Look at the next three slides

1) Decide which ones are the following grades:

2) Draw a spider diagram for all the things you will need to include for each of the three areas.

Fire Extinguishers:

Objectives:

Make one type of fire extinguisher and be able to explain how and why it works.

Inform an audience of the main types of fire extinguishers and what they are used for.

Making a Fire Extinguisher

In order to put out a fire, one of three things must be removed from it: heat, fuel, or oxygen. Knowing this, firefighters don't

always use water to put out a fire.

Materials

• Empty soda bottle

• 5 tablespoons of vinegar

• 1/2 tablespoon of baking soda

• Tea light candle

Page 15: ScienceShare.co.uk Shared Resource

Procedure

• Light the candle.

• Pour the vinegar into the bottle and add the baking soda. (You may want to use a funnel.) The mixture should fizz.

• Hold the bottle sideways over the lighted candle, making sure no liquid escapes. What happens to the flame?

Page 16: ScienceShare.co.uk Shared Resource

Why does this happen?

Page 17: ScienceShare.co.uk Shared Resource

Explanation

• The baking soda and vinegar react to make carbon dioxide, a gas that is heavier than oxygen. As it "pours" out of the bottle, it pushes the lighter oxygen away from the candle. The fire, now deprived of oxygen, can no longer burn.

Task

To design a leaflet to explain about fire safety and fire extinguishers

Create a fire escape floor plan:

• Start by drawing a rectangle on a piece of paper. Draw one for each room of your home.

• Then draw in all doors and windows. • In one colour, draw a line that shows the

fastest way out of each room. Then, in another

• Colour, draw another line that shows the second fastest way out.
