This popular workshop will educate you in the workings of the Atomic Absorption Spectrometer. You will be able to take measurements of various samples containing trace amounts of metals and learn how to analyse an unknown sample.

In this workshop you will be able to see how a Gas Chromatogram works by doing a variety of experiments

– Analysis of the alcohol content of a wine sample

– Analysis of a sample of biodiesel and petrol

– Analysis of a perfume sample and compare it to an imitation version – Chanel “Chance”

Dr Nick Proschogo, Madsen BuildingMass Spectrometry is an extremely useful technique for the analysis of a great variety of organic compounds. Dr Proschogo will give you a very interesting demonstration of our research instruments.

This workshop is looking at the operation of one of the most important instruments used for forensic analysis. You will be able to see the analysis of a porphyrin and a vitamin sample – Supradyn. This instrument also has a mass spectrometer attached to it for the analysis of the eluted sample.

X-Ray Crystallography is used for determining the 3 dimensional structure and elemental composition of any material that can be grown to form a crystal. For example the structures of DNA and haemoglobin were both determined using this technique. It can be used for the development of new drugs such as anti-cancer.

Various forensic techniques are used for the analysis of samples – Ultra-violet visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy as well as various wet chemistry methods. This workshop looks at counterfeiting, poisoning and fingerprinting methods

In this workshop you will get to do a variety of hands on experiments that can be used to help with teaching the Optional Topic “Industrial Chemistry” These experiments would also be very useful for teaching to other grades.Experiments being covered:

• Solvay Process• Various experiments demonstrating equilibrium• Experiments involving sulfuric acid• The production of sodium hydroxide • Electrolysis of sodium chloride solution• Copper with nitric acid is used to show an equilibrium reaction

This amazing instrumental method is widely used in both the scientific community and its applications (MRI) in the health industry. NMR is used for the analysis of organic structures.
