effective on Asian Skin because of the development of understanding in laser tissue interaction in Asian skin. Research has shown a greater rate of melanogenesis and higher melanin content in darker skin types. That is why any trauma easily produces post-inflammation hyperpigmentation. Asian skin is also vulnerable to trauma that can very easily cause it to develop scars or even keloids.Fortunately in the last decade, there has been an increased understanding about laser tissue interaction especially in Asian skin. Also there are a lot of developments of new lasers and old lasers with new technology. So nowadays there is increasing laser effectiveness and safety in the treatment of many diseases or many aesthetic problems for Asian skin. what are some ways that complications from lasers or energy based devices can be avoided?

Continuing research and clinical studies especially in laser and tissue interaction can definitely help complications from lasers or energy based devices to be avoided. Proper training and regulations do not just minimise the risk of complications but also increase the efficacy of therapy. In your opinion, how is Indonesia positioned in terms of global medical aesthetic practices?

It is growing rapidly, especially in aesthetic injections. Continuing medical education and training is the key for maximum results and patient safety.

what makes the Live Anatomy on cadaver workshop important and relevant for all practitioners to attend?

The live anatomy on cadaver & injectables, threads and fat workshop is a unique educational experience that allows practicing physicians to explore the complex 3-dimensional anatomic structures of the face while injections take place. Delegates will be taught how to identify facial structures such as the fat compartments, retaining ligaments, blood vessels, nerves etc. This will allow delegates to see and understand the injection basis and anatomic structures that are poorly taught in other workshops and which are, as a result, frequently misunderstood. With this highly practical education, clinicians will be more competent to create more aesthetic results and to avoid anatomic danger zones during botulinum toxin and filler injections. Delegates will also have the rare opportunity to immediately correlate the injection technique and immediate results with the exact location in the anatomy of the cadaver.

A section on threads is being included in the cadaver workshop for the first time ever, what do you think has led to their increased popularity?

Thread lift is a minimally invasive procedure that is designed to produce lifting of the saggy tissue of the face using specific sutures. This procedure has been so popular in Asia because of the simplicity of its technique, the minimal risk, and the fact that it is said to have dramatic yet natural results. However, thread lifts have not been very extensively studied and rarely instructed using cadaver in any live workshop. At IMCAS Asia 2015, this popular procedure will be scientifically and clinically reviewed with lectures, debates, and live anatomy on cadaver & thread lift workshop. For the first time, attending physicians will gain anatomical insight to improve their practice of thread lifting in the correct facial tissue layer and will therefore get better result for their patients.

In your opinion, how is Indonesia positioned in terms of global medical aesthetic practice?

Indonesia is considered as the rapidly growing country in global medical aesthetic practice. The number of Indonesian delegates often dominates congresses in Asia-Pacific. New procedures and technology are quickly practiced by Indonesian doctors due to their intense involvement in global education. The conducive government policy also allows medical aesthetic products, materials, and instruments to enter the Indonesian market. As the fourth biggest population in the world (below the US and above Brazil), Indonesia is of great interest for the medical aesthetic industry.

This is the first time that IMCAS will be held in Indonesia, what will this unique location bring to the congress?

IMCAS Asia, with its first Indonesian edition on the beautiful island of Bali, sets a unique point of combining high science with a great holiday. After the congress, the delegates and faculty speakers can visit many interesting places in Bali, from the beach in Nusa Dua to the cultural Ubud, as featured in Julia Roberts’ Eat Pray Love. Nothing more can be expected from a medical aesthetic congress.

what are some of the newest techniques that you are using when performing lipofilling procedures on the face? One of the newest techniques that I am using in facial lipofilling procedures is micro grafts. For this procedure, I use the cutting-edge motorized cordless injection device specifically designed and engineered for micro-fat grafting. Precision, control, repeatability, and safety are the key words for micro fat grafts. The HAPI concept for micro fat transfer in the face allows me to achieve a complete control of harvesting micro fat graft in a closed system to maximize fat retention and predictability. I optimize the micro procedure with a closed and sterile procedure. This solution offers the most high quality fat purification, and a control of micro injection. In the future this proved system could be the most «user friendly combined set» for all micro fat injections. what has led SoFceP to develop a partnership with IMcAS, not just during the Annual world congress in Paris, but also in Asia? The partnership between IMCAS and SOFCEP gives French surgeons the opportunity to create relationships with their international colleagues. Furthermore, plastic surgeons can learn an enormous amount at IMCAS because of its interdisciplinary approach. IMCAS congresses also provide an opportunity for plastic surgery to become bigger amongst the specialities and as a platform for SOFCEP, it goes a long way towards promoting French surgery and ‘the French Aesthetic Touch’ all around the world, not just in France. Finally, IMCAS offers French surgeons an excellent opportunity to present in English in an international environment, a very useful skill and a good training exercise for any surgeon. How does IMcAS help practitioners to anticipate future developments in the field of aesthetic plastic surgery and dermatology? IMCAS helps practitioners to anticipate future developments due to its mix of specialities: a plastic surgeon can learn a lot from a dermatologist and vice-versa. IMCAS was one of the initiators who brought these two specialities together and now it is exactly this association which enables practitioners to better anticipate the future developments in the field.

dr so yeon leempost-doctoral fellow, south korea

Dr So yeon Leem is currently conducting research at the collège d’études mondiales of the Fondation Maison des sciences de l’homme in Paris. A South Korean national, she has spent the last decade or so researching plastic surgery culture and beauty ideals in South Korea.

can you tell us a bit more about how you became interested in exploring plastic surgery?

Whilst pursuing my PhD in Science and Technology Studies at Seoul National University, I found that there was a hole in social studies of science and technology. Many studies that are strictly scientific don’t necessarily reflect everyday life. If we take nuclear energy as an example, there are, of course some people who are very interested in this subject and who know a lot about it, but this is not a subject that people generally think and talk about everyday. I saw this as problematic because if we don’t consider something like plastic surgery as a topic for serious research, then, we cannot understand our desires to live a better life or our intimate relationships with science and technology. My research into plastic surgery in Korea fills this hole – everyone is concerned about their body and what they look like and it is a subject that is often talked about among friends, partners and family. It is this that makes it so interesting to study.

How have beauty ideals changed and developed over the years in South Korea?

I generally attribute two eras that correspond to two very different beauty ideals in South Korea: before the year 2000, and after the year 2000, with a transitory period during the South Korean financial crisis of 1997 to 2000.During the first period there was a real focus on Western, developed countries in South Korea. South Korea wanted to catch up with these countries and to modernize itself. This overall feeling was reflected in the predominant beauty ideal, which focused on Western beauty. Individual Western features, such as the eyes, nose and mouth, were

considered to be beautiful and therefore to be emulated by South Koreans. There was not, however, a concrete idea of the beautiful South Korean face as a whole. Rather, the beauty ideal in this era was very fragmented.During and after the economic crisis, these ideals began to change. A new beauty ideal, which focused on the South Korean face as a whole, emerged as a kind of defense reaction. South Koreans became very sensitive to competition on both a national and an individual level. The days when cheap ‘made in Korea’ products were sold to Western countries and the demand was higher than the supply in the job market were over. This competiveness meant that South Korea and South Koreans were desperate to find what they did better than others, rather than simply imitating others. This search led to the casting off of previous Western beauty ideals and the search and creation of the new ideal of a harmonious South Korean face.

In your research, you talk about ‘plastic beauty’ and ‘plastic monster’, can you explain a little bit more about this concept?

These two terms are very commonly used in modern Korean culture, although they are difficult to translate into English. Broadly speaking the ‘plastic monster’ represents the aforementioned first beauty ideal, where a focus on parts of the face, such as the eyes or nose, led to an over-Westernised, unnatural look, which is now viewed negatively. ‘Plastic beauty’ is representative of the second beauty ideal, which focuses much more on the balance and proportions of the face as a whole. The boundary between ‘plastic monster’ and ‘plastic beauty’ is very ambiguous and subjective in the same way as the boundary between ‘plastic beauty’ and ‘natural beauty’ often is. Indeed, the more that it is confused with ‘natural beauty’, the more praised ‘plastic beauty’ is. Together, the terms ‘plastic monster’ and ‘plastic beauty’ represent Koreans’ ambivalence towards plastic surgery.

Do you think that South Korean beauty ideals have spread across Asia in the same way as other cultural forms?

Definitely! Plastic surgery is a part of the Korean Wave [the increasing popularity of Korean culture – music, television dramas, film – across Asia]. It is not, however, explicit. It forms a subtle part of this wave as people idolize and copy very good-looking actors and singers. Asians look upon the new beauty ideal that is so prevalent in Korean culture as one to emulate. I talked to plastic surgeons in Thailand who used the term ‘Korean style plastic surgery’ to promote their clinic. They associated Korean style plastic surgery with ‘natural-looking’ and ‘friendly-to-Asian’ faces.

South Korea is often described as being the ‘capital of plastic surgery’. Do you agree with this assessment?

Yes, I think that it is justified to call South Korea the ‘capital of plastic surgery’. However, in my opinion, this is not due of the sheer number of procedures performed in the country, but rather because of the ways that South Koreans think about plastic surgery. The prevalence of plastic surgery in South Korea means that it is seen as being an essential part of people’s national identity no matter whether it is seen negatively or positively. In this sense, plastic surgery is a cultural phenomenon that has a real influence on how South Korea people think about themselves.

what are the latest developments in the use of stem cells and PRP in aesthetic medicine?

I have been using adipose derived stem cells for breast augmentation and facial rejuvenation but the latest study that we are working on is to use adipose derived stem cells for alopecia. We started the clinical study using adipose derived stem cells for alopecia and we are seeing very interesting results. Regarding PRP, using PRP itself shows effect but adding b-FGF (basic fibroblast growth factor) will drastically show better effects and consistent results.

where do you think that the future of stem cell use lies?

Regenerative medicine is to use your own cells to cure and improve function. In the cosmetic field, if the patient does not have to use a foreign object to meet their expectations, this will be ideal. I believe stem cells have the capability to meet this function.

why has the Japanese Society of Aesthetic Surgery chosen to collaborate with IMcAS for this congress?

The Japanese Society of Aesthetic Surgery (JSAS) has been trying to improve the quality of aesthetic surgery in Japan. Current aesthetic medicine is broad including, surgery, dermatology, and internal medicine. IMCAS is the world’s largest and known congress and the collaboration with IMCAS will improve aesthetic medicine in Japan and it is also a good opportunity to share Japanese techniques and ideas of aesthetic medicine globally.
