MESSAGE
I commend the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics for keeping the flames of science constantly alive here at UP Manila through this Annual Science Week activity. As a scientific institution that promotes quality health and well-being, UP Manila actively joins and even spearheads efforts and activities that enhance science consciousness among its constituents and the public. Apart from course offerings and research programs, the celebration of Science Week every year is one way of helping contribute to greater science awareness and recognition. A strong science component forms a central part of that research entrepreneurial university that my administration is envisioning for UP Manila. Towards this goal, CAS’ expertise in the physical and natural sciences can be fully tapped through collaborative research partnerships with other colleges at UP Manila and outside institutions. The theme for this year, “Practically Physics”, is admittedly, a fascinating and difficult branch of science. Yet, its role and importance in everyday life is not that known to many people. It is common for students pursuing non-science degrees to wonder about the relevance of Physics in our lives and be apathetic in appreciating its essence. This is a reminder to our curriculum planners and faculty members to explore more creative and innovative ways of teaching and learning the subject. Society’s dependence on technology represents the importance of Physics in daily life. Many aspects of modern society would not have been possible without the important scientific discoveries made in the past that were anchored on the concepts of physics. Discoveries such as magnetism, electricity, conductors and others made modern conveniences, such as television, computers, phones and other business and home technologies possible. Modern means of transportation, such as aircraft and telecommunications, have drawn people across the world closer together – all relying on concepts in physics. This commemoration is a fitting venue for the promotion of CAS’ new undergraduate degree offering, “BS Applied Physics.” I hope it succeeds in generating more interest and recognition of Physics among our students and the rest of the constituents. Once again, happy Science Week! MANUEL B. AGULTO, MD

MESSAGE
On behalf of the College of Arts and Sciences, let me congratulate the Department of Physical Sciences and Mathematics for celebrating its annual Science Week, with the theme, “Practically Physics.” Allow me also to congratulate the Department for finally offering this new degree program. While this program was not included in the list of UP courses in the UPCAT application form last year, one block of freshmen who themselves are not of low caliber constituted the initial physics block for the current school year. The requirements for students to be accepted in this new program are high grades in science and mathematics, aside from passing the UPCAT score for UP Manila. Physics is an exciting field to go into. After graduating, you can focus on condensed matter physics, superconductivity, lasers and its applications, optics and photonics, image and signal processing, plasma physics, liquid crystals, statistical physics, field theory, complex systems, and physics education – all of which are alien to me. The program today, just to give you an example, shows the possibility of multi-disciplinary and trans-disciplinarity in your program – a physics problem can be solved through approaches from the computing sciences. There are not very many schools teaching applied physics in the Philippines. UPD Chancellor Caesar Saloma, in his paper in 2003, “Physics in the Philippines Today,” reported that only 18 schools provide undergraduate training in physics and applied physics, and only three of them offer PhD degree programs. As of April 2003, no more than 70 Filipinos hold a PhD in physics. That means that only one physics PhD exist out of one million Filipinos. I hope that our program will contribute significantly to the number of physicists in the country who will address real and pressing issues affective our people. I know this will be realized because I am confident that our applied physics program – through our select faculty – will demonstrate excellence in teaching, research and public service. Physics is more than an abstract area of research; it is also a powerful lens through which to view the everyday world. Everyday phenomena, toys and puzzles offer many interesting challenges and some lead to deep, interesting problems, especially in nonlinear science and mathematics. And they remind us why we got into Physics in the first place. I hope that you will stay in your program and not shift to other courses, realizing now how special your program is, and you will join a very select population in the Philippines and around the world. And when you graduate, remember that you are Iskolars ng Bayan – a select few in service of the Filipino people. Lastly, I hope everyone will participate in the various events and activities lined up by the DPSM for this week. Thank you very much. REYNALDO H. IMPERIAL, PhD

MESSAGE
Greetings! The theme of this year’s science week celebration is “Practically Physics”. This is consistent with our goal of celebrating the achievements of physics and its contributions to mankind. It is also our goal to increase the appreciation of students in physics and to promote awareness among students on the application of physics, especially in medicine. The application of physics in medicine is very significant. It is applied to medical imaging and radiotherapy. Diagnostic radiology, which includes X-rays, fluoroscopy, mammography, angiography, ultrasound, non-ionizing radiation (lasers, ultraviolet) and methods for taking image of the human body such as positron emission tomography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are some technologies that have physics applications. Activities such as lectures, exhibits, quiz contests for high school and college students, hands-on experiments and variety shows are organized to make physics interesting to students and to emphasize its creativity and uses. To all faculty, staff and students, I congratulate you for your endeavors to make a successful science week celebration. Also, I am grateful to all the sponsors for their donations to make our science week celebration more meaningful. MARCELINA B. LIRAZAN, PhD

Overview:
With the rapid use of nanoparticles in food processing, filtration/purification and consumer products
(personal care and cosmetics, textiles and shoes, electronics, etc.) as well as the huge potentiall of their
use in nanomedicine, quantitative understanding of the effects of nanoparticle uptake and transport is
increasingly needed. For example, already in 2009, over 800 products, mostly produced in Asia and the
USA, were claimed to contain nanosilver, whose risk potential for health and environment is subject of a
heated debate [1]. . The talk will discuss the importance of computational methods for a multidisciplinary
approach to understand the complex phenomena related to bio-nanointeractions. These include recent
developments in "nanoinformatics" - an emerging discipline analogous to "bioinfomatics" - which strives to
create repositories, standards about nanoparticles and related information [2] and the beginnings of a
"Systems Nanomedicine" (extendin the new field of "Nanomedicine Informatics") using systems biology
approaches to these problems [3, [4]]. Both computational areas offer opportunities for Filipinos to
engage in collaborative, cutting edge research in this impactful field.

Speaker Info:
Ed Mendoza studied mathematics at Ateneo de Manila, Heidelberg University and
Bonn University. He completed his PhD under G. Harder and F. Hirzebruch with a
thesis on the “Cohomology of PGL2 over imaginary quadratic integers”. While an
Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Wuppertal University, his collaboration with
communications engineers led to a strong interest in computer networks and a move
to the IT industry in October 1980.
After spending 22 years in the software industry in various positions, his interest in
the dynamics of complex systems and systems biology led to a move back to academe in October 2002.
He has since co-authored over 25 ISI publications, is a Co-Editor of a recent book on “Systems Biology
and Psychiatric Research” (Wiley-Blackwell 2010) and a Section Editor of an upcoming “Encyclopedia of
Systems Biology” (Springer 2012).
He is an Adjunct Professor in Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of the Philippines in
Diliman, Los Baños and Manila. He is currently a Visiting Scientist at the Max Planck Institute of
Biochemistry in Munich and can be contacted at [email protected].
