TEACHING AND LEARNING AT RHPS

As always, a great deal of excitement is buzzing around our school as the Preps prepare for

an excursion to Werribee Zoo, students prepare for Roxy’s Got Talent, Camp preparation is

taking place and I could go on!

I have read writing pieces written by the Prep students centred round their Inquiry studies.

The students were learning how to write factual reports and were using and explaining

terms such as “savannah, camouflage, habitat etc.”

Our focus on developing language for

learning through a focus on building oral

language has been transferred by the

students, into their writing. Credit to all

involved. Grade 2 students have been

learning to write “Free verse” poetry and I

have had the pleasure of having some

students read their poems to me and

explain their learning. Such a credit to all in

this grade area too. Here is Kaan’s free

verse poem he wrote and is very proud to share his poetry with the community.

DATES TO REMEMBER

100 DAYS

Today the Prep students celebrated being at school for

over 100 days of learning. They have been

involved in many learning opportunities in math

literacy etc. to help them develop their

understanding of the concept “What 100 means as a

number.”

ROXY’S GOT TALENT

Last year we saw the first “ROXY’S GOT TALENT” and what a wonderful show this was! Today was

the second “ROXY’S GOT TALENT” and the talent was equally impressive. Congratulations to all who

participated and to the following who received awards, 1st Zyron, 2nd Lara, Alyssa, Din and Yousef

K, 3rd Taj, 4th Biannca, Saba, Julie and Hannah and a special mention to Sasha.

INJURIES AT SCHOOL

Schools are very busy places and at times accidents happen. When a student has received a

knock to their head, we notify parents. Our sick bay is overseen by our First Aid trained office

staff and overseen by Sandra Miles. Sandra is a capable staff member who ensures students

who attend the sick bay are well cared for and that parents are informed when necessary.

RESILIENCE

Yesterday, I was very impressed by a student’s resilience regarding an issue impacting upon her. This student displayed such

resilience and the mature ability of putting all into perspective. We discussed what it meant to be resilient and the student

was able to provide a very robust definition of what it meant to be resilient and why it is so important to be resilient.

We also discussed the need to choose words appropriately as these impact on how we perceive an event. I attended an

event a few weeks ago where a renowned psychologist produced research regarding resilience and how important it is to be

future focused in order to improve our wellbeing. When issues arise at school, we discuss this with the student or students

and ensure we remain future focused with them in order for them to learn strategies, minimise catastrophizing and

understand that they will be able to move forward in a positive way.

Yours in learning

Speech Pathology News

Cued Articulation – Prep Classrooms

What is cued articulation?

Let’s break it down:

Cues refers to hand gestures, like you see in sign language. Articulation refers to how we produce sounds, like putting your tongue between your teeth to say ‘th’.

Cued Articulation is a system of hand cues that represent each sound in the Australian Language. Jane Passy, an Australian Speech Pathologist created this system of hand cues to act a visual representation of how we produce each sound.

Cued articulation at Roxburgh Homestead

At Roxburgh Homestead Primary School, the school Speech Pathologist, Adrianna works alongside the Foundation and Grade 1 teachers in the classroom to introduce these cues to help students when they are learning new sounds and letters for reading and spelling. Adrianna worked in the Grade 1 classes during Term 1 and Term 2 and is now working in the Foundation classes for Term 3 and 4.

Why use cued articulation?

Motivation: the signs are a great motivator for children; it is new and interesting and they enjoy using it.

Understanding: the cues relate to the way a sound is made e.g.. a short sound is represented by a short hand movement.

By using a visual cue to represent sounds, this helps students learn these sounds by enhancing:

Memory: we are more likely to remember when auditory and visual information are provided together

Attention: the hand signs cue the child to watch the speaker

Who uses cued articulation?

Cued articulation is used by a range of people including:

Speech pathologists use it when working with children with speech difficulties or children who have difficulty identifying and hearing sounds.

Teachers can use it to teach students links between sounds and letters or to teach students the correct pronunciation of English sounds.

Parents can use it to help their children learn links between sounds and letters. You can use this video with your child and follow the actions.
