Description3
Teams must construct a device on-site to solve an engineering challenge using only the materials and tools that must fit in a “junk box” with a lid.
The “junk box” must be prepared before the competition.

Eye protection #2 must be properly worn during the construction and competition.
All materials and tools must be brought in a “junk box” with a lid, with outside dimensions not to exceed a total of 95 cm (length + width + height).(see next slide for drawing)
With all materials and tools in the box, the lid must fit all the way and close completely.

Competition
The device must be built on-site by the participants using only the materials brought in their junk box.
The Event Supervisor must determine which challenge will be used at a tournament. Team members are given the challenge type when
they enter the competition area to construct.At all levels, Regional, State, or National, all
teams must complete the same Category Challenge.

Competition13
Unless otherwise stated in the instructions, the devices must be freestanding and must not be attached to a tabletop, floor, ceiling, or any other support.
Teams will be given specific challenge instructions just prior to their competition time.
Teams must not leave the area without permission from event leader. Teams must not communicate in any way with coaches
or spectators during construction and testing.

Competition14
The ball(s) may be used during construction for practice and team members must place the balls in the device during the official testing.
Teams will have a maximum of 30 minutes to construct the specified device.
Teams must not modify their device in any way after the construction period has ended unless allowed by specific challenge rules.
Teams that complete construction early may be judged early.

Category A – General Rules
Prior to the beginning of construction, the Event Supervisor must declare which type ball the structure must hold.
A free standing cup on the structure must be used to hold the ball.
Students must provide the cup and the designated ball.

Build a freestanding bridge with the longest span that supports the cup and ball in the center for at least 5 seconds.
Rankings will be determined by the longest open span between the bases of the bridge measured in mm.
Ties being broken by height, in mm, to the bottom of the load.

Category A.2 - Tower
Build a freestanding tower that holds a cup and ball as high as possible for at least 5 seconds.
Rankings will be determined by the greatest height to the bottom of the load, measured in mm.
Ties will be broken by the narrowest base. Measured to the outside edge of the supports at the
widest span.

Category A - Cantilever
Build a cantilever that is laid out from the end of a table so that the span of the device projects horizontally from the table top, supporting a cup and a ball for at least 5 seconds.
Only the materials in the junk box may be used as a counterweight to hold down the cantilever.
The box and the tools must not be used as part of the counterweight.

Ties will be broken by the shortest length from the table edge to the rear of the counterbalance side (non-suspended) of the cantilever.

Category B – General Rules
Team members must choose which type of ball from their materials to use to earn points.
Junk box may be used for the collection container only for B.1 – Ramp
Target plate for B.2 – Catapult or B.3 – Bouncer must come from the team’s Junk box
Team members may use one hand to hold the base of the catapult or bouncer device to the table or floor.
Once a ball is released by the team, it must not be used again.

The target and device must not be moved once the team has placed them in the chosen positions. If the target or device moves, it must be put back to
the original position.At least one ball must reach the target
distance. It does not have to stay in container for B.1 or touch

Bonus points for all Category B Challenges – Measured distance times number of balls successfully
completing the task plus one (N+1) x distance

Rankings will be determined by the distance in mm between the closest starting point to the closest edge of the destination container.
The ramp must not touch or be connected to the collection container.

Example offenses that may result in a tier 2 placement include, but are not limited to: Having a pre-constructed assembly of any kind Using any materials or tools that violate the event
parameters Failure to bring a required material The device is not free standing (unless allowed in a
specific challenge – catapult & bouncer) The device fails to meet the minimum requirements
for the challenge Failure to follow specified challenge instructions

Ties will be broken by the scoring criteria for the specific challenge.
Any team that impounds a box but fails to attempt to build will be considered a “No Show”.

Scoring
Teams will be ranked in tiers based on adherence to the challenge instructions.
Within each tier, teams must be ranked based on the scoring criteria for the specific engineering challenge.
All teams placed in the 1st tier will be ranked higher than all teams placed in the 2nd tier and so on.
