Warm Up…Write each statement then complete the statement (6.P.3.1)…
Write in notebook….Heat Transfer
• Thermal energy will always move between objects from _____ to ______
• Thermal energy moves until both systems or objects reach the same temperature (equilibrium temperature)
• Think equal = the same!
Write in notebook….Heat Transfer
Hot water temperature = 90⁰ C (red container)Cold water temperature = 20 ⁰ C (blue container)
What would the equilibrium temperature be if we mixed them together?
Share with the Class?
• Volunteers? The hot water would rise up and mix with the cold water forming convection currents.
The two liquids would continue to mix until they reached an equilibrium temperature of 55⁰ C (equal temp)
Calculation: 90 ⁰ C + 20 ⁰ C / 2 = 55 ⁰ C
Today’s Agenda…• 1. Hand warmer lab – small groups• 2. Worksheet Activity – independent work• 3. Flashcard activity – independent work (focus on
vocabulary)You will work at your own pace today after we complete the lab investigation….Each activity is a review before our upcoming testAs you complete each activity, you will raise your hand and then you will be allowed to start the next activity
Today’s agenda…
• Anyone not using their time wisely will be given the test today!
• This includes talking, distracting other students, up wondering around the classroom without permission and not raising your hand when you finish an activity or you have a question…..
• We will read page EN 87 “Explore” together in our textbook
• Find your Thermal Energy graphic organizer (from last class)
• This is where you will be recording your information
Lab…Hand Warmer
• You will work in groups• We will count off from 1 – 5 • The number you count will
the number you work in • Let’s count now!• Move now!
Lab…Hand Warmer
• In your group you will follow the procedure and record your results on your handout
• Everyone must record the information
• Does anyone not understand?• 15 minutes…..GO
Lab…Hand Warmer
• In your groups, answer the following questions in your notebook
• 1. What is inside the hand warmer?• 2. Is the hand warmer reusable? How?.• 15 minutes….GO
How did it do that…
• Let’s review….• Question 1:• Question 2:
How did it do that…
How did it do that????
• So what is Sodium acetate? • It is a liquid at room temperature • It is known as hot ice; commonly found in
heating pads and hand warmers.• Is the sodium acetate a liquid or
a solid in this picture?
Our hand warmers….
• Sodium acetate (liquid form) is placed inside pouches containing a metal disc.
• When you click the metal disc inside the pouch, a few metal particles are released. This causes the sodium acetate to react!
• The sodium acetate quickly change to a solid. This is known as supercooling.
Let’s check our understanding…
• When a liquid changes to a solid does it gain energy or lose energy?
• It Loses energy….the energy is lost to the
environment and we feel this as HEAT on our hands!!!
How did it do that????
• Sodium acetate freezes at 54°C• What temperature is that in °F?• http://www.metric-conversions.org/temperat
ure/celsius-to-fahrenheit-table.htm• Since sodium acetate freezes at 54°C, the solid
ice returns to that temperature giving off heat.
Did you know that…
• Sodium acetate heat pads can be used over and over again, simply boiling them will return the solid sodium acetate back to a liquid. This means it is ready to be used again.
• Pretty cool….• http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrCzAGPw

Next…
• Worksheet activity – insulators and conductors (front and back – complete, then raise your hand)
• Flashcard activity
Flashcards…
• You will receive a pack of flashcards now• You will record 1 vocabulary word on each
card now• See teacher example
1. Flashcards…
• You will receive a pack of index cards • You will record various vocabulary words and
the matching definition on your index cards• This activity will help you review for your
upcoming test on Friday, Nov 7th (A day) or Monday, Nov. 10th (B day)
• Does anyone have any questions?
Flashcards….
• You will use your notebook, the Energy textbook or the 6th grade science textbook the help you define each vocabulary word
• Everything should be in your notebook!• If you need a 6th grade textbook, raise your
hand
• You will explore different stations…• 1. Candle and metal rod (demo) • 2. Red and Blue make purple (demo)• 3. Hot iron (demo)• 4. Hand warmer Lab (hands on)
Today’s Labs…
It’s Demo Time
• If you put a metal rod against a hot plate, could you melt wax (a birthday candle) by touching it against the metal rod? Why or why not?
• Make a prediction in your notebook…. It would start with either yes or no and explain why
• Yes, you could melt wax because…• No, you could not melt wax because…
It’s Demo Time
• Conduction, Wax and a Metal Rod
• YES, it would melt because of conduction!
It’s Demo Time
• : You mix a hot (red) liquid with a cold (blue) liquid, will the liquids mix and change color? Why or why not?
• Make a prediction in your notebook…. It would start with either yes or no and explain why
• Yes, the liquids will change color because…• No, the liquids will not change color because…
It’s Demo Time
• Red and blue make purple..
• Yes, the liquid will become purple because of convection!
It’s Demo Time
• You turn on an iron. Would you be able to determine if the iron is hot by placing your hand 6 inches away? Why or why not?
• Make a prediction in your notebook…. It would start with either yes or no and explain why
• Yes, you can tell the iron is hot because….• No, you cannot tell the iron is hot because…
It’s Demo Time
• Hot iron
• YES, you will feel the thermal heat because of radiation!
Video on Discovery Ed
• Review “Heat Transmission: Conduction, Convection, and Radiation”
